3/25 – Yankees at Orioles

Hectic day here with the Yankees (OK, when isn’t it?) as Phil Hughes has been announced as the fifth starter and Chad Gaudin has been unconditionally released. Here’s Hughes’ reaction, passed along from George M. Steinbrenner Field:

“It was what I set out in the spring to do. I grew up a starter in high school, minor leagues, even my first couple partial seasons in the big leagues. It was something that I really wanted and I feel like I’m ready for the challenge and ready for the season that lies ahead. I’m just looking to go out and put together as many quality starts as I can and give our guys a chance to win every day. That’s really all I can ask from myself.”

Here are the lineups for this afternoon’s game at Ed Smith Stadium (Twitpic photo), the former home of the Reds and a place that has been impressively spruced up since we were here last…

Gotta think the Yanks will spend that 2 $mil pretty quickly in July if not sooner! Dye would probably want more playing time than the Yanks can offer.

Yep, Thames has essentially made the team.

It looks like Thames gets the spot as a proven MLB bat, not for what he’s done this spring. Since he’s still around, I guess there is a slim chance that Winfree might stick instead.

Someone mentioned that that Marcus Thames made the team as a bench player. I hope that’s not true. he stinks! If they want a right handed bat with some pop and a much higher average off the bench, why not try to pick up Jermaine Dye. I think he’s still available. they saved almost 2 million dollars by cutting Gaudin’s salary. I’ll bet Dye would sign a major league deal for that.

Not a very stellar spring training record, beaten by the lowly Orioles. Hopefully this doesn’t signal the kind of start the Yankees will have again in the regular season. Now they have the starting rotation finalized it should help. Joba is better in the set up role anyway. He’s only good for an inning or two at 98 mph. Where’s the offence against the Orioles? It’s been hot and cold in the spring season.

BP,
Winn did not get many chances (3 or 4) and was flawless. Nothing challenging!

I take that back. Thought we had live play-by-play. Here’s the live box, though.

Play by play should be on MLB Gameday. 7-0 here in the 4th, a real nailbiter. Albaladejo has been reassigned but he’s on the trip anyway.
