One last-minute snag for the Yanks

All in all, this was a productive spring for the Yankees. No major injuries, no major issues.

Except one.

When big league teams go on road trips, players and coaches are required to wear dress shirts and jackets to and from the plane. But right as everyone was scrambling to board a bus bound for TPA this afternoon, bullpen coach Mike Harkey realized he had forgotten his dress shirt.

That’s a small problem on a regular day — just hand a clubhouse attendant some cash and have him run to the store. It’s a bigger problem the day before Opening Night, with everyone rushing to catch the plane. And it’s an even bigger problem — quite literally — when the shirtless man is Harkey, who stands 6-foot-5. Somewhere in Tampa, a big & tall shop just found some business.

“That’s what happens when you try to be smart, you want to wear shorts to the park because it’s warm,” manager Joe Girardi cracked. “Just get dressed. It’s not that hard.”

Javier Vazquez threw 80 pitches today in his final tune-up before next week’s start in Tampa Bay. He allowed three runs, but don’t read too much into that. He was facing a group of players he had never pitched against in his life.

“I hate that,” Vazquez said. “It’s something you have to do just to get your work in, but it’s not fun when you’re facing your own guys.”

The Yankees signed catcher Chad Moeller, released catcher Mike Rivera and acquired utilityman Robbie Hammock from the Rockies for a player to be named later. Moeller and Hammock are both headed to Triple-A Scranton.

That about wraps things up in Tampa. I’m headed north to Boston, where I’ll meet back up with Bryan Hoch on Sunday night. In the meantime, feel free to follow me on Twitter @anthonydicomo for all Opening Night-related updates.
