Greetings from Chase Field

chase.jpgHello from Phoenix, Arizona, where Lady Gaga is thankfully not present and all of the New Yorkers seem to be talking about how hot it is. Yes, it gets hot in the desert in June. You kind of had to see that coming, no?

Anyway, true story, my car dashboard claimed the outside temperature got as high as 115 while driving to Chase Field this afternoon. This is my first-ever trip to Arizona, so I’m looking forward to having some experiences to report back on. Here’s how it looks during early field-prep at the site of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series.
Speaking of that game, guess who was on my 7 a.m. ET flight from Newark Liberty International Airport? None other than Mariano Rivera, taking advantage of a night at home in New York with his family instead of catching the Bombers’ charter flight after Sunday’s game. That brings us to this stat of the day from the Yankees’ media relations department:
  • RHP Mariano Rivera has retired his last 21 hitters faced, marking a career best according to the Elias Sports Bureau…began the streak on 6/3 vs. Baltimore after starting the ninth inning by issuing a walk to Nick Markakis and hitting Ty Wigginton with a pitch…Elias also notes that Rivera has held opponents hitless in their last 22AB (last hit allowed was on 6/1 vs. Baltimore to Luke Scott)…has held RH batters hitless in their last 20AB (last RH hit allowed was on 5/21 at Citi Field to Jason Bay). … Has not allowed a run over his last 11 appearances (since 5/25), holding opponents to just 1H and 2BB in 11.0IP while converting each of his eight save opportunities (1HP, 10K).
Also, Yankees fans, you’ll want to tune into MLB Network at 7:30 p.m. ET tonight to catch their interview with Mark Teixeira.
