World Series Game 6: Yankees vs. Phillies

Now that Mary J. Blige has completed her “Bleeding Gums Murphy” rendition of tonight’s National Anthem… (points to anyone who gets that classic ‘Simpsons’ reference)

We’re ready to go in the Bronx on a cool but clear night. The building is packed and this place is juiced with what should be a much different crowd than in Games 1 & 2. All that stands between the Yankees and World Series title No. 27 are the next 27 outs, and they’ll look to Andy Pettitte to deliver the lion’s share of those.

With “old goat” Pedro Martinez standing on the mound for Philadelphia in one of the most anticipated World Series games in recent memory, this could be the last night of the 2009 MLB season. I’m predicting it will be.

PHILLIES
Jimmy Rollins SS
Shane Victorino CF
Chase Utley 2B
Ryan Howard 1B
Jayson Werth RF
Raul Ibanez DH
Pedro Feliz 3B
Ben Francisco LF
Carlos Ruiz C

Pitching: RHP Pedro Martinez (0-1, 2.08 ERA in postseason)

YANKEES
Derek Jeter SS
Johnny Damon LF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Hideki Matsui DH
Jorge Posada C
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Brett Gardner CF

Pitching: LHP Andy Pettitte (3-0, 3.24 ERA in postseason)

watched every game and now i will go out get about 3 tee shirts and a hat with World Series champs on it…i love the way the Yankee brass make moves although i don’t always agree with them…and i loved the way the players came from behind so many times…and i love Mo Rivera…but the whole team played great…and i’m happy to be a Yankees Fanatic….Can they do it back 2 back…W.S.#28…? YES

I’m happy to admit that I’m eating crow. It does taste a lot like chicken. The Empire has Struck Back & I will call Coach Girardi Darth Unconventional. That’s the way he coached all season and I’ll be damned that it worked. It’s a great feeling when none of the buster Angels’ & Dodgers’ fans out here in Cali can talk trash. I have my Yankees cap & sweatshirt on & it’s about 76 degrees. I’m sweating & I don’t care! I think Girardi should change his jersey to # 28. I agree Cano has got to go.

just saw that ***** rollins has another stupid quote. he says “the better team lost the series”

when is this guy going to learn that he sounds like an idiot wheneve he speaks and he should keep his “predictions” to himself. He has absolutely no class. he didn’t do anything in the series and his phillies got beat.

This one was sweet, but not like ’77 after all those really bad teams. The beauty of this one is we’d all become pessimists whereas in the late 90’s we were optimists. The recent disappointments—- Dbacks and that bloop hit, the Fish and our inability to hit their pitchers, the Red Sox debacle, Pavano—-the pain was washed away last night and optimism is now back in Yankee universe. Don’t all of you look forward to whipping the Sox next year. Isn’t it great to be back on top!!!!

I told u all: Yanks in 6… ;)

I know we all like to analyze ad-nauseum the performance, mental-state and decisions of our favorite team, but I’ve just taken the approach that it doesn’t matter what we would’ve done, it’s what was done and whether or not ‘it’ was successful or not. Obviously what the team did was by and large, successful. Tex didn’t have a great series, Cano either… Burnett, Joba and probably a few others, but what really separated this performance was the team as a team. They picked each other up, over and over again. I too felt there was a sort of bias by the plate umps, like they wanted the series to go on for some reason (or they have a personal bias against the Yankees)… too many times that punk Buck would just slobber all over the Phillies pitchers for a ‘called strike’ and show us the pitch-track and too often they didn’t show us the same for our guys. I wish Fox would rectify that, I’m so sick of seeing the bias of all of them. Even Guillen’s punk **** picking an NL team over his own league. It’s fine and dandy for a person to have their opinion, but when it’s broadcast time, that needs to be shelved and they need to CALL THE GAME and stop with their bias. Enough of my soap-box on that.

This team really showed a lot of different character than the previous team of the last 4-5 years. Seriously. I don’t know if it had a lot to do with the new ballpark, or what exactly, but this team had destiny written all over it pertinere from game 1 of the Regular season. Even with A-Rod being out a month, you immediately got the sense that we’d be just fine. Pitching was better and more consistent. Hitting was better and more consistent, from top to bottom. Yes, I think Hughes felt the pressure of the post-season more than anything, he was a different pitcher over the ‘two seasons’. Joba too, but that’s what you tend to expect from youngters, especially in NY where the pressure is immense.

Congratulations to the whole organization and all of the Best Fans in the World, #27 is finally on the board!

We beat up on Joe and Crashman and the team sometimes through the season and the postseason but what you can say about Andy, about Mo and about Matsui tonight? They were great. They won as a team. Who’ll be back next year? Time will tell. But congratulations to the players, and the management. There are always those who rag on the yankees because they can buy a team every year. Everyone is else is envious of the fact they have the money to do it. But it takes more than money. They really came together as a team this year. It was fun, even blogging on this site throughout the season. Going to miss talking to you guys and reading your comments. See you all at Spring Training!! Keep well.

Mo is the most valuable yankee, but for this series I say Matsui. And if Rivera gets 3 more outs we can all start complaining, rejoicing and analyzing our way to no 28, lol.

Don’t bring Cano back for next year. Trade him for something. He has been totally useless in the postseason at the plate. He’s just whiffing at everything that comes near him, or far away from him. And his gum chewing and blowing bubbles drives me nuts. He hasn’t taken this post season seriously at all. We should be able to get something for him that would produce in the post season.

Well my fellow bloggers this is where we want the Phils to be. 5 outs away a 4 run lead and Mo. on the mound.

Talk about getting the job done. A 3-pitch strikeout of their best hitter. I say leave him for Howard at least. I know its the world series, but with a 4 run lead Girardi doesn’t need to push Rivera 2 innings. He isn’t the youngest pitcher in the world. Have Mo up, ready to come in at first sign of trouble though, of course.

Hopefully with my Andy Pettite signed ball we can hang on and hang in. He has got out of the fourth although the home plate ump made him earn it as ball three for mine was strike 3. Rob what was it on gameday.
