World Series Game 1: Yankees vs. Phillies

Here at Yankee Stadium, the Yankees and Phillies are getting ready for action on a cool and finally clear night. The theme to this World Series, baseball’s 105th, is obvious from the Bronx perspective — several times already tonight, the big screen in center field has flashed, “Win It For The Boss.” It’s no secret that George Steinbrenner’s health has not been excellent in recent years and the sense is that it would mean a great deal for the Bombers to be able to present him with at least one more championship trophy.

The Game 1 lineups as Joe Girardi’s Yankees begin the final stage of their quest for championship No. 27 at Yankee Stadium:

PHILLIES

Jimmy Rollins SS
Shane Victorino CF
Chase Utley 2B
Ryan Howard 1B
Jayson Werth RF
Raul Ibanez DH
Ben Francisco LF
Pedro Feliz 3B
Carlos Ruiz C

Pitching: LHP Cliff Lee (2-0, 0.74 ERA in postseason)

YANKEES
Derek Jeter SS
Johnny Damon LF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jorge Posada C
Hideki Matsui DH
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Melky Cabrera CF

Pitching: LHP CC Sabathia (3-0, 1.19 ERA in postseason)

Henry Rollins was wrong. The Phils aren’t going to win in 5, they’re going to win in 4. You could tell the Yankees were going to lose game 1 by the 1st inning. Phils load bases but didn’t score. How do the Yanks respond…Jeter out on 3 pitches, Damon bunts back to the pitcher, & Tex does what he does; strikes out. A-Roid back to his normal playoff self. Matsui didn’t show up to the park. The list goes on. Let’s enjoy the pennant folks because this thing is over.

Buck and McCarver are awful, so accept it. Cliff Lee’s curveball was breaking 3 feet and was pitching with great confidence. Tough night for Yankee players and fans. Reload tonight, take Pedro deep in counts because the Phillies bullpen is terrible, and hope AJ has his good stuff.

Like

They should pull Swisher (and I hate saying that since I love the guy) and put Gardner in for the game against Pedro. He throws a lot of off-speed stuff and therefore a speedster on the basepath could really get something done. Pedro is not as strong as Lee and Hamils is a lame duck so we shouldn’t worry too much. Like Jeter says, we must forget what is behind us and put our focus on what is next.

As for McCarver and Buck being anti-Yankee – I believe they were just in awe over Lee’s performance – how could yu not be, for better or for worse. And anyway, in McCarver’s defense – he did play for the Phillies after all – so it makes sense that is who he is rooting for.

Now let’s take down Pedro and get on with this thing.

Are Joe Buck and Tim McCarver Yankee haters or what? I thought that Buck and McCarver could not be worse and more biased against the Yankees than what I watched during the 2009 ALCS, but they hit an all time low tonight during game 1 of the WS, especially McCarver. These ignorant announcers salivated all over Lee, who deserves recognition, but … Read Morecertainly not favoritsm one way or the other by “neutral” broadcasters. I wish FOX Sports would read this stuff and get rid of these two biased and washed up broadcasters!

remy I think it goes beyond a mental thing. Every year that Hughes pitches he shows minimum progress. As I have said many times on this blog I am not sold on this guy. I just think he is average pitcher who as far as I am concerned has developed as far as he is going to. I am not sure that Hughes or Joba’s work ethic and approach to the game is anything special. If I were in management’s shoes I think I would reached the end of my rope with both of them.

Did you guys know Robertson makes just above league min.?

I know. I love Phil but Kids been fat…….but Joba hasn’t been Joba. There really is no option but for Phil to fix himself. I really think it’s a mental thing. It looks as if he’s rushing and forcing the ball. He’s also not emotionally stable, I mean yelling at the home plate ump after you walked men on base. I ope Howard stays cold that will be key and Alex hasn’t run out of gas.

Here’s a great stat for you, in October Phil Hughes has face 27 batters and retired only 14 of them. I wonder if that makes it into our manager’s book?

This game would have been a stellar win Clifford was untouchable. I think the only saving grace is Hamels must have a glitch. He’s been completely off, If the NL Dodgers could touch him the Yanks should kill him. They need to take Pedro out early and put some fear into that weak Phily bullpen. I’m leaning to take Swish out aswell even though you can’t blame him for not hitting Lee……sure Hinske/Gardener arn’t statistically better but it always seems that the unexpected make the difference this time of year. Robertson still the man and seems the only dependable under pressure…tufff loss

Girardi’s biggest problem is that his offense has gone south except for a couple of players. This offense is not built to manufacture runs and it better figure out how to do that in gaem 2.

Like

I’d expect nothing less from Girardi. Keep bringing in Hughes and Bruney Joe and see where it will get you. Don’t know about the rest of you but I expected more from Game 1 from this team.

funny how brainless says he’s not “concerned”……WELL A$$HOLE YOU BETTER GET CONCERNED PRETTY F#%#^^#ING QUICK!!! MENTAL MIDGET

Finish on a strike out. Why not? It’s been the way all night. We’ll hear all the blah blah after the game from management and players trying to make excuses and saying “Don’t worry. The Yankees will come back etc. etc. I’m really concerned having given up the first game in yankees stadium where we’ve won so often during the season and post season. Good night! There’s got to be a big turnaround before the next game or we’re in trouble.

Like

ARod has struck out three times. Tex has struck out twice. Lee is making our best hitters look pretty mediocre.

Like

HUmiliating tonight! The Yankees bull pen has not got the job done. There has been no offence. Jeter is the only one hitting. I’m listening to Joe Buck and McCarver or whoever on Fox and they are certainly not pro Yankees. At least at Yankee stadium we could have announcers that are Yankee supporters. We have to listen to this for the whole series?

Like

We should have kept Abreu in RF and not dealt for Swisher, although initially Swisher was supposed to be our first baseman until we got Tex, then Swish became an outfielder. I realize we thought we had Nady in the outfield and that went astray with Nady’s season ending injury. I’m not sure Swish’s defence is much better than Hinske’s. I think I’d even try Gardner or Hairston in the outfield and at the plate than Swisher. Swish is a fun guy and he’s intense and all that, but he’s not producing at the plate. How long do you wait for him to start producing before you make a change?

I think Rollins was right. Phillies in 5. Even if they split the first two then it’s back to Philly for 3 and I can see Philly taking those three. And tomorrow we’ve got AJ who really hasn’t been all that consistent. He gave up 4 runs in the first inning in his last outing. Mariano Rivera has been our only consistent reliever in the post season. We had to go to him for two innings in the last game to win the game.

Like

The 1996 team was a better team than this one RobertG, FACT!!!

This game ended oneof5 when Hughes came in for Sabathia. Keep bringing him in Joe, keep bringing him in.

Like

Bob,
We did it in 1996 (down 0-2) so there is still plenty of hope. And you sure are on that Hinske bandwagon! But we wanted better defense in RF or we may have kept Abreu. Swish is reasonable defense, to me Hinske is not. But he will swing the bat in Philly!

My list includes every you pitcher in both leagues with 5 or less years of experience and each one is a better pitcher that FATBOY Hughes.

Then Girardi brings in Bruney who they left off the roster in the last series because he was pitching so poorly in relief before that and Girardi brings him into this game with a 4 run lead and he gives up three hits and now it’s 5-0. Stupid management decisions. Mind you, it’s not just the bull pen tonight. The offence has been totally silent. You can’t win a ball game without scoring a run

Like

Poor command of the facts RobertG? Tell what has Hughes done in the 3 years of service that merits keeping him? Where is this development? Let’s talk about his performance in the Angel series or his performance tonight? Of Course your Excuse is youth and yet again there are plenty of pitchers his age and younger that have worked harder then FATBOY Hughes and developed. Stop making EXCUSES for this guy. And yankeepride Santana was legitimately hurt this year. He is ten times the pitcher either Hughes or Joba, our two Primadonnas, will EVER be.

Like

See, more support of Hughes!!!

Like

Robert, sorry but I know you’re trying to be positive and defend what’s happening tonight but it’s going to be tough down 1-0 and then have to play 3 games in Philly. I don’t like the Yankees chances on that basis. You can’t pitch CC every game and even tonight CC wasn’t enough. Why does Girardi keep playing Swisher? Does Swish have something on him or what? Good in the club house doesn’t translate into hits at the plate and he’s been terrible in the post season. What have you got to lose to give Hinske a shot. He has had world series experience.

I’d say this year’s team is more comparable to the 2003 team… which also lost the first game of the WS and ended up losing in 6 games. Hopefully that won’t happen this year (unless Lee pitches 3 times)

Like

They’re also better at catcher and with the top 2 starters this year. There’s no way the 96 team is better than this team.

Whoa! The 96 team was better than this years team? That team only won 92 games. They won 103 this year. They have better players and 1st, 3rd, 2nd, LF, and DH.

Great. Walk the only 2 batters you face. The Yankees need Hughes to get his head straight, but he’ll only do that by pitching. In the World Series, you don’t get too many chances to send a pitcher out there to get some work.

This is a dominate performance by Cliff Lee. The top of the 7th was an absolute pitching clinic. yeah RobertG the ’96 Yankees overcame a 0-2 deficit vs. the Braves. However, I am not sure this team has the same offense as that team. Again except for the 10-1 game vs. the Angels this team collectively is NOT hitting.

Like

This isn’t looking good.

To Robert’s point though, when you look at the matchups losing tonight isn’t the end of the world. Burnett has the edge on Pedro I think, and the way Hamels has been pitching Pettite has the edge on him as well. Still, would be nice to take Game 1

Like

Here Robertson is!!!

Like

THe botom of the 7th is the defining moment. If the yanks can score, and bring in the Philly bullpen to start the 8th then they have a good shot. Otherwise, Lee will come back out for the 8th, and he might pitch the 9th as well. Yankees must score, and run up the count as well.

Like

Losing Game 1 at home has been overcome before!

with such a low pitch count Lee could end up pitching the whole game unless the Yankees can start hitting him. What lousy weather for world series baseball. They used to play the world series in early October. With all the extra post season games they’re now playing into November. Great if the world series is in Dallas or Florida or California but not in the northeast U.S. And now we have two teams in the same area and probably the same kind of weather for the whole series. It’s too bad for players and fans. You don’t see your best base ball.

Why would CC throw the same pitch to Utley with 2 strikes like he did on his first home run? Almost exactly the same pitch. CC is pitching well but those two home runs could come back to bite him especially the way the yankees have been hitting up to this point. Tex is his useless self as is most of the lineup except Jeter who has got two hits and left stranded both times. They’ve got to get Lee out of the game to have a chance. He’s killing them. I have a feeling that the Phillies are going to take this one and we’re going to start the series in the hole.

86 pitches for Lee! We just need two in the wrong place!

Cliff Lee is making this Yankees’ offense look so bad. What is Damon doing? What has Tex been doing? CC has pitched a pretty solid game thus far, 2 runs is nothing to fret about. After that nonchalant catch Lee just made from a pop-up off of Damon’s almost non-existent bat, the Yankees should take that personal or something, and get fired up…

This offense NEEDS to start HITTING, collectively. Except for the 10-1 game in LA this Offense has been dormant. Wake the *UCK up and take pitches and start hitting. It the Yankee offense does NOT wakeup this series will look like the early 60′s series vs. LA.

Like

How do you throw anywhere near the plate in that count? Much less a meatball. Ah well, I do hope the Yanks get mething going here in the 6th. If they don’t, they’ll get something going in the 7th. This team is too talented not to make a run at Lee, however good he is pitching.

Man, the Yankees are looking bad at the plate tonight. Lee’s got nasty stuff and the yankees are swinging at some bad pitches. If they don’t find a way to hit Lee then they’re probably only going to have an inning or two at the end of the game before the closer comes in to try to get a few runs across. You’d hate for them to lose the first game of the series. Could make it tough going into Philly for three games. I think CC had too many days rest. He looked a little rusty in the first couple of innings. Back in the groove again but the Yankees are going to have to figure Lee out soon.

The same old lineup and the same old order for the yankees. I hope that if Swisher is not getting it done at the plate that they’ll give Hinske a chance and won’t wait to make a change. Swish had his chance in the series with the Angels and at the plate was hopeless. He made a few good plays in the field but we need someone at the plate that can get men home that are in scoring position. It will be interesting to see how the yankees match up with the Phillies. Lee is going to be tough. I would expect CC to have his usual post season lights-out game. But we’ll need some runs. Tex certainly needs to get it going. I hope they don’t keep pitching around ARod in this series. That knocks his bat out of the lineup. If they do, the Yankees need to pitch around Howard. Let’s play ball!! And Let’s go Yankees!!
