Birthplace of The Babe
Before Thursday’s game in Baltimore, I had the opportunity to visit the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum, which is something I’ve wanted to do for years while on the Yankees beat. I’m so glad I finally made it over there.
Just a short walk from Camden Yards at 295 Emory Street, the museum is built on the site of the row house where The Babe joined us on Feb. 6, 1895, at the time the rented home of Ruth’s grandparents. The history of the building alone is a neat tale – by the 1960s, it had fallen into disrepair and was scheduled to be razed before public outcry saved it.
The sections of the home where the Babe would have taken his first breaths have been restored with period decorations, including the upstairs bedroom where Ruth was born.
The rest of the museum is a tribute to Ruth’s life, including many artifacts donated by his family over the years, like a pair of bats he used during the 1927 season, original seats from the reserved section at Yankee Stadium and even a radio Ruth treasured in his New York apartment until his passing in 1948.
There are some amazing artifacts that somehow survived over the years, like the tattered gloves Ruth wore playing ball as a youth (in addition to his fielder’s glove, he also got behind the plate with a right-handed catcher’s mitt, which he used Jim Abbott-style) and what may be his first-known autograph – “George H. Ruth, World’s Worse (sic) Singer, World’s Best Pitcher,” scribbled on the inside cover of a hymnal book found under a floorboard at St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys in Baltimore.
Special thanks are in order for Mike Gibbons, the museum’s executive director, who took a few minutes out of his busy day to help show me around. If you’re planning on heading down to Baltimore the next time the Yankees are in town, you’ll definitely want to set aside some time to drop by the Ruth birthplace, as well as the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards.

Last year it was Wang, this year Vazquez. Hopefully he turns himself around somehow, because I doubt the Yankees will try to stretch out Joba unless they are absolutely certain Vazquez is done, which they won’t be.
This means the 5th starter would be Mitre. So, once again, get your game straight, Javy.

I have little doubt it will not be Vazquez unless some miracle happens orchestrated by Eiland!
My guess is Vazquez will be skipped next time round, rather than send him out in Fenway.
Thank god Hughes has been strong! But I would go with Aceves as the rotation replacement! Maybe Mitre will change my mind today.
Absolutely right a7989. The Boos at the stadium must have been loud and clear when Joe yanked him. You reach a point where Vasquez’s inability to pitch in pinstripes affects the entire team. The guy is this year’s version of Carl Pavano, a total bust. Some guys just cannot handle pitching for the Yankees and Javier is one of them.

Aceves is certainly an opton, but I wonder if Girardi considers him too valuable in his present Mendoza role. Certainly if it was a long term thing, I would imagine he would be the favorite.
I still refuse to give up hope that all of this will be rendered acedemic when Vazquez comes out of this. It appears an optimistic view to say the least at this point, but I shall hold on to it a little longer.

Based on spring training, Aceves actually beat Hughes for a rotation spot. You may be right about where his greatest value is!

a7889, it’s one thing to be optimistic but UNTIL Vasquez starts pitching better than Girardi needs to start looking at other options. Vasquez has NOT shown any ability to pitch well in pinstripes in his first go round in NY and it is only worse this year. He joins a long line of pitching hopefuls (J. Weaver, Pavano, Rhoden & Whitson to name a few) who have been BAD in NYC.
Maybe Sergio Mitre takes the ball in Fenway.

I think we are seeing the same problem with Vasquez that we saw with other pitchers we ‘ve had in the past, like Randy Johnson. ie. That they are hurt and will not admit it. No one goes from a 2+ era to a 9+ era in a just a few months. These guys don’t forget how to pitch, they just can’t perform as they normally do. For some macho reason they just don’t want to sit and recover. Instead they keep plugging along hoping for some miracle.
No one on the Yanks seemed to recognized the back problems Randy was suffering from. I, having had back problems recognized in his movements on the mound, that he was moving the same as I was in an effort to avoid the pain. That doesn’t say a whole lot for the coaches who should be able to see it. These are the same coaches we have now, and I believe that for either trust reasons or just stupidity, they do not see it.
I think that soon we will see him admit that he has pain somewhere that is hurting his performance.
In fact, mark my words, when he is pulled out of the rotation it will be because he has a physical problem. One that he is trying to hide right now.

What the heck was Cashman and Hal Steinbrenner smoking to bring Vasquez back to the Yankees? He was trash when they had him before and he is not any better now. Our loss is Atlanta’s gain. Cashman get rid of him now if you call yourself a GM. But then again I could never see you in that roll. Must of bought your way in. Worst deal ever.

It sounds like you think that this is a personal thing in the case of Vasquez and his poor performance so far this season. I’m sure, it’s exactly the opposite. It’s only May 1st. But, either he’s injured or he’s or he’s simply trying too hard to live up to the Yankee fans’ expectatations. Trying to be a #1, and trying to make up for the “unforgivable mistke” of surrendering that grand slam.
Give this guy the same break that Arod needed in NY before he got it right. ie. Get your head straight, forget trying to be a #1 in the rotation, throw strikes, and forget about the outcome of the game, just concentrate on the moment, and just get this guy out. Forget the rest.
And, unless he is injured (which I think he is), the Yanks ought to get him a sports shrink to help him relax and do what comes naturally.
