Will Yanks swing a pitching deal this time?

In about an eight-hour span last week in Seattle, it looked like the Yankees were going to trade for Cliff Lee … reports indicated the Yankees had an agreement in place for Cliff Lee … and Cliff Lee walked to a podium in Safeco Field, talking about how he actually thought he was going to the Yankees before rushing off to catch the next flight to join the Texas Rangers.

Many in baseball still think Lee is destined to wear pinstripes after this season, but for now, he’s out of the equation. And when Andy Pettitte walked off the mound yesterday, headed for what general manager Brian Cashman said will likely be a four-to-five week stay on the disabled list, you could see just why the need to wrap up another starting pitcher would be more than an embarrassment of riches.
For the moment, Sergio Mitre will have to begin stretching himself out a little ahead of schedule and get ready to fill the role of a spot starter every fifth day, while Chad Gaudin and Dustin Moseley could also be tapped for innings.
But with less than two weeks remaining before the non-waivers trade deadline, you’d have to expect the Yankees to see what’s out there in the market. There was talk after the Lee deal fell through that he was just a special case and the Yankees weren’t going to chase more pitching, but that may have all just changed.

Why aren’t the Yanks making a stronger pitch, pardon the pun, at obtaining Roy Oswalt for their rotation? The Guy’s a proven front line pitcher, and if he’s demanded to be traded to a contender, that sounds like a match made in heaven for the yanks. There’s no telling what a guy like that could do given the run support and defense he’d get with the pinstripers. C’mon Cashman, don’t let another quality arm go to someone else. At least make an offer for the guy!!!
