Three Yankees infielders leading in All-Star votes

Derek Jeter has jumped back out among the top American League votegetters for this July’s All-Star Game at Angel Stadium, and Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano are also leading their respective infield positions at the first checkpoint.
After his name graced more AL ballots than anyone last year, Jeter is again a favorite of the fans, logging 639,227 votes in numbers released Monday by Major League Baseball – more than 400,000 over his nearest competitor at shortstop, the Rangers’ Elvis Andrus.
Cano (491,188) is enjoying a commanding lead at second base over Red Sox counterpart Dustin Pedroia (279,452). Teixeira needed a late surge to make the All-Star team last year, but he’s out front for now, logging 396,034 votes to put him ahead of the Twins’ Justin Morneau, who has 258,225.
At third base, Alex Rodriguez has received 411,655 votes, trailing the Rays’ Evan Longoria (541,253). Twins catcher Joe Mauer is pacing all AL votegetters by appearing on 644,533 ballots, a good chunk ahead of second-place catcher Jorge Posada (287,486).
Curtis Granderson, who made his first All-Star team last year, was ranked fifth among AL outfielders in Monday’s results, receiving 264,572 votes. Nick Swisher (229,944) was seventh and Brett Gardner (224,167) was eighth.
Injured Nick Johnson, who is expected to be sidelined until after the All-Star Game, was not ranked in the top five among AL designated hitters.

Bob, Yes, that was it. I couldn’t remember..
Is it me or did I just dream, I think someone earlier blogged that the Yanks had put in a claim for Soxer Darnell MacDonald and also mentioned Jr. in the same blog. Now it’s not there. I know I wasn’t seeing things! There are blogs missing between 11:30 and 3:30 this after noon,, It is now 6:33 P 5/25

Frank,
The story I heard was someone (maybe Martin) wouldn’t let eight year old Junior hang out on the bench or clubhouse when Senior played in NY and he still resents it.

Are you thinking of Boston’s Darnell MacDonald? He is a journeyman 30-something year old who was signed this year as outfield insurance for AAA. When Cameron and Ellsbury went down he got the call and jacked two drives in his first game. One cleared the Monster and the second hit it for a walk off single. The pitchers have since caught up with him and his BA is around .250-.260. He should be sent down or DFA’d when Cameron is activated tonight!

Bob, You are right, embarrassed may too strong a word, Maybe disappointed is a better choice. Being a Yankee fan for 70+ years, I get disgusted at our inability to be somewhat consistent.
Cano is the only one who is fairly consistent. Failure to deliver w/RISP is discouraging. Recently we can never tell what our aces will do on the mound… Why can’t Long help Tex? Maybe he needs a shrink? Cano maybe a better choice to bat 3rd W/Tex #5…. That could help!……….
Kennedy just didn’t have what it takes to pitch in NY. He had a bad attitude while here.. Some time ago I heard that Jr Griffey didn’t want to come to NY, something about his dad wasn’t treated well when with the Yanks.. Who is Macdonals?? Who will fill Thames spot if he’s been released? Russo? ..
“GO YANKEE!”

Just sitting here thinking on this off night, things could be worse. I could be an Oriole fan, they are 18 games out and on May 24th their playoff season is over.

Matt,
At least the 80′s teams had stars like Mattingly and Winfield to follow.

In the late 60′s besides a quickly fading Mantle, our best hitter was Jake Gibbs and deep threat Steve Whitaker.

In late 2007 or early 2008 there was one particular Boston fan gloating on his blog about the Red Sox second World Series championship over a four year span and how ?they were on top of the baseball world? of course ignoring Japan?s win in the WBC.

That set me to count how many World Series I had personally seen the Yankees play in my life and I counted 24. I was too young to count those in the 1940?s before 1949. So at a pace of one World Series every three years I calculated that the Boston fan (who was then 40 years old) would need to live to an age of 115 to catch up to me. Provided the Yankees appear no more over the span of 75 years. Now adding 2009 increases that number to 78 years and an age of 118!

With a record of 27 World Series championships I can?t ever imagine being embarrassed by the Yankees’ losing a few games, or series, or even multiple seasons.

What?s really neat is that the second best record of 10 is a tie?????????between the Cardinals and YOGI.

Here’s a little quote I came across today:

?Tampa Bay has played incredibly consistent baseball over the past few weeks and will go into its Monday series opener with Boston parked at an impressive milestone — the best 44-game start since the 2001 Seattle Mariners, who also started 32-12 before eventually posting the best record in AL history that season (116-46).?

Of course we all remember the Mariners going on to win their first championship that year as well as the start of their long string of World Series appearances.
