9/1 – Yankees at Orioles

Hello from Oriole Park at Camden Yards on another unseasonably cool evening in the Inner Harbor, as A.J. Burnett and David Hernandez get set to go at it.

The Yankees made five moves before today’s game, calling up C Francisco Cervelli, LHP Michael Dunn, RHP Mark Melancon, IF Ramiro Pena and RHP Edwar Ramirez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. There could be more on the way when the Minor League season comes to an end, but Joe Girardi said he doesn’t want to have players taking up space on the bench if they aren’t going to play.

As expected, the Yankees aren’t taking any chances with RHP Sergio Mitre (right forearm) and will start RHP Chad Gaudin on Thursday at Toronto instead. The thinking is that, coming off Tommy John surgery, they don’t want Mitre to do anything that might set him back again.

Just a day off for Hideki Matsui as the Yankees continue to try and rest their players whenever possible. Brett Gardner took BP on the field here today and will do so again tomorrow. If everything goes well, he could be shipped out for a rehab assignment on Thursday.

We’ve gone from having a solid rotation to a HUGE question mark. CC and Andy are pitching well. After that AJ can’t be depended on for a quality start and has needed pickup for his last several. Joba isn’t pitching poorly but I REALLY believe he is suffering from all the jerking around he’s been getting. Far from “protecting” him, I think they may be ruining him! After that, Mitre had a good outing last time against the WSox but that’s about it. We’ll see how Gaudin does. What’s Wang’s status? Are we going to be looking at IPKei for a start or two down the stretch??

“There was a stretch back when when the Yankees were playing awful ball and the bull pen stunk. They deserved to be criticized given their payroll. They’re hot now and hopefully will remain so up to the World Series.”

And if they don’t reach the promised land, oneof5, there will be more than 10 times the 3 or 4 posts you regularly see on here of late. I guess to some it isn’t worth posting here when the Yanks are winning. But we’ve already covered that before.

Anyway, to reach 100 they now gotta win 16 of the remaining 30 games. I’m looking forward to that, indeed.

it’s real simple aj pitches with no conviction he’s following in the foot steps of his mentor (halladay) i’m cool with wanting to throw the breaking ball & change up but when he’s ahead in the count tell me why he cisan’t reach back & throw his famous 98mph put the batter to bed josh beckett or justin verlander but no he wants to become a painter trust this his wild pitches & walking will cost the yankees big time if he doesn’t get it together with joba rules in effect with joba barely reaching 93mph with his fastball on the radar gun now we have 3 andy petite on the mound in stead of 3 power pitchers we only have one in cc and we all know that isn’t going to cut it in the playoffs against the angels redsox or tigers

We escaped with Marte in. Now Girardi brings in Robertson who also has not pitched well out of the bullpen. Why does he keep flirting with danger bringing these guys in. They just brought Melancon up. He’d be a better choice I think, or Aceves or Hughes. These guys should be able to pitch an inning every game.

If this holds up Marte gets the win. A.J. is in his street clothes by now and out of the stadium.

Back to back bombs, that is quite a feat. Still nervous about Burnett in general though

Miss Todd E. and his raunchy, controversial, humorous comments. Where are you gone buddy? Need someone to spice up the blog even though they can be negative sometimes. There was a stretch back when when the Yankees were playing awful ball and the bull pen stunk. They deserved to be criticized given their payroll. They’re hot now and hopefully will remain so up to the World Series.

Lazy playing is contagious. I love Tex, but he should have left his feet on that one. Burnout will get a no decision again.

Like

Injury delay. What’s that? Did AJ get injured? No, not Marte. He was hopeless before he was sent down. He’d better be a lot better than he was before he went back to the minors. We need every game right now down the stretch. The Sox are beating Tampa Bay. We can’t afford to give a game away. A 6 1/2 lead is not insurmountable and the Sox have the team that can do it.

Like

Don’t tell me Girardi has left AJ in for another inning. He’s only around 100 pitches but the way he’s been pitching tonight that’s too many. We can’t afford to give any more runs and keep trying to catch up.

Like

Burnout is back in? Are you kidding me?

Like

Too many runners left in scoring position tonight and not brought in. Runners on 2nd and 3rd and Posada strikes out. He’s been big tonight on previous at bats but needs to at least get a single to bring in another couple of runs. Clutch hits are important to win. Who comes in now to pitch out of the bull pen will make the difference as to whether the yankees can pull this one out.

Like

Looks like Burnett was left in one inning too long. This is not vintage Burnett by any means and against a last place club. Perhaps Girardi needs to look at another starter. Maybe Aceves or Hughes or Melancon. How long do we wait for Burnett to get into form? Is it his mechanics? Was last year a fluke? Is pitching in the Big Apple getting to him? Is he not comfortable on the big stage? He Needs to get his act together soon or he needs to be replaced down the stretch.

Like

Watching AJ struggle once again against a lineup considerably weaker than the ones he will face in the postseason, I’m wondering if he will figure it out in the few regular starts he has left. CC struggled on both his last trips to the playoffs, and while that may be a product of short rest and small sample size, should Burnett not find form this puts a lot of pressure on Andy Pettite to roll back the years and be the October ace once again.

Like

That’s “leading the league.”

Like

I’m finished with Burnett. He’s one of these high priced pitchers who can’t handle NY. He starts tonight leading the lead in walks. We paid how much for a starter with a whip of 1.38? Arguing with Posada about calls, and now not covering first base on a grounder. What did the Boss call Irabu when he didn’t cover? “A fat toad.” What next for A.J. Burnout?

Like

AJ has been a disappointment in his last few starts. He gives up the long ball too often. He has been inconsistent to say the least this year. He should be better than he is given his record last year with the Blue Jays and the money he is being paid. Hopefully he’ll come through when the chips are down in the playoffs. Hopefully he can pitch into the 7th inning tonight before he gives way to the bull pen. It all depends on who Girardi brings in.

Like

Who is the impostor on the mound?? I hope the bull pen is ready, For It appears that AJ was not ready. Maybe he should be on an 8 day schedule…..3 runs 7 hits 2 walks only 1 K in 3 innings, He just doesn’t have it… … Bring Ace in!
