6/21 – Yankees at D-backs

We’re underway at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, as the Yankees make their first visit here since June 15-17, 2004. Just to prove the D-backs haven’t forgotten about that little seven-game series back in November 2001, they had Mark Grace, Matt Williams and Luis Gonzalez throw out the ceremonial first pitches tonight. Remember them?
But that was then, so settle down, fans. The Yankees are in first place and the Diamondbacks … aren’t. Anyway, this is my first game here and Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger and I are debating what we think of the park.
I think it has some resemblance to Miller Park in Milwaukee, and the roof reminds me of Safeco Field in Seattle in some ways. Someone described this place as “playing baseball in an airplane hanger,” but I don’t think that’s necessarily true. I will say that one word to describe Chase Field is “industrial” though.
Hey, we’re going late-night here, but if you’d like to follow along during the game on Twitter, I’ll be @bryanhoch.

That’s all folks!

Hell in a hand basket rings true to me!

Like

Assuming tonight’s game ends with a loss Burnett’s record with the Yankees is 19-15 which is one victory more than he had with the Jays the year before the Yankees got him as a free agent. I think Sabathia was a great FA pickup. However for now Burnett is a marginal pickup who needs to stop thinking he’s a great pitcher and do some work. He might be better than Pavano but that is not saying much.

Like

IF Burnett was the second best FA available then major league pitching has gone to *ell in a hand basket. The guy is 2-6 in his last 8 decisions and if memory serves me right one or both of those wins were against Baltimore. Again I don’t see Jorge as being the problem here, it is Burnett’s mechanics, mentality and attitude. One thing is for sure he will not be joining Girardi at the All Star game this year.

Like

Get past the money. We’ve already gotten more than twice the production of Pavano for roughly twice the money! Burnett was clearly the second best FA in Winter 2008-2009. Better pitchers are not always available or affordable (tradeable talent with low picks.)

Like

No. I just don’t think Jorge is a take charge kind of guy. I think Cervelli is, maybe not as much as Molina, but more than Jorge. I would send Burnett to Florida and have Nardi Contreras, Billy Connors, or whoever is still around from George’s days to get intensive work. Then I would have Cervelli catch his next start. Something unconventional!!!

Like

And the Yankees are paying this guy $16.5 million dollars a year.

Like

So what you are telling me robertg is that this clown needs to be babied by his catcher? Line by Burnett tonite: 4 innings pitched, 7 earned runs, 3 home runs. Great game AJ. Wouldn’t say anything but this is like your fifth bad start in a row and of course Jorge is to blame.

Like

I think Molina handled Burnett better because he was constantly going to the mound!

Like

Hey, is that a little backhand compliment for Vazquez?

Like

I wonder if Eiland’s return will make a difference, whenever that will be?

Like

This has got nothing to do with who is catching AJ. This guy’s mechanics are totally screwed up. Every pitch is done with a different motion and release point. It’s up to him to get his act together and I’m not sure he thinks that. Instead of blaming Jorge or anyone else he needs to follow Vasquez’s cue. Get your *SS down in the pen between starts and WORK!!!

Like

Right now BustNut has a worse ERA than Lopez.

Like

Who’s on ESPN, Martin, Morgan, and Boone?

Like

I think it’s more of unfamiliar ballpark blahs.

Like

I think the Yankees have the Monday night blahs. Only three games being played. The Sox and the Rays aren’t playing so they see this as a game that doesn’t really matter. they’re just going through the motions.

Like

The Yankees will be content to let Nolan Ryan prove his theory in a few years. There will be more pitch and innings counts!

Like

Oneof5 I’m not sure this guy ever gets it straight. Cream pies aside this guy needs to grow the *ell up and pitch. If he has mechanic problems get your *SS down the pen and work on it. Observing him it looks that he expects disaster because he is throwing to Posada. Burnett is a headcase has been that way in Toronto & in Florida. He might have all the tools but his mental approach *UCKS!!

Like

Lopez a 2-6 pitching record with 4.36 ERA and the Yankees can’t hit him and make him look like another Cy Young candidate. And this team has one of the worst records in the major league.

Like

Skip Hughes in the rotation to save his arm? He’s just a kid. He should be able to pitch forever. Better to skip AJ I’d say for a couple of starts until he can work on his pitching and is ready to start again when he gets things straightened out. And if he doesn’t he goes to the pen. it’s that simple.

Like

Bob,
No way Girardi uses kidd gloves. And another losing streak is Halladay’s although the Phillie’s offense may be the primary blaim.

Like

Oneof5 let’s trade his *SS to the Phillies for Happ.

Like

Robert. AJ has always been tempermental and difficult to deal with. Every manager has to treat him with kid gloves. He did well one season up here because he was pitching with Halladay and some of Halladay’s success was rubbing off and maybe Halladay had some influence on him. It doesn’t seem he has that kind of mentor in New York and again he’s proving to be a loose cannon. When he gets behind he sulks and gets surly and he’s always going to forget the last bad game and do better next time. But he doesn’t do better. He’s obviously not learning. I don’t think he listens to his catcher or his coach. I personally think he is overrated and now he’s signed a big contract he’s going to be hard to trade and get rid of. The only solution would be to put him in the pen and use one of the younger guys to start in the rotation.

Like

Third inning wonder what Aj will do now?

Like

Of course ESPN has to show that d*mn game 7 of 2001. Maybe AJ can be the designated bunter.

Like

And the comeback begins.

Like

By the way, mentioned in the SWB broadcast, Moeller DFA’d and Colin Curtiss called to NY.

Like

6 runs and 8 hits in the 3rd inning and AJ is still in the ball game? Is this a throw away game or what?

Like

Nice play Curtis. The Dbacks outs are shots. This is the worse team in the NL and BUSTNUTT has given up 6 earned runs. There are HS pitchers here that are better than him. Girardi NEEDS to tell this clown to get his act together NOW! Have some *ALLS Joe.

Like

You have to listen to all of these tv guys listen about Jorge and AJ. Lets be honest, AJ is a selfish player. He always has been. Don’t give me that pie garbage. He just gave up another run. 6-0. That means he will get ********** and throw a few more meatballs. Jorge has to be saying to himself that this guy is a jerk. He is not a mentally strong person. Granderson saves AJ’s butt. He won’t even give him an acknowledgement.

Like

Bob,
What did the Toronto press have to say about A J’s temperament when he was there?

Like

GET him out NOW.

Like

All Aaron Boone keeps saying is that Burnett’s problem is his delivery. I mean isn’t this clown a Veteran? I mena we are not talking a rookie here, the BOZO is a vet. Posada sets up outside he throws in donw the middle, inside he throws it down the middle. If he’s got mechanics problems what the HELL does this guy do in his off day?

Like

I think that Seattle would take AJ and some money for Lee. Of course we would have to pay part of his salary but I think if you could lock Lee up for a longterm deal it would be a great trade. Seattle is terrible and an awful franchise. AJ would do well in the Northwest. A place where they do not care about baseball and a pitcher that likes to give everyone a chance to hit him.

Like

Bob,
Don’t be so serious. I’m not!!!

Like

And the Yankees go out with a whimper. What a contrast.

Like

robertg I disagree. This guy along with the Joke are paid a ton load of $$$ to perform. They do NOT perform consistently for my taste. Fact is I peddle both of them to the M;s for Lee right now.

Like

Bryan, here is my trade idea. AJ and four cows for an old Ford pickup?

Like

Can’t dump our pie man!!!

Like

Come on Robert. You have to know that AJ is tempermental and is not a consistent starting pitcher. He’s pitched a couple of good games this year early but lately he can’t locate his pitches and he’s being hit all over the park by the opposition. Sorry, Robert I think you ‘re wrong on this one. You can’t believe that with the way AJ has been pitching that Girardi can keep him in the starting rotation. The only way he’d keep him there is because they don’t want to admit they made a mistake and paid this guy way too much for one good year he had with the Jays pitching with Halliday.

Like

Saw a friend of mine who lives in Phoenix this weekend. He told me he was going to be at tonite’s game. When I saw that Burnett was pitching I told him expect the Yankees to lose. Burnett needs to be unloaded to Seattle for Lee asap.

Like

Lopez is awful but we will make him look like CY Young trying to climb back after ANay’s terrible start. Posada should walk up to him and punch him in the face.

Like

I disagree! Burnett is not useless! If there were not Burnett and Chamberlain, Seeknay would have nothing to say!!!

Like

Yeh, the Yankees are in first place now Bryan but with starting pitching like this tonight they won’t be there long.

Like

The question should not be what the Yankees do with Andy at the end of the year. I would trade AJ for Cliff Lee straight up right now. This guy has pitched great a few times but overall he is a freak’n head case. AJ needs to go. I am sick of everyone saying how he has such great stuff. He just got pasted all over Arizona. He got hit so hard that they decided to change the immigration law again. “AJ can immigrate to Arizona as long as he is wearing an opposing team’s jersey.”

Like

Gotta tell you the Yankees have got to be getting fed up with Burnett. I know I am.

Like

Why are we still having to suffer the pain of AJ Burnett on the mound. Every time he starts I get ready to have my heart broken. As an out of market fan, I look forward to watching my team on TBS and ESPN. At this point, I already know what I am in for when Burnett pitches. Cashman and Girardi have to trade him, please!! This is a nightmare!!

Like

It’s 10:30 here and we’re only in the 2nd inning. With a 5 run deficit already there’s no point in staying up late to watch this one. I’m shutting down with no expectation of a win. if I wake up in the morning and the Yankees have won I’ll be very surprised. Happy but surprised. We just get a game ahead of the Rays and then start playing like this. And the Sox are only 1 game behind us too so it’s no time to blow a game like this to a bottom feeder team like Arizona.

Like

Burnett does NOT determine the lineup. Girardi does. Time to unlaod this cancer crybaby.

Like

What a friggin’ disaster. Dig a hole in the 1st inning that it is going to be very difficult if not impossible to climb out of. And how many more runs is he going to give up tonight?

Like

oneof5 he is a Disgrace. I am so sick and tired of this clown blaming Posada for his trouble. He is a head case. Posada is a Hall of Famer and this JACKASS complains. GET RID OF HIM.

Like

You’ve got to be kidding. Three homers in the first inning? What’s with this guy? Gaudin could do better as a starter than AJ right now. It’s too bad Aceves is still injured. He would be a better choice than AJ. How many starts is he going to have to blow before Girardi pulls him out of the rotation. His best days are behind him and really they weren’t that great, certainly not deserving of the kind of money the Yankees threw at him.

Like

AJ Burnett is absoulutely USELESS. Three HRS in the 1st inning already. TRADE his *** right now. He is NOT worth the $$$$ and does NOT give a *amn. GET rid on him.

Like

Great he gives up another home run and now it’s 4-0. Right now AJ is a liability to this club and Girardi needs to find another starter in the system and put AJ in the pen for a while and find out what’s wrong with him, if it’s mechanics or if it’s mental. Either way it’s not working.

Like

Personally, I think AJ Burnett has lost it. He’s not the pitcher he was a couple of years ago and then he was only good because he was pitching with Doc Halliday. Way too much money on an average pitcher. He’s too prone to the home run ball. I think Cashman needs to consider a trade and bring in another starter with a younger arm and some good potential. He is extremely inconsistent and you never know which AJ is going to show up on a given night.

Like

Once again Michael Kay is the “Kiss of Death”. Commenting about Burnett giving up at least 1 run in the firast inning in his last 7 starts… Then BANG… HR…
If anthing Kay is consistantly a bad luck charm…
