Pena wins utility job
After Wednesday’s game, the Yankees sent the following players to Minor League camp: right-handers Jonathan Albaladejo and Mark Melancon; infielders Juan Miranda and Kevin Russo; and outfielder Greg Golson. … The moves lock up a utility role bid for Ramiro Pena, who appeared in 69 games for New York last season. … The Yankees have 34 players remaining in camp.
- Girardi said that they did talk about the No. 5 starter, hearing all of the voices that they want to hear, but there’s nothing official yet and they’re not quite ready to announce anything. “It will be soon,” he said. “For the most part, we have a pretty good idea of what we want to do.” (Cough – still think it’s Phil Hughes.)
- Other remaining tasks on the agenda – figuring out if the Yankees want to carry Boone Logan or Royce Ring (or neither), and selecting between frontrunner Marcus Thames and David Winfree to be the right-handed bat off the bench.
That’s all for tonight. Check Yankees.com for stories about Javier Vazquez’s start (good) and Francisco Cervelli’s adventure at third base (impressive). We’ll be back with you bright and early in the morning.
