6/27 – Yankees at Dodgers

Hello from Dodger Stadium as we bid farewell to Interleague play tonight with the final game of this three-game series against the Dodgers. This wraps up a six-game, seven-day road trip for the Bombers, who took two out of three from the D-backs in Arizona and are looking to do the same here in Los Angeles.

A win today would put the Yankees back at their season-high water mark of 19 games over .500. They have the best record in the Majors, leading the American League East by two games entering play Sunday.

Turned off the game when it was 6-2 in the 8th inning with Joba pitching and figures it was a done deal. The Yankees would lose the game and the series. Woke up this morning and found out they won in the 10th inning. Cano and some of the players had not hit much all night but they came through at the end so congratulations for a great comeback. it sounds more like the Yankees of old. Hope it’s a good sign of things to come. That and more will do! Way to go guys! Go Yankees!

I said this before, and I have beens saying it all year: The yankees cannot play with the good teams. In the last 6 weeks, they have lost series to the Mets, Red Sox, Tampa, Detroit, Toronto, Dodgers, and Phillies. If you can’t beat the good teams, they’re going to catch you.

Another thing: the Yankees lack the killer instinct they had last year. I cannot remember a ninth-inning comeback and win. We had so many last year, with Damon, Mutsui and Melky. We just don’t seem to have that spirit this year.

And then there’s the bullpen and the AJ Burnet syndrom. And what the heck is Joba doing? And what about their defense that seems to be asleep recently?

Yeah, I know they’re in first place. And I know they have the best record in the majors. but they don’t play like it. It just doesn’t feel right.

Seeknay: Maybe Torre knew that Andy panics a bit when he has to field a ball and throw it in a hurry, and he knows that the AL teams without a DH are not used to pitchers bunting. He saw what Andy did with the ball on the first bunt and I guess you keep going with the same tactic hoping it continues to work, and it did. Anyway, it will be good to get back to AL teams. The Yankees didn’t too badly considering with NL teams. The Rays certainly didn’t play the NL teams well either. I’m in no hurry to see more interleague play. Yes the Yankees do need to make a trade for a good arm in the bull pen and a good solid outfielder who can field and hit. Too bad we couldn’t have got this guy Josh Hamilton with the Rangers, or even a Mike Cameron. It’s not easy to make a trade it seems mid year but young guys like Curtis and Huffman aren’t the answer. They’re not ready yet.

The Yankees could have been swept in this series with the Dodgers. Not a strong series pitching wise other than CC. Weak offence and not strong defensively. It looks like the Red Sox are now only 1 game behind and they’ve been hot of late. Now they’ve got a couple of serious injuries to key players it will be interesting to see how it affects their win and losses.

Can anyone tell me why they keep sending Robertson to the mound in relief? The kid is hopless and hittable. Except for ARod’s home run this hasn’t been one of the yankees best games by a long shot. If they pull this out it will be a miracle.

Anybody watching this game tonight. Certainly not going well so far defensively or offensively. A little embarrassing when the Dodgers have the record they have playing against the team with the best record in the majors. They’re not playing that way. And the Dodgers certainly aren’t intimidated. I’m sure Joe Torre must be elated. And the yankees aren’t up against the best pitchers in the majors either but they can’t hit them.

The yankees are getting small balled to death. Pettitte looked really uncomfortable with a couple of those throws to bases. He’s been pitching fairly well but the bunts and poor throws have killed them. Is this too big a hole to climb out of? The big hitters need to start putting the ball in play. They’re not getting it done offensively and the dodgers are making them look bad defensively. It’s not the Rays we need to worry about anymore. It’s our old nemesis the Red Sox.

This team needs a better bench. Cashman traded for Hairston before the trade deadline last year. He needs to get a veteran outfielder and infielder by the end of July.

When the *ELL did Joe Torre learn the art of small ball? One of my main criticisms I had of him the last three years with the Yankees was that the guy relied on the “big inning” and did not created many small ball runs. That was evident in many of the playoff losses endured by Torre’s teams in the playoffs. Now suddenly he knows small ball.
