Jorge Posada will not catch A.J. Burnett

Jorge Posada has been told that he will not be catching when A.J. Burnett starts for the Yankees in either Game 2 or Game 3 of the American League Division Series. Posada said he was pulled aside by manager Joe Girardi on Sunday with the decision.

“It’s not like I didn’t see it coming,” Posada said.

Molina has caught Burnett’s last six starts, and he has fared 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA over that span. Posada last received Burnett on Sept. 1 at Baltimore, when the right-hander allowed six runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings, taking a no-decision in New York’s 9-6 victory.

Asked what pitchers like Burnett like about throwing to him, Molina quipped, “Big target?”

“I really have no idea,” Molina said. “I just call the game the way the reports say, what hitters like to do. Plus I like to talk to the pitchers a lot. Maybe that’s what they like.”

Opponents are hitting .221 off Burnett with Molina behind the plate, compared to .270 with Posada back there. Posada said that he does not know if he’ll play in that game at all, saying, “[Hideki] Matsui’s our DH,” and he did not seem pleased with the decision.

“I just hope we win that game,” Posada said. “That’s all I have to say.”

Burnett needs to GROW UP and pitch to Posada. Posada is the Yankees catcher.

Posada is the YANKEES catcher and a TRUE YANKEE LEADER. AJ Burnett MUST realize he has to pitch to Posada for the sake of the team and fans. Girardi, as the Yankee Manager MUST realize pitchers MUST pitch to Posada, they don’t get to pick their personal catcher.

The Yankees need Posada in the lineup in every game. A.J. Burnett has to realize he is a Major League Pitcher and MUST pitch to Posada for the sake of the team. True, Molina is a good fielding catcher, but he does not offer the offensive abilities Posada does, as well as Posada’s leadership abilities. Girardi should realize this if he wants to be a true Yankee Manager.

Course Posada isn’t happy, no big leaguer wants to sit come the postseason. Thing is, when you look at the splits, Girardi made the right call. Burnett needs to be a on top of his game to give the Yankees the edge the dominant no.2 starters that so many remaining teams do have. Posada should still get 1 or 2 at bats later in the game.

I think Jose has a slight edge throwing over Jorge and both CC and Andy hold runners on better than AJ. This won’t matter much for the Tigers and Twins but could be a big factor for the Angels if we face them!
