Wrapping up from Steinbrenner Field
Put another day officially in the books here at Yankees camp, highlighted by Javier Vazquez’s first appearance on a mound in his new (old) uniform.
“I let a few go at the end,” said Vazquez, who threw 35 fastballs and
changeups in the session. “In the beginning, I was just trying to get a
feel. [I’m] just getting the arm ready until games start. Bullpens
right now are just getting a feel for the mound, for the ball,
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he has to pay attention to
Vazquez a little differently than other pitchers in camp, since he is
the only new face among the starters. But he likes what he sees.
“He works very hard, and I’ve always enjoyed his work,” Girardi
said. “I know he’s a very tough competitor. I am curious to watch him
pitch. I have a lot of faith in him. He’s going to be a big part of our
I spent some time watching Jorge Posada go through drills with the other catchers and was struck by how truly accessible he is to them. I don’t expect him to ever yield a six-lane expressway to the starting job for anybody, the way Joe Girardi once did in 1998, but Posada doesn’t seem to mind the give and take with the fresh-faced backstops coming up through the chain.
“I’m going to help them on stuff, I’m going to try and be there for them,” Posada said. “That’s all you can do at this point. I can teach. I would love to do whatever it takes to keep them happy and part of the team.”
Other notes: Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes started throwing breaking balls in their 35-pitch bullpens … Girardi said that Zach McAllister looks like he has a very good sinker and commands his fastball well on a downhill plane. He’s generally regarded as a potential fourth starter as a big leaguer. … Looks like the Yankees will see Johnny Damon on March 10 in Lakeland. “We all miss Johnny,” Girardi said. “This is the hard part of the game. I’ll root for Johnny, except when he’s playing against us.”
Remember, more Yankees pictures are available by clicking this link. I took 180 this afternoon (some better than others) and uploaded the best of the bunch.
