7/20 – Yankees vs. Angels

Hello once again from Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees will open a very brief two-game series to wrap up their season set with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Good to be back in the saddle, and my thanks to Tim Britton & crew for holding down the fort while I was out of town over the weekend.

The Yankees have recalled Jonathan Albaladejo to replace Andy Pettitte on the active roster, and Albaladejo will be available in relief tonight. Sergio Mitre is the scheduled starter for Thursday vs. Kansas City, so another move will be needed then.
One other pre-game note – Alex Rodriguez was effusive in his praise of Lou Piniella, who announced today that he plans to retire from managing after the season. “I can’t say enough good things about him,” A-Rod said. “For me, I needed to have a disciplinarian like him, coming out of high school into the big leagues. It was exactly what I needed. I have a lot to be grateful and appreciative of, from what he taught me.”
Here are tonight’s lineups:
ANGELS (50-45)
Erick Aybar SS, Howie Kendrick 2B, Bobby Abreu RF, Torii Hunter CF, Hideki Matsui DH, Mike Napoli 1B, Juan Rivera LF, Maicer Izturis 3B, Jeff Mathis C, Sean O’Sullivan RHP (0-0, 1.29)
YANKEES (58-33)
Derek Jeter SS, Nick Swisher RF, Mark Teixeira 1B, Alex Rodriguez 3B, Robinson Cano 2B, Jorge Posada C, Curtis Granderson CF, Juan Miranda DH, Brett Gardner LF, Phil Hughes RHP (11-2, 3.65)

Let’s go YANKEES!

Their problems are more than a layoff oneof5. They NEED better pre-Mariano relievers and depending on Mitre’s start perhaps another starter. Park has been DREADFUL (Michael Kay’s word) this year and needs to go by the way of Hawkins of a few years ago. One of these days Mgmt is going to figure out not to sign NL pitchers!!!

The Rays are playing a woefully weak team in the Orioles and beating them 8-6. There’s no way the Yankees are going to close the gap in this game. Hughes has a good record this year but his last few games have not been strong. I think the layoff has really hurt the yankees. And the Halos are a team the Yankees traditionally haven’t played well against. No offence tonight and poor pitching equals a big loss. After tonight the yankees could be only 1 1/2 games ahead of the Rays. It all adds up to a pitiful performance tonight. Hopefully they can get back on track tomorrow and Vasquez can pitch a good game.

Got to tell you when I grow up I want to be Nick Johnson, get a paycheck for sitting in the dugout and doing nothing.

Disappointing performance by Hughes tonite. Six runs in 5 plus innings is NOT what the Yankees needed. However, they are making this kid the Angels are throwing look like Nolan Ryan.
