Winging it to the West

Cano.jpgHello from Newark International Airport, as the Yankees have already landed in Seattle and are preparing to open a four-game series against the Mariners at Safeco Field tonight.

They flew to the West Coast last night after Robinson Cano’s walk-off single gave them their 11th such victory of the season, completing a homestand that saw them go 6-1 against the Red Sox and Blue Jays.

Will that success continue away from home? This is a big trip for the Bombers, this 10-game, 11-day swing to Seattle, Oakland and Boston, and the longest one of the remaining schedule.

As Anthony DiComo wrote yesterday, the Yankees have been remarkably average on the road while seeming to find a real advantage at Yankee Stadium. They’re tired of it, and having a strong trek could help them keep a seal on the AL East — the lead standing at 5 1/2 games entering play today.

CC Sabathia has the ball tonight for New York against Seattle’s Ian Snell, a pitcher the Yankees showed some level of interest in acquiring from the Pirates last month. Here are the other matchups for the weekend:

• Friday: Yankees (Andy Pettitte, 9-6, 4.14) at Mariners (Ryan Rowland-Smith, 2-1, 3.86), 10:10 p.m. ET
• Saturday: Yankees (Sergio Mitre, 1-1, 7.04) at Mariners (Lucas French, 2-2, 4.31), 10:10 p.m. ET
• Sunday: Yankees (Chad Gaudin, 5-10, 5.03) at Mariners (Doug Fister, 0-0, 0.00), 4:10 p.m. ET

Matsui is having a career night in the Emerald City, 2 HRS and 5 rbis. 11-1 right now in the 8th, great way to start a road trip. With the sox in Texas the Yankees can put more distance between themselves & the sox.

With the lineup of pitchers, Andy, Mitre and Gaudin, going against Seattle, I’m hoping we can come away with at least 2 wins. Gaudin is still an unknown factor, The other 2 have been inconsistent. If Andy can pitch another strong game we may be to slug our way through the series. We need a strong road trip.
Are Jete, Rodi and going to be heathy? How about Rivera will be strong enough for tomorrows game?
Boston lost up to a 6 game lead….. GO YANKEES!

Pardon my ignorance but since when is playing over .500 on the road considered “remarkably average”? In all of the AL only the Angels are better on the road than the Yankees. The remaining 12 teams all have losing records away from home.
