7/4 – Yankees vs. Blue Jays
Happy Independence Day from Yankee Stadium, where the Yankees will send Phil Hughes to the mound this afternoon to complete their six-game homestand, looking to win the rubber game of their series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
It’s also All-Star selection Sunday, and Joe Girardi plans to tell his deserving players of that in just a few minutes, planning to bring a few of his guys out to Angel Stadium on July 13.
And now we know, as TBS has informed us, that Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano will be in the starting lineup for the American League. Alex Rodriguez has been named by Girardi as a reserve, and the Yankees pitching staff will be well represented by CC Sabathia (named by Girardi), plus Phil Hughes and Mariano Rivera, who both went in on the player vote.
Sabathia is scheduled to pitch on Sunday in Seattle, which would make him ineligible to play in the All-Star Game. That could open the door for him to be replaced on the roster by Andy Pettitte.
Here’s what Girardi told TBS from the dugout: “I think the toughest part is you know you are going to leave somebody off that is extremely deserving of going, and they are going to be disappointed. … It’s kind of like the NCAA tournament pool, you can have 64 teams, increase it 128 and there still are going to be two teams that felt they are deserving of going. There are players who are deserving of going who are not, and that is tough.”

Nice to see Cano get the All Star start, he certainly deserves it considering he is having an MVP type year. A delegation of 6 Yankees is a good solid number, but the fact is injuries and poor performance are the only reason the Yanks don’t have a number closer to 10. So there is still room for improvement, and hopefully the Bombers find it because Boston are suddenly only a half game back.
Let’s go YANKEES!
Philthy stuff!
Morrow too!
Hughes really does have great stuff today.
Atta boy Tex!
Way to hang in there A-Rod!
Funny run!
Bring him in Jete!
Hate when that happens!
Arghh!
Double arghh!!!
Note to Rob Thomsen: Swisher & Tex are SLOW!!!
Based on statistics this year, Hughes should only pitch through the lineup of an opposing team, especially a good hitting one, twice and then should get pulled. His ERA the first two times through is just over 2 while it jumps to 3.09 the third time through. Hughes does poorly when he gets near 75 pitches. Now a good hit gone to waste. Now two hitters thrown out. The Jays aren’t going to go away quietly today. if Hughes doesn’t get it done the next inning he needs to be taken out for a reliever. But who? That’s the question. Mosely is likely not available after pitching yesterday. The Yankees had a chance to get a run this inning and didn’t get it done.
Only thing worse is two out at home on the same play!
Thomsen needs to know that Speed was not on the basepaths in that inning. One guy thrown out at home is bad but the 2nd one is VERY bad.
Based on his last three starts, Hughes should not be an All Star. He is missing his spots AGAIN.
Everyone notice that since that nine day holiday given by Girardi Hughes has NOT been the same pitcher. GREAT move by Girarid. STOP BABYING THESE YOUNG PITCHERS!!!
How long is Girardi going to leave Hughes in? It’s obvious that the jays are getting to him. Better get him out before the game gets away on us and it will be too much of a hole to dig out of.
IF they lose today they go 2-4 in the last two series at home, not VERY good.
Get ‘em back!
Gardner what speed!
Spark plug!!!
Frackin computer!
How bad is Jorge’s injury?
Looked like a twisted wrist.
Yankees need to trade for an outfielder and reliever. They can’t go with Thames and rookie relievers, as good as someone like Moseley might be in the future. They need more bench strength and a stronger and more reliable bull pen. Looks like Gardner is starting to develop the power that Tex has been lacking this year. He sure is scarey on the bases. Hope Posada is only bruised and hasn’t got a broken finger. Didn’t look good.
Let’s go ‘Cisco!
Bad call!
FIRE ROB THOMSEN NOW, SWISHER HAS NO SPEED!! YOU IDIOT!!!
All good gambles to me!
What’s going on with three guys being thrown out at the plate today? Is Thomson sending them or are they running on their own? Who does Swisher think he is, Gardner? Man they needed an extra run or two with the bases loaded and only 1 out. Not good enough.
Three people thrown out at home today. What the *ELL is Thomsen thinking. Swish is SLOW, SLOW, SLOW!!! What is Thomsen the reincarnation of Boby Meachem????
Not really good gambles with the arm Bautista has and the lack of speed Swisher has.
They are good gambles robertg IF it’s Jeter, Gardner or Cano on base. NOT Swish, Tex, Jorge or AROD. It’s knowing who is on base and who the outfielders are. ONE its ok but three, please.
Please don’t tell me Joba is pitching with the yankees only ahead by a run and he gives up a single to the first batter. Is Girardi trying to blow this game? The opposing hitters are able to get around on Joba’s fast ball. There’s not enough action on his fast ball. it’s too straight and it’s too easy for good hitters to hit.
Joba CANNOT get people out one, two, three. GET MO. warming up NOW!!!!
The Yankees should have been up by two or three runs instead of 1. Why didn’t Girardi use Mo for two innings. They need to win this game to win the series and stay ahead of the Sox and Rays.
Perfect throws were required and the Jays made them.
POG Gardner easy!
Perfect throws, a great catcher and SLOW base runners. I REPEAT SWISH, TEX, AROD, & JORGE ARE SLOW. You do not take a chance with them running when the Jays outfielders are catching the ball in short center and in short right. One out at the plate is OK, but Three come on robertg.
We have the Sun on our side and GOD will come in for the ninth!
No, go away Seeknay!!!
Mo ‘em down!
The Os go to the bottom of the ninth at Boston up 6-0.
Snazzlefratz!
No Wells but Wise does the damage, go figure!
This game should have been over by now. Mo. is NOT perect as we have just seen. I still go back to three guys thrown out at home, MISSED opportunities.
Not a big Swish, but a start!
Final in Boston: Os 6 Red Sox 1.
Tex just fast enough!
No you go away robertg. This team deserves a lot of criticism this year from the GM to the manager to the relief corps. What the *ell are you George Costanza and work for the Yankees?
Luck against Lind……y?
Well, to be honest I do resemble Costanza a bit!
But, I have won three championships, and I would have sent all three!
yeah and I’m sure you think Robertson, Joba, Gaudin and company are great relievers.
No, only two of those three will be!
You ever thought of becoming a Cub fan robertg? You fit their fan profile
You keep thinking that guy because I don’t see much improvement or evidence of that happening anytime soon.
Perpetual losers…………no way I fit!
Isn’t your sight part of the question?
Let’s go Marcus!
Marcus is the new Melky!!!
Seeknay,
Don’t read too much in “go away.” It’s just the opposite of your “come on.”
I know we won today but we are not playing smart baseball.
EX: ARod s bad postioning last week, Andys bad throws, and I hope Joe fines the third base coach for costing us a big inning
today. No outs and the big bangers on deck and he sends Swisher home for an easy out. Should have been second and third with no outs. Not smart baseball and that will catchup with you eventually.
crushed????
Who the hell cares what he is.
Vector,
You just met THE IMPOSTER!
Bye Bye Moron!!!!!
Real time post out of order:
Vector,
You just met THE IMPOSTER!
And the “no out” argument for not sending Swisher is a good one. Had we been consistently scoring runs, I might think that also!

I think this team is special. It doesn’t take a genius to know it, but they have trouble scoring for a few games and what happens? Marcus Thames delievers. I am a die hard Braves fan, but this Yankee team has really caught my eye. I have suffered watching Melky so I guess I should check in on my favorite pitcher of the 09 season: Javy Vazquez. Yikes! He will turn it around. He may have wanted to over produce which the whole NY media crap could have gotten too him. Who knows? Anyone think he’s leaving NY in free agency following this year?
The Braves are a class organization. Looks like their fans are too!
