Yankees call up Towers; option Melancon

The Yankees have purchased the contract of RHP Josh Towers from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and optioned RHP Mark Melancon to Triple-A. LHP Damaso Marte was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

This is really just a complementary move to get some innings up after last night’s 15-inning marathon, but it’s a good opportunity to dredge this story up from the archive: Yanks, Jays empty benches twice. Wonder if Tony Pena will be waiting with open arms to welcome Towers into the Yankee clubhouse?

“I heard somebody chirping when I was talking to Lyle [Overbay],” Towers said. “I
asked who it was, and Tony Pena is running his mouth. I was like, ‘What
is this guy running his mouth for?’ He’s a quitter. He was managing a
team and he quit in the middle of a season, because he couldn’t hack
it. Hey, he’s going to run his mouth at me?”

Towers is an up and down pitcher but has shown he can work it in the big leagues. Anyway he’s maybe up for less than a week so we’ll wait before thinking letting him try a start in Mitre’s place but if he does good in the bullpen there’s maybe a chance but let’s stick to the fact that he’s up because he had to be put into the 40-man roster. With a winning team like we have, we call minor issues. The fifth spot in the rotation remains suspectable though but we only have minor leaguers set to it. The bullpen is so strong right now it can save anything so inh the situation it’s a big problem as Yanks are protecting against problems because we don’t really have major ones in the moment.

IT would be smarter to use Gaudin as the 5th starter, he’s the better pitcher of the two.

Towers is just another mediocre pitcher added to this roster, nothing to get excited about. Hopefully Mitre gets dumped like the trash he is just as Ransom did.

Towers was recently IL Pitcher Of The Week but has been used only as a starter. Does this push Mitre to the pen? Where does Gaudin settle in? Glad to see MLB experience counts!
