8/10 – Yankees vs. Blue Jays

How do you avoid a letdown coming off the thrilling four-game sweep of the Red Sox over the weekend? The Yankees are certainly going to try here tonight, though it’s hard to manufacture the same buzz that the Boston-New York rivalry produces.

That doesn’t make the games any less important, even as Joe Girardi offers Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui a day off here tonight and plans to find more rest for his big guns in the Toronto series before the Bombers hit the road for a 11-day, 10-game trip to Seattle, Oakland and Boston.

Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi called a press conference shortly after 6 p.m. ET tonight to announce that they have accepted a waiver claim from the White Sox for outfielder Alex Rios. The revised Toronto lineup follows:

tor.gifBLUE JAYS (53-57)
Scutaro SS
Hill 2B
Lind DH
Overbay 1B
Wells CF
Bautista RF
Encarnacion 3B
Barajas C
Inglett LF

Pitching: Marc Rzepcynski (1-3, 3.74)

YANKEES (69-42)

Jeter SS
Swisher RF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Posada DH
Cano 2B
Hairston LF
Cabrera CF
Molina C

Pitching: Sergio Mitre (1-0, 7.50)

Going with the old-school Blue Jays logo tonight. I just think it’s a better logo. Why mess with what worked? Don’t forget, you can follow along tonight on Twitter @bryanhoch.

I have been a fan since 1956, and yes I’m a female. I have always loved the Yanks even through their rough years (80’s). Girardi has given Mitre two chances +, we can’t win with him on the mound and subjecting the bullpen to repeat these long stretches every time. Girardi kept giving Veras chances and finally the Yankees got rid of him and the bullpen is better. We definetely need another starter, lets rotate the AAA pitchers til we find one. One of them has got to better than Mitre. He needs more work and confidence. He is not going to do it up in the BIGS. Maybe next year Cashman will go after Halliday for the fifth starter. LOL

There must be a valid reason for continuing to Pitch Mitre. But after a very hard earned and exhausting win over the Red Sox it must be a let down to the team to know they have to play perfect defense and score at least six runs or more when he pitches. Is this a test??

I’m assuming the patience shown w/Mitre has to do w/his being out of baseball for a year and a half due to Tommy John surgery. I’m not happy with the job he’s done but if not for his bad throw to Robbie, the Yankees in all likelihood win the game.
Don’t shoot me guys, but I’m gonna agree w/Girardi on this one, in so far as Mitre getting another start. But I completely understand how you guys feel: remember, I was the guy nearly having a heart attack over Girardi’s continuous use of Cody Ransom.

The Blue Jays didn’t snap the Yankees winning streak…Sergio Mitre did! He single handedly lost the game for the Yankees. It wasn’t like the Yankee bats didn’t show up, it wasn’t bad fielding (except for Mitre…again!). I’m sure Cano wants to beat him with a bat! How can Joe and Brian not see he is a complete liability! He can’t pitch and he is terrible in the field! How many more times does he have to hurt the Yankees before they get rid of him. He would be an asset to the Yankees…if they played against him. He doesn’t belong on a high caliber team like the Yankees. Trade him for a bat boy! If he would have pitched in the Boston series, they would for sure have lost that game. If the Yankees loose the division by a game, or two, or three, then we will know why….and not only can the entire Yankee fan base blame Mitre, but they can blame Joe and Brian…again.

Sincerely,

Mitre’s Mother

This loss is on Girardi. Not for resting his regulars but for being STUPID and starting Mitre again. Stop it Joe!!!!

Then it’s Gaudin, who cares anything is better than Mitre. He has been given 4 starts and has failed to make it to the 6th inning in any of them. Good way to kill your pen, Joe.

Swisher has struck out twice tonight and overthrew the cut off man. Why doesn’t Girardi platoon him with Hinske? Danger of a let down with a team like Toronto after sweeping the Sox. There’s not a lot of energy here tonight I Don’t sense. Also sitting Damon and Matsui means they have less power and offence in the line up. Hopefully they can get a couple of runs and squeek this one out.

Another 5 inning performance by this guy, for God sakes. Come on Girardi stop it, you have given this guy 4 starts and everytime he fails. Send this guy down and start someone else, you have options.

I agree with the sentiments expressed about Mitre. If the Yankees continue to go with him as the fifth starter we’re going to lose every fifth game. Now that we’re 5 1/2 ahead of the Sox we can’t afford to give away any games or we’ll be giving the Sox a chance to catch up, and the Rays are playing well lately. The Yankees didn’t trade for a fifth starter because they didn’t want to give up Austin Jackson or Phil Hughes. Maybe Josh Towers can start. At least give him a chance in place of Mitre. Anyway this patience thing with Mitre has run its course. It’s time to start someone else in his place the next time and move him to the bull pen or to AAA. Although we need to acknowledge that only three of the five runs were earned tonight with a couple of stupid errors by the Yankees. That doesn’t help either when you don’t get it done on the field.

Ship this guy out!!! Give someone else a chance to blow it!! I’d even give Kei Igawa a chance over this guy. There has to be someone better in the bullpen/minors.

This game just proves that Mitre can’t pitch, even to one of the weaker hitting teams! Get rid of him and give Gaudin a chance! We can’t expect our hitters to score 10 runs every time he pitches…

For Gods sake Girardi will you stop with the Sergio experiment? What part of this guy is a AAA pitcher aren’t you getting Girardi? How many leads is this guy going to blow B4 you figure it out Joe? Use Gaudin or anyone else Joe.
