7/31 – Yankees at Rays

Now that all of the trade deadline dust has settled with Lance Berkman, Austin Kearns and Kerry Wood, we can get down to the business of baseball.
Hey, since we’ve all got our stories completely written about the roster moves, Alex Rodriguez can’t help but hit No. 600 tonight, right?
Here are the lineups as the Yankees and Rays meet, separated by just one game in the American League East:

YANKEES (65-37)
Derek Jeter SS, Lance Berkman DH, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Nick Swisher RF, Curtis Granderson CF, Francisco Cervelli C, Brett Gardner LF
RHP Javier Vazquez (9-7, 4.54)

RAYS (64-38)
John Jaso DH, Carl Crawford LF, Evan Longoria 3B, Carlos Pena 1B, Matt Joyce RF, Sean Rodriguez 2B, B.J. Upton CF, Kelly Shoppach C, Jason Bartlett SS
RHP Matt Garza (11-5, 4.06)

The Yankees Win, Theeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Yankees Win! Thank you Mr. Cano. HUGE HUGE win and once again we see the difference between the rest and the Yankees, it’s Mariano Rivera, again. I like the additions to this club, two veteran hitters and a veteran middle reliever. Woods is NOT the pitcher he was with the Cubs but if he can stay healthy and get people out it will be a welcome addition.

Good swing by Tex to tie the game. Hopefully that will give the Yankees some momentum. Maybe they’re starting to figure Garza out, other than A Rod.

What’s with A Rod? Man he looks bad at the plate trying to get #600. He’s swinging at bad pitches and is swinging under the ball and fouling them off. Not good at bats in this series. He needs to get that #600 out of the way so he can start producing like he was doing before he got #599. Way too much hype about the home run milestone and not enough focus on just getting a hold of the ball for a solid single or double and drive in some runs.

Is the Yankees offence that weak in this series or is the Rays’ starting pitching that good? The Yankees can’t hit the Rays’ starting pitching so far and the starting rotation is pitching lights out against the Yankees. I don’t have a lot of confidence that the Yankees are going to win any games in this series and we’re going to come out at the end 1 game behind. If we do, the Rays will gain a lot of confidence and momentum that could help them continue to widen the lead going forward. This is a crucial series for the Yankees. it could end up being the turning point for the season for both the Rays and the Yankees, positively for the Rays and negatively for the yankees. Anybody share my nervousness? Good pick ups by the Yankees today that will strengthen the bench and our offence and relief pitching. The problem is that other teams close to us or that we’ll meet in the world series also got better.
