4/25 – Yankees at Angels

The Yankees and Angels wrap up this three-game series this afternoon here at Angel Stadium, with Javier Vazquez chasing his second win of the road trip opposite former New York Mets legend Scott Kazmir.

The biggest note is that Nick Johnson is feeling a little better after treatment and Tuesday appears very much in play. Both catchers are in the lineup today, with Jorge Posada DHing, and in the case of emergency Ramiro Pena would be strapping on the shin guards. Obviously Joe Girardi hopes that doesn’t have to happen. Marcus Thames is drawing the start because of his prior success against Kazmir.
Of course, the Yankees are heading to the White House on Monday and expect to see a lot of wide eyes from the rookies doing it for the first time. For a guy like Andy Pettitte, though, it’s almost old hat. He compared visiting the White House to his first trip to Fenway Park or Wrigley Field — when you’re about to meet your fourth president (Clinton, Bush, Bush II), I guess it would seem that way.
Here are the lineups:
YANKEES
Jeter SS
Swisher RF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Cano 2B
Posada DH
Thames LF
Granderson CF
Cervelli C
Pitching: Javier Vazquez (1-2, 8.27)
ANGELS
Izturis SS
Abreu RF
Hunter CF
Matsui DH
Morales 1B
Rivera LF
Kendrick 2B
Napoli C
Wood 3B
Pitching: Scott Kazmir (1-1, 7.45)

Looks like Nick Johnson is still out. I guess there is no sense rushing him, particularly with his injury history.

I’m with you yankeepride. Until Vasquez starts pitching like he did with the Braves and Expos, I remain unconvinced that he can pitch in the AL. It amazes me the difference between his stint with the Braves and what we have seen this year. Difference between night and day.

Seeknay I’m w/you Vazquez is a NL pitcher. For a 200 inning pitcher he’s a failure, 5 just doesn’t cut it. They should make up a package for Milwaukee and try to get Braun, He’d fit our needs in LF… Tex is also bothering me, He needs to shake this April slump. Bench him a couple of games to get rid of the cob webs.. It’s getting tiresome hearing all the excuses from Joe, Not just on Tex..

Be prepared for the Yankees to show more patience!

I’m not saying I’d run Vasquez out of town but he just has not shown he can pitch in the AL or with the Yankees. The facts show he was a disaster in 2004 and his start the second time around is not convincing me that he has the makeup to pitch in the AL or in NY. He NEEDS to get his act together.

Like

Sean,
For me it’s too soon to tell if Vazquez will come around. Worst case may have him delt to the NL in July. But there are some here who reach for the fire alarm immediately when a match is struck! Of course they are welcome, but we could use more posts when disasters are not iminent.

Robert. I don’t know how you’re able to post. I was trying to post during the game but it would go really slow and nothing would happen.

Javier Vazquez is going to do what he did when he was with the Yankees the first time. He can’t pitch in New York. It’s not in his make up. It was a bad move to have him as the fourth starter.

Like

I doubt that most here are ready to run Vazquez out of town just yet. I know I?m not, but that shouldn?t surprise anyone!

Like

Right now Vazquez is in a funk, but with the other 4 starters going, he is going to get time to work himself out of it. My guess is Burnett will go through a swoon at some point, Hughes and Pettite will drop off from their unreal starts and even CC will have a few bad days. That’s assuming everyone remains healthy all season. Thus the Yanks do need Vazquez to pitch better.

Personally I believe that he will, and I certainly believe Girardi isn’t going to have him skip a start just yet. He does need to work on his mechanical flaws though, particularly with runners in scoring position. If he goes two or three more starts and hasn’t sorted this out, then skipping a couple of starts and working out of the ‘pen becomes a option. Again, I do not believe it will come to that, but hey if it does, it worked out well for Moose a couple of years back.

Don’t know if the rest of you think this but I’m losing patience with Vasquez. He reminds me of Rick Rhoden, Ed Whitson and others. Good NL pitchers but absolute disasters in the AL. If this team loses today Vasquez has over half of the losses. Amazing that Javier has no trouble with his mechanics in the NL but has been a total bust with the Yankees now Twice.

Yea, I agree. Vasquez has to get himself going. I know its still April and everything, but he simply has to start preforming and giving the Yankees a chance to win when he starts. Every pitcher gets lit up, but usually the good pitchers give their team a chance to win more than they get lit up.
