7/24 – Yankees vs. Royals

Some assorted notes from Yankee Stadium for this afternoon’s 1:05 p.m. ET game against the Kansas City Royals:
MAN ON A MISSION: 3B Alex Rodriguez hit his 599th career HR in Thursday’s win vs. Kansas City, and with his next home run will become the seventh player all time to reach the 600-homer plateau…will become the second player to reach the mark as a Yankee, joining Babe Ruth.
? Hit his first career HR (off Tom Gordon, 6/12/95), his 499th HR (off Gil Meche, 7/25/07) and 500th HR (off Kyle Davies, 8/4/07) against the Royals…is 3-for-4 with 1 HR – No. 500 – in his career against today’s starter RHP Kyle Davies…according to SABR’s David Vincent, no pitcher has given up multiple milestones of either a 500th, 600th or 700th  homer…only two teams have allowed both a 500th and 600th HR – San Diego (Eddie Murray’s 500th and Willie Mays’ 600th) and Pittsburgh (Mike Schmidt’s 500th and Barry Bonds’ 600th).
UNDER THE SUN: The Yankees are 24-12 (.667) in day games this season, tying Chicago-AL for the second-best winning percentage in day contests this season…only Detroit (25) has more daytime wins in 2010…the Royals (.298) and the Yankees (.290) have the two highest batting averages in day games this season…the Yankees have hit 50HR (third most in the Majors) in 36 day contests.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: 2B Robinson Cano (67R, 66RBI) and 1B Mark Teixeira (71R, 66RBI) are one of two sets teammates in the Majors this season to each record at least 60R and 60RBI (also Texas’ Josh Hamilton and Vladimir Guerrero)…along with 3B Alex Rodriguez (50R, 78RBI) and RF Nick Swisher (61R, 56RBI), the Yankees are the only team to boast four players each with at least 50R and 50RBI in 2010.
YANKEES (61-34)
Derek Jeter DH, Curtis Granderson CF, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Jorge Posada C, Marcus Thames RF, Colin Curtis LF, Ramiro Pena SS

Hey everyone. I heard from BPark again last night. He is alive and well and sends his greetings along with the following:

?Re: No thanks on Haren?
?Forward to Seeknay and One5 and Aussie B and the other regular who’s name slips my mind (not matt). Fausto Carmona is a go, Dan Haren is a no. He is 7 and 8 on a good team. Carmona is cheap and dominated the rays. Promote Carmona on the board.?

PS: I agree with Carmona over Haren. Haren has logged too much time on the DL.

You could be right SN51!

Like

Better idea would be to start Moseley in Cleveland then bring anyone else in to hold the lead. Moseley earned a start today.

The Royals played great defense, including the last “phantom” out!

If Mitre goes again Thursday in Cleveland, it looks like a quick switch to Moseley could be a good bet!

Never say “never” again!

Betemit played under the legendary Torre! With Swish too keep him loose, chances are he’d do better.

Like

Point is robertg the Yankees have been down that road with Betemit and he did very little, LIKE Kyle. BTW Kudos to Dustin Moseley today, 3.2 innings of one hit relief. Yankees need to rally this inning in order to get Moseley the W.

I want the lead!

Damn, I’m having trouble staying connected!

There’s no guarantee Wigginton can perform in NY. And I’d like a switch-hitter!

Like

Note I didn’t say the same about Kyle?

Like

I would prefer Wigginton over Betemit. It’s like taking Myers from the Astros over Farnsworth.

Like

The new slimmer Betemit? Better fit than Wigginton!

Like

And Jeter hits. Let’s go Grandy!

Like

As for Betemit it’s one thing to do it for KC where expectations are not high, and another thing to perform at the level set by Yankke fans. I doubt you will see him back in pinstripes anytime soon.

Like

Let’s go Jete!

Like

Not sure the internal options are quite that good for starters. Oneof5 trading Joba to Arizona for Haren would not make me shred any tears. Just think the guy is a marginal pitcher and has met his waterloo now. Maybe after his first year the expectations were way too high.

Like

Look at the numbers for Farnsworth! Unbelievable!

Like

Tex is doing all the damage today. He’s getting into a power groove at the right time down the stretch.

Like

After being villified here a few years ago by name-calling bleeps, it looks like Wilson Betemit has come back with a vengence. Could he get a second tour? Stay tuned!

Like

As far as help, it’ll be interesting to see what’s available when the prices come down just before next weekend. There are some internal options and I prefer to stay “in house.”

Like

Jeter really has dropped off offensively from the beginning of the year especially in clutch situations. He grounds into a lot of double plays.

Like

Mitre should have been eased back in relief, not try to fill Andy’s shoes as a starter. He is very rusty obviously. Now the lead is probably insurmountable seeing the lineup the Yankees have today. It looks like their B team with key guys out. Poor pitching and no offence results in a loss usually. Ty Wigginton would be a good pick up and it looks like the Yankees are going after Haran and will probably have to give up Joba for him. That won’t make seeknay cry for sure, nor me. How long is Aceves out? The rest of the year? Man that was disappointing when he was pitching so well.

Like

I would love to see Nova.

Like

Anyone want to bet that Chad Gaudin starts the next time Andy’s spot comes up? Either that or Ivan Nova? Or the Yankees put off a trade (Brett Myers would be nice). Mitre is NOT the short term solution here.

Like

This team has one week until the trade deadline to make some decisions. This is when Cashman earns his paycheck. I am concerned about the loss of Andy for a month, not sure Mitre can fill the bill. Secondly, middle relief and the bridge to Mo. Last, another Jerry Hairston stick, perhaps Ty Wigginton.

Let’s go YANKEES!
