World Series Game 5: Yankees at Phillies

As the Yankees try to put away their 27th World Series championship and “Win One For the Boss,” as the grounds crew t-shirts said at Yankee Stadium, there is a minor bit of news to report — the Yankees have replaced Melky Cabrera on the World Series roster with Ramiro Pena, granted Major League Baseball’s approval after Cabrera suffered a strained left hamstring in Game 4.

Should they polish this off, the Yankees will have employed three starters this postseason (Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte)…the last team to reach the World Series using only three postseason starters was the 1992 Braves (Maddux, Glavine, Avery)…the last to win the World Series using three postseason starters was the 1991 Twins (Morris, Tapani, Erickson).

New York has scored 15 combined runs over the last two games, marking their most runs in consecutive World Series games since posting 18 runs over Games 1 and 2 of the 1998 World Series vs. San Diego. And they are 8-0 in World Series play when taking a 3-games-to-1 lead, winning Game 5 six times. The Bombers have never gone to seven games in the World Series when taking such a lead, and they certainly don’t intend to.

Here are the lineups for the potential clincher:

YANKEES
Derek Jeter SS
Johnny Damon LF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Nick Swisher RF
Robinson Cano 2B
Brett Gardner CF
Jose Molina C
A.J. Burnett P

Pitching: RHP A.J. Burnett (1-0, 3.55 ERA in postseason)

PHILLIES
Jimmy Rollins SS
Shane Victorino CF
Chase Utley 2B
Ryan Howard 1B
Jayson Werth RF
Raul Ibanez LF
Pedro Feliz 3B
Carlos Ruiz C
Cliff Lee P

Pitching: LHP Cliff Lee (3-0, 0.54 ERA in postseason)

The Yanks need to sign Lackey & slot him behind C.C. Burnett is a # 3. Bring Pettite back for #4 & keep Gaudin as 5.

It’s obvious to me that the Yanks do not want to win this series. They’ve coughed up the lead pretty much in the 1st inning of every game. I’m not talking about 1 run either. The same issues that we’ve been b*itching about for the last 2 years is haunting this team: starting rotation is weak, the bench is weaker, & the bullpen sucks. The Phils have all of the momentum & the Yanks have everything to lose. I sense a huge meltdown on the Yanks’ part & no #27.

Gerry,
Since the alternative to signing Burnett was the 3 year 5 month older Derek Lowe who went 15-10 for Atlanta (.600 wpt) I’m happy with Burnett’s 13-9 (.590 wpt.)

When is a yankee pitcher gonna grab some balls and throw a 90mhr fastball in Utleys ear!!! Get him off the plate!!! Not one pitch has even been inside, let alone on top of him.

There are 2 things that need to be said about last nights game. First, why no replays of any pitches for the Yankees that was just off the plate (maybe). The strike zone was tight on the pitching for the Yankees. It was not a evened called game. Second, the phillies should be really worried about the inability of there pitchers to get any strikeouts in this game. The number of strikeouts have went down every game for Yankees hitters. That is a great concern more balls in play means more hits. This will be over on Wednesday. As far as Burnett, wrong pitcher with the wrong umpire. Dana was not going to give him the curve on the outside corner for nothing. He made him find the middle of the plate.

Ok. Before all of you start clamoring on Lee in game 7, that’s likely his BP day so MAYBE at most he’d come out for an inning or two but to stretch him out on 2 days rest. Besides we tagged him for 5 last night. Anything is possible.

And someone correct me but isn’t Chad Gaudin on the roster? Why not give him a chance? it’s clear that Girardi was planning to throw away game 5 anyway and you’re already down 6 runs. So why not?

Quick show of hands…. Who didn’t see that happening?

I suspect a lot of you guys now understand the frustration Jays fans had with Burnett. At times he looks like the best there is and other times the worst. I swear the guy just doesn’t have it between the ears, something is missing on this guy. And it’s not short rest, the best game he ever pitched for Toronto was on short rest.
I don’t think he’ll ever be more than a .500 pitcher, don’t know why with the stuff he has and its frustrating to watch him, believe me, I know after watching him for 3 years.

Good luck to the Yanks in game 6.

Jesus Christ, wut the fck is wrong w/Tex? I mean this guy goes swimming for a pitch that I knew was coming! This guy is a moron…you know they do not want to pitch to Alex therefore wait for a fastball – this is common sense! Same thing w/Jeter, this pitcher is shittin bricks so why would you help him out with a pitch inside?

In ending, the bottom of this lineup is going to be the death of this team – Cano is lost, Gardner? I have no words for this guy.

I really, really hope Andy is up for this on short rest…AJ was a disaster…this guy did nothing tonite! where’s the emotion, the fire? You’re pitching for a clincher and he showed nothing! The Yanks are in a bind!

TG we won’t see Lee ’til game 7!

We need a catcher who can call for pitches that are not home run pitches. Utley should by now be pitched to carefully not fat pitches down the middle. come on. they need to send Bret Gardner packing along with Burnett. who has not learned how to throw something other than a fat fastball. needs to work both corners of the plate not just a letter high fast ball. Coke and Aceves need to go packing with Gardner and Burnett.

Good job Phil!

Without Coke’s 94 mph fastballs we’d only be down 1!

Those were not fastballs he threw RobertG they were meatballs. By the way as much as I have blasted Hughes in the postseason he threw well tonight.

Like this

I agree endeavor throw at him. The only two guys that pitched well tonite so far were Robertson and Aceves. Coke was a Joke. Another guy that needs to learn how to grow up and pitch.

start blasting utley like they blast a-rod you a$$hole!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree with you there RobertK might as well put him in this game is over. Let’s see what he’s made of.

Great to see that old footage from 1950. I watched that series live!

We really do want to give any chance of winning this game away bringing Aceves in. He has bombed out every game he’s pitched in the post season.

Signing off everyone. Can’t take any more tonight. The outcome is inevitable. They can’t hope to come back against Lee and he’s in for the long term. See you on Wednesday and let’s hope for a better outcome!

Like this

It’s ok bringing Aceves in when it’s 6-2 because it doesn’t really matter. But bringing him in the late innings behind a run or two or ahead a run or two and it’s a different story. He hasn’t done it for us this postseason. But neither have some of the other relievers. It’s up to Andy to get us the next win in the Bronx. I wouldn’t want to see this series go to a 7th game even if it is in Yankees stadium. The Phillies can win in the Stadium. They’ve demonstrated that already.

Good job Alfredo!

I’m still not watching the game. With Aceves pitching I can’t bear to see what the score is going to end up being, and the way that the Yankees have been hitting Lee. He’ll probably pitch 9 innings again tonight.

It’s about time Cano started hitting. Good to see. Man Gardner was overmatched there.

Robbie’s getting good wood on the ball tonight!

When you got your boot on their jugular you crush them. However, you need a better performance than what the Yankees got out of Burnett tonite.

Like this

Reality is you make excuses for his inability to grow the *uck up and become a better pitcher. He needs to grow up and learn how to become a pitcher rather than shaking off his catcher, throwing a down the middle of the plate fastball when you are ahead in the count. Tired of hearing about his potential he needs to grow up.

Robert G: I think the yankees feel like you do the way they’re playing tonight. They’d rather finish at Yankees stadiium so this game doesn’t really matter. But hey, anything can happen with leaving it down to the 6th and 7th games even if it is in the stadium. Remember the year the Yankees were up 3-0 on the Sox?
And if the yankees don’t win the next game then it could come down to Lee and CC and so far Lee has been lights out. The Yankees just can’t hit him. He’s got them bamboozled.

Reality is under 200 MLB innings!

Nice grab Brett!

ok 6-2 now let’s keep chipping away at their lead. BTW I hope our manager has made notes on the performance by Robertson tonite. I have more confidence in Robertson than I do either Aceves or Hughes.

4 down with 4 innings left. Not impossible, but I would like to see a Stadium WS celebration!

oneof5 RobertG is the eternal optimist. Frankly I think he is Hughes’ father myself. Sometimes reality needs to be faced.

If I were Manuel I’d get Lee out soon and see if I could use him in game 7. Man I just cannot believe how BAD Burnett was tonite. He’s a better pitcher than what the Yankees have seen this year.

Let’s go Yankees? Robert, you’ve got to mean back at Yankees stadium. You don’t expect them to come back tonight against Lee and with the Yankees bullpen having to carry us the rest of the game? I even saw Aceves warming up. Good night.

Let’s hope Andy is up for the challenge on Wednesday night.

I’ve got to get away from the TV for a while. I can’t keep watching this debacle tonight. It’s too frustrating. As far as I’m concerned the game is over. Let’s just hope the Phillies don’t go long enough in the series to bring Lee back in for the 7th game or we’re done even with CC pitching.

When all this is over I hope that upper management pedals Cano. He wore out his welcome with me two years ago. Surely the Yankees can get a better 2nd baseman then this guy.

Like this

They should have started Gaudin tonight. He would have done better than AJ, certainly not any worse and you’re right seeknay AJ could have been saved for Yankees stadium with 5 days rest rather than 3. You can perhaps use CC on short rest once or twice but you can’t do that every series particularly as the series gets longer. Trying to get by with 3 starters is coming back to bite them.

Like this

Cano is NOT getting a pass from me, he is another WORTHLESS friggin OVER PAID UNDER ACHEIVING P O C !!!! Time to sit someone for the rest of the series!!!!!

Like this

Cano is driving me nuts in the postseason. He is terrible at the plate. He looks like he’s not even trying to hit the ball. And his stupid gum chewing and lackadaisical attutide in his at bats is really annoying. We wouldn’t be where we are in this series if it wasn’t for ARod and Damon and Jeter. The bottom of the order tonight is weak. Why doesn’t Girardi bring in Posada now that AJ is out? Molina is useless at the plate. This is a hole too big to climb out of with Lee pitching. I guess they’re going to have to win it in Yankees stadium.

why is cano getting a pass for his suck *** play in the biggest series of his life?!?!?!!????

Na come on blame it on the friggin Mental Midget Girardi for starting Burnett tonight. Now what Pettitte on 3 days rest, we all know how that will end.
Should have NEVER started Burnett, let the players come oout swinging and playing small ball to try to put some runs upo against Lee and if they lost like they are we would have had Burnett home, BUT KNOW THE FRIGGIN mental midget has to over manage AGAIN and friggin bloe it big…THIS MAY BE THE SERIES!!!!
