World Series Game 2: Yankees vs. Phillies

Here are the lineups as the Yankees get set to take on the Phillies in Game 2 of the 2009 World Series, with A.J. Burnett trying to get the Bombers back to even as Yankee Stadium welcomes back the most influential performer in its history – Pedro Martinez (or so he says).

Just a reminder, in Pedro’s former life as a Met, his last start here was June 27, 2008. Martinez got tagged for six runs in 5 2/3 innings as the Yankees – behind Sidney Ponson – shut the Mets out, 9-0. Can Pedro recapture his magic? Will Good A.J. be on display as he pitches for the first time this postseason with the Yankees trailing in a series?

Let’s go Yankees!

Well nothing like a great first inning to get the Yankees started, 2 K’s and an infield popout. You would think that Tex with his hitting struggles would at least try and hit the ball to the left side. Hell you could drive a mack truck through that left side. AJ is going to have to throw the game of his career tonight because this team as a whole is NOT hitting.

Both hits could have been caught. A bit of tough luck there for Burnett, who is absolutely on today. Yanks need to score early and often now, in what is close to a must win game.

The Yanks are down 1-0 in the series and the game. Too early to start calling them quitters.

Well at least they got a hit in the 2nd preserving the legacy of Don Larsen. Tell me folks on the Ibanez catch does anyone think Damon would have gotten to that ball? Because I’m not sure he would have.

This server is screwed up bigtime.

FOO!

Win one for the Zimmer!

this team was just happy to get this far….AND THAT’S IT!!!!! they have absolutely Q-U-I-T

PHOO!

Announcers in love with Pedro!!

Molina damage!!!

Let’s go Yankees!

I don’t entirely blame them for it. I mean, it’s Pedro. The guy who pitched all those years in the AL East, and has an insane sub-3 lifetime ERA. If we weren’t Yankee fans we would all love him too. Even without the Zimmer incident we’d still have a problem with him as a former Sox.

Pedro is one of those veteran guys that is still a solid pitcher, but people remember the guy who was the most dominant pitcher of his generation.

Yuck!

finally Girardi benched Swish. It was about time. However, with Hairston in the bottom of the lineup is pretty weak with Molina catching. Not much power in the bottom of the lineup but not much power anyway if Swish keeps hitting like he has been. I don’t get a good feeling about this game so far. Yankees offence has gone south in this series and the pitching has been off especially the bull pen. We can’ even get to the suspect Philly bull pen because the starters are pitching so strong and long. Yankees need to get Pedro out by the 6th inning at least to have a chance to put some runs on the board. Where has all the power gone in this series? Even ARod is striking out all the time. Tex still hasn’t got on track. What’s with him? He’s going to be the ARod of old, great in the regular season and can’t get it done in the post season. If the Yankees lose this one they’ll never get out of a 2-0 hole against this team, going back to Philly for 3 games. This is a must win.

TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Teix!!!!!!!!!!!

Slump? What slump?

Double yuck! Ready to barf!

Strike on Gameday!

Strike on Gameday again!

Right result but three extra pitches!

Should Girardi move Damon down the order? I think he should at least consider it. Damon seems to have hit a quadrilion popups with runners in scoring position.

Gone to Sterling and the radio. I’ll only use TV for replays. Buck and McCarver take all the joy out of a telecast.

Once again, the great cooler, A-Fraud, he of the Primobolan and Testosterone showing how many Zeroes $275 million can buy.

Godzilla comes through.

Japanese fishing!!!

AJ at 97, Pedro at 99!

Wish it was already Mo time!

A. J. Vu!

Getting stronger?

Once again, the great cooler, A-Fraud, he of the Primobolan and Testosterone showing how many Zeroes $275 million can buy.

A-Fraud finally contributes to some offense in the WS, waving at a Matt Stairs ground ball to put Philly up 1-0.

Jeter bunted on 2 strikes??????

Oh come on. The ump was right there. That ball hit the ground.

Two bad! Hope it’s not too bad!

when the F#%&K is baseball gonna get with the times and put in instant replay?!?!??! who knows, those 2 outs might affect the game!!

Break some bats!!!

hey what do ya know the real a-rod is back….welcome back chocker!!

hey a-rod…where have you been? welcome back chock artist

Talking about a seeing eye hit.

Three to go!

Compensation!

Not the HBP!

Please, not Aceves! That would be a disaster. Do we want to throw this game away? Tell me it isn’t so! Another bad call by an umpire. These series have been full of bad calls at critical times in the game. Can Mo get three more out in the 9th so at least go to Philly tied?

Strike on Gameday!

That tie. That tie just isn’t working Bryan….series tied=)

Strike on Gameday!

The guy carries the team into the world series, and after two games he gets the chocker treatment again. Ah well, he’s got Kate Hudson to cheer him up, sure would work for me.

That tie. That tie just isn’t working Bryan….series tied=)

So anyway, Yankees go into game 3 favorites in my opinion, with Pettite vs. Hamels. Yankees obviously need to win one in Philly, but I expect they will take two. Sabathia has to come back for game 4, and hopefully outduel Lee or Happ.

Mo magic!

Take one win and REPEAT THREE TIMES!!!

Could be Blanton for game 4!

BEST closer in the game bar NONE, with due respect to Trevor Hoffman. NO one I’d want in the 9th inning more then the GREAT Rivera. 1st ballot H of F.

Baseball NEEDS instant replay in the playoffs. Time to join the 21st century folks. This game is way tooooooo fast for any umpire.

Indeed, Blanton is another option for Charlie Manuel.

The pen is weak it will be of essence to get to quick posting three Phily home games. I think Pedro has a personal with Jeet. I stray from being pessimistic but yesterays loss seemed crucial. Still no big offense from both teams seems to be a New Yoek advantage. The faith of the east rest on the arm of Moe-Daisy

Rivera is epic. Though I would prefer Rivera be used only for 1 inning in games 3 and 4. Only bring him in for 2 if he didn’t pitch the night before and the Yanks have a day off the next day.

Everyone aside from Bud Selig seems to support a instant replay system, to some extent. I think you give each manager 3 challenges, and if he challenges wrong you take one away from him. It won’t slow down the game too much, unless the umpires are making a ton of bad calls in which case who is going to complain?

Won’t ever happen though, umpires don’t like to be proven wrong and Selig doesn’t seem to realise the rest of us actually have access to instant replay.

Fair Dinkum ( Australian translation ” Are you for real ) does Mariano get his blood drained from his veins and replaced by ice before getting to the mound. I have never in my 50 odd years seen anyone so composed and cool as what he showed after getting the double play ground ball to end the eighth. There was not the slightest show of emotion as he left the field, bloody unbelievable.

FOX’s baseball coverage is the same unfair and unbalanced coverage they give to the regular news.
Ozzie Guillen and Eric Karros are pathetic, with Guillen rooting for Pedro the other night. Joe Buck continually harps on the “O’fers” at each at bat–wow, some insight. At least McCarver, when he’s sober, (which he wasn’t that first divisional plaoff game) is credible.

And though I switch to MLB.com as soon as I can after the game , they aren’t much better. The ‘highlights’ of last night’s game mention ARod’s 3 strikeouts–no mention of Ryan Howard’s 4 strikeouts though. And they are picking apart Girardi’s moves, even though it’s Charlie Manuel’s team that lost the game!!

It’s one thing for Yankee fans to get on their team, quite another when these jokers start piling on. The media and the Phillies have their own shortcomings that are painfully obvious.

Interesting note I picked up from LoHud. Cliff Lee has never pitched on three days rest in his career!

I’m glad the Yankees proved me wrong when I predicted they’d get swept. How pathetic is their bullpen that Rivera has to pitch 2 innings? Cashman better overhaul the pen in the off season. Some of you trash Molina for his lack of production @ the plate. I’d say he’s equal to JoPo. I’d rather have Molina catch because he can throw runners out. Swisher or Hariston Jr? We all knew this bench is weak. It doesn’t really matter who bats where Damon 2 or 8. The linup is pretty weak after A-Roid.
