World Series Game 3: Yankees at Phillies

Greetings from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, where the tarpaulin was spread across the playing field for approximately two hours tonight. But the Yankees and Phillies are going to play baseball tonight — first pitch has been announced for 9:15 p.m. ET.

This is just the second World Series game to be played as late as Oct. 31, and you should remember the other one — it was the evening that Derek Jeter spurred a billion merchandise items marked, “Mr. November,” belting a walkoff home run off Byung-Hyun Kim to defeat the D-backs in Game 4 of the terrorism-delayed 2001 World Series.

“It was a special time,” Jeter said. “Especially in New York City,
after Sept. 11 playing in those games — they were pretty emotional.
Those three games in New York were probably three of the most exciting
games that I’ve been a part of. The atmosphere at Yankee Stadium was
unbelievable, so that’s what stands out the most.”

Can this Halloween sequel match up? Andy Pettitte and Cole Hamels will have the opportunity to find out. And what’s a little rain, anyway? It may be Philadelphia, but the Yankees know what this is. As Jorge Posada says, “This is Yankee weather.”

Here are the lineups:

Let’s go Yankees!

Let’s go A-Rod!

Hamel’s surprise, mostly fastballs!

Cano with his best Soriano imitation. Keep swinging with no discipline from the heels Robinson eventually you might connect just like Soriano did, once!

*amn it AP!

What’s he Werth?

this f#cking team makes any pitcher look like cy young and any hitter look like babe ruth!!

3-0 not good!!

Now can anyone on this team get a hit this inning? To be in a 3-0 hole this early is not good.

Replay and the umps got it right. Someone tell Selig that’s why you should have replay. Once again Cano you just keep swinging without discipline & from the heels and see where it will get you. PLATE DISCIPLINE *AMN IT!!! When the *ell are you going to get some????

We’ve seen this Andy Petitte before this year, off to a bad start, getting hit, allowing runs. Sometimes he settles down after a bad early inning but never usually gets beyond the 5th and when they try to go longer he gets in trouble again. A lot of pitches thrown that inning. The way the Yankees have been hitting in this series and the number of runs they’ve put across the plate 3 runs is a big hole to get out of. Somehow I don’t have the confidence in this team this series like I did in the ALCS. The PHillies are strong offensively and with their pitching. With the DH taken out of the equation I think it hurts the Yankees more than the Phillies. I just don’t have a very good feeling. If they lose tonight it’s going to be tough coming back. They’ve got to win at least one in Philly to come back home. 2 would be a lot better.

A7989 when you lack the plate discipline of a Cano he can make me look like Cy Young.

3 innings=35 pitches=trouble

Andy’s at 60.

Strike on Gameday!

That’s a homerun. Come on umps.

Hold your breath!

OK! Get’s us started!!!

Yeah. A Rod. A Rod. Nice way to get your first World Series hit

Gotta pheel bad in Philly!

So now this is a ballgame, but looking at the swings of Posada and Cano, Hamels is still pitching very well.

Wanna see Hamels lose it quick!

Well, well. Nicely done Pettite.

SURPRISE!!!

You might be getting your wish Robert.

Looks like Hamels’ commands only the fastball and his velocity is a little down now!

Now we’re up!

I got my Swish too!!!

Time to pound the pen

I pheel goooooood!

If you’re gonna swing on 3-0 you better not pop-up.

Lots of inexperience in our pen!

Tell you Hamels did not look like the same pitcher as the one last year. His arm looked tired all year.

Like a phlair!

The 1950 Phillies were the Whiz Kids. This year our pen is!

Dammnit Cano you are now batting .091 for the WS wake the *ELL up!

Have you ever seen more useless at bats than Cano is showing tonight? Man some nights he is totally off and after striking out he has the supercilious look on his face and chews his stupid gum and blows bubbles. I hate his seeming non chalant, don’t care, attitude!!

Let’s go Joba!

Tex really looks uncomfortable at the plate. he swings at the worst pitches. He seems off balance. He’s certainly not living up to what he did during the regular season or the money he is being paid. He’s doing well in the field but we’re not paying him the big bucks just to be a good first baseman. Now the bull pen. This should be an adventure until we get to Mo in the 9th.

Glad Happ is gone!

It would be huge if the pen holds on so that Rivera can get some extra rest. Though it feels good knowing that if a couple of guys go on Girardi can just have Enter Sandman flick on.

Joba can’t pitch more than one inning? Why the *ELL is Hughes up in the pen?????

oneof5 I have been fed up with Cano’s attitude long before this playoff season.

Come on Marte!

Phinally a healthy Marte. Whatta sight!

Who the *ell was that guy on the mound for the Yankees in the bottom of the 8th??? Marte????? WOW!!!

When he’s right, Hughes pounds the bottom of the strike zone. Not where he pitched Ruiz or Feliz either.

If it was Lee tomorrow, I might bench Cano for one, but, with Blanton, I’m not so sure!

Will Phil shine in Philly?

Four run lead and Hughes coming in? Why am I so worried? Phil just throw STRIKES to Jorge. It’s pitch and catch. I’d still have Mo. warming up.

Keep it low!

That helps!

Smelled that coming!

Does Girardi ever learn? How often do you keep bringing Hughes into the late innings and have him give up runs and home runs? Where’s Robertson? A bad call by Girardi to give Hughes another chance even if they’re ahead 4 runs. You can’t afford to give this game away when you’re up 4 runs in the 9th. Boy some of the Yankee hitters are looking bad in this series. Swish got it turned around tonight but Cano and Cabrera and Tex look bad.

Well after another great performance by Hughes, Mariano closes them out 2-1 lead with CC tomorrow.

Fortunately, Mo bailed us out as usual. Certainly Marte got it done tonight. I’m surprised because he hasn’t got it done all season. Will Tex and Mo and Cabrera get on track for the next game? I hope so. Anyway, a good win. Better ahead 2-1 than behind 2-1 in the Phillies’ ball park.

oneof5 I think we may have seen the last of Phil Hughes in the WS. If not than Girardi is as stupid as some on this blog have claimed.

Rivera threw 5 pitches to get 2 outs. Best closer in the game EVER!!!
