9/22 – Yankees at Angels

If at first you don’t succeed … and the second time you don’t either
… try to clinch a playoff spot on Tuesday against the Angels. That’s
what the Yankees will do tonight, needing either a victory or a Rangers
loss to secure their 14th postseason berth in 15 seasons.

This
is a postseason audition for Chad Gaudin, who is trying to prove he
belongs on the roster after game No. 162. It’s also an opportunity for
the Yankees to try and get out of their own way after losing six of
their last 10 games. A win tonight still puts them in position to
finish the trip on a positive note with a series victory, something
that hasn’t happened all that often.

But they’ve got to get that win first, so we might be getting ahead of ourselves.

Great 9th inning for the team. Great bunt on a 1-2 count by Damon. A-Rod SF is the way you play the game. Bottom of the 9th the cutter and throw him out Jorge. All in all a HUGE win, but if this is what October is going to be like I am not sure my heart is going to be able to take it.

In my opinion, Mr. Girardi left Aceves in too long. When he got the first 2 guys on base, he should’ve been pulled right there. He obviously was tiring or something, so a fresh arm should’ve been brought in. Instead, Mr. Girardi left him in, to get the bases loaded, then to walk in a run…

Why the *ELL did you bring in this bum Marte? Right to get out the lefty who promptly doubled. Can anyone pitch middle relief on this team?

Tell you what ol hickory, with all respect to CC, if I had a Cy Young vote I’d have to consider Zach Greinke. This guy is amazing with a so-so ballclub. As for the Yankee game tonite, nothing comes easy for them in LA, does it?

Are the Yankees seriously considering letting Matsui walk and replacing him with no one? How do you replace someone with the essentially the stats in the same at bats as Arod with no one? How do you replace someone who bats above league average, hits 28 HR and counting, and is a clutch hitter? You don’t just to give the other guys an occasional day off.

Win this game or the next and the Yanks have a shot at wrapping up this division against Boston. Gaudin is sure pitching like a guy who wants the ball in October. I don’t know about leaving Joba out of the postseason roster though, even if he is half of the reliever he was in 08, he would be a huge upgrade over whoever else our 4th best reliever is now (behind Rivera, Hughes and Aceves). I get why Cashman doesn’t want to mess with his head by putting him back in the pen, but I’m sure if you offered him the choice of bullpen or going home he’d jump at the chance to pitch.
