Pitching: Brett Tomko (1-2, 5.23)

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE: Isn’t it funny that Brett Tomko can resurface as a starting pitcher exactly as the Yankees open a three-game series against the A’s, having departed saying how he was happy to be leaving because it never seemed like he got a chance in New York? Well, now he gets his opportunity here to pull off an upset. Said Joe Girardi: “We know Brett and Brett knows us.” …

With Hideki Matsui out until at least tomorrow after having his left knee drained, Derek Jeter got to jump in the lineup as the designated hitter. Good timing, considering his nearly unpublicized pursuit of Luis Aparicio’s record for hits as a shortstop concluded Sunday. …

The Yankees are anxious to see how Matsui responds to treatment and Girardi said he will not use him at all on Monday. …

A couple of other small items — the name Russ Ortiz did come up briefly in discussions about helping the big league team, but never seriously. Ortiz elected free agency from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in hopes of latching on with a playoff contender that would call him up. Brett Gardner is set to see a doctor on Wednesday about his left thumb and wouldn’t rejoin the big league team until September.

I ask myself the same thing. How is it that players struggle in New York to the point that they are released or DFA and when they meet us in a series with some other team they make a lights out performance. Same thing happened las year with J. Karstens after he went to the Pirates.
On the other hand I keep hearing about A-Rod and the need for off days to rest his repaired hip but lately he is swinging awfully and he seems to have difficulty making plays that were piece of cake for him. The entire offence seems powerfull one day and the next couple of days they strugle to produce runs. I don’t get it!!! Hopefully wi’ll do fine today and 2morrow and get at least 2 out of 3 in Boston.
Go Yanks for 27 ***************************

When is ARod going to show up? He looks really weak on a lot of his at bats, swinging under the ball, over the ball, striking out, grounding out, hitting pops. With all the money this guy is being paid he’s not producing this year. Is he distracted by Kate Hudson? Is that where is his energy and focus is going? Is he injured? Is his mechanics off? What’s going on? He needs to get it together and soon!! I’m concerned if the yankees lose this series to the As they are going into Boston with no momentum and flat and will get clobbered again. They won the series in New York but in Boston it has been a different matter. That 7 game gap can get eaten up in a hurry especially if they lose this series and get swept in Boston. The top of the lineup has to really produce for this team to win consistently. Getting Matsui back will be a bonus the way he’s been hitting lately. Tomko stones the yankees and for some reason he bombed out in New York? Why? Do we not know how to develop and use our young talent? Are they too much in the spotlight in New York and can’t handle it?

So the Yankees DFA’d Tomko and now he starts against them, and pitches 5 SCORELESS innings?!?! What is wrong with that picture? Where has the Yankees’ offense been the past 2 games? Hopefully they can turn it around over the past 3 innings…
