8/5 – Yankees at Blue Jays

The roof is open, the weather’s great, and that’s really all you need to know heading into tonight’s series finale between the Yanks and Jays. Well, and this:

The Yankees designated Cody Ransom for assignment prior to the game and promoted Anthony Claggett from Triple-A Scranton, in a move that most anticipated earlier this week. With the more versatile Jerry Hairston, Jr. on the roster now, it just didn’t make a whole lot of sense to keep Ransom around — and the Yankees can certainly use extra pitching heading into what’s sure to be a draining four-game series against the Red Sox. Yes, the Red Sox — pretty much all the pregame talk centered on those guys, despite the fact that there’s still a game to be played here in Canada. Should be an interesting weekend.

Hairston, by the way, is playing third base tonight, with A-Rod taking a DH day.

NOTES: A sad moment at the ballpark, when the Yanks learned that George Murray, one of the people the Yankees honored during their recent Hope Week, passed away yesterday at his home in South New Berlin, N.Y. Murray, who was told when he was diagnosed with ALS three years ago that he had three to five years to live, was 38. “I was shocked,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who was among those who surprised Murray in a suite last month at Yankee Stadium.

Anyone selling or know anyone who is selling tickets for tonight? Bryan, hook a brother up!

Let’s hope Ortiz has something left in the tank and will at least pitch better than he did at Houston. Right now I would take El Duque back. Again (beat a dead horse) this is what happens when your GM doesn’t address the needs of this club at the trade deadline.

32 hits in 18 innings… that’s AWFUL!

So Mitre has given the Yankees 18 innings in his 4 starts. He isn’t going 4.2 starts a game and his ERA is 7.50 after 4 starts. He is NOT the answer, and needs to either share the same fate as Cody Ransom and get DFA’d, shipped back down to AAA or at least moved to the bullpen. I honestly think that Kei Igawa would do a better job than Mitre right now (lol I know that hurts to say it/read it, but seriously). They need to figure that spot out soon.

From the “Get a Starter Off the Waiver Wire” File . . .the Yankees signed Russ Ortiz. Or as he used to be known, Sergio Mitre. Hey, I hear El Duque is available.

If you cannot get a starter off the waiver wire it’s time for Girardi to consider moving Hughes or Aceves to the starting rotation and getting another relief option.

There is No way the Yankees can continue to run a 5th starter out there and get less than 5 innings a game. Mitre will single handedly hurt this bullpen, especially later in September. This is why a good GM would have somehow gotten a 5th starter. I asked yesterday is anyone knew wheter or not Mark Prior had anything left. Get anyone Crashman!

It’s about time they DFA’d Cody Ransom, only took them 2 1/2 months TOO long…
