SWEEPING SENSATION: Tonight, the Yankees will look for their ninth series sweep this season, second of four games (also 5/15-18 vs. Minnesota)…have swept five of their last 11 series…since 1950, the Yankees have swept Boston six times in series of four-or-more games, most recently from 8/18-21/06 in a five-game series at Fenway Park…will look to complete their third such sweep of the Red Sox at home since 1950 (also 4G – 8/16-19/85 and 5G – 9/28-30/51).
ONE-TWO PUNCH: In each of the last two games, Yankees starters RHP A.J. Burnett and LHP CC Sabathia each threw 7.2 shutout innings…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marks just the third time in franchise history that Yankees starting pitchers tossed at least 7.0 innings while allowing no runs and no more than two hits in back-to-back games…the feat was also accomplished on 5/23-24/47 vs. Boston (Allie Reynolds and Spud Chandler) and 4/11-12/73 vs. Cleveland (Mel Stottlemyre and Steve Kline).
BY THE NUMBERS: In the first three games of this series, the Yankees have outscored the Red Sox 20-6 and outhit them .300 (36-for-120) to .144 (16-for-111)…Yankees pitchers own a 1.64 ERA (33.0IP, 6ER) and have not allowed a run since the ninth inning on Thursday…Yankees hurlers have also not permitted an extra-base hit since Casey Kotchman’s home run in the fourth inning on Thursday -a 29.0-inning stretch.
NO RUNS FOR YOU: The Yankees have recorded consecutive shutouts for the first time since 6/15-17/08 (13-0 at Houston, 8-0 vs. San Diego)…have blanked the Red Sox in consecutive games for the first time since 8/27-28/02 at Fenway Park…the last time the Yankees blanked the Red Sox in consecutive home games in a single season was 8/27/63 in both games of a doubleheader.
