7/31 – Yankees at White Sox

Here we are, now that the deadline has passed, and the Yankees have made only minor moves — Jerry Hairston, Jr. will join the bench tomorrow as he flies in from Cincinnati, Shelley Duncan is here today and could be gone tomorrow as it sounds like they’ll keep Cody Ransom, and Jason Hirsh was added from the Rockies to serve as Triple-A depth.

It wasn’t that the Yankees didn’t look at other things, and their interest in Jarrod Washburn was real. But the price the Mariners were asking was prohibitive, as they reportedly were bringing up the names of Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and Jesus Montero to anchor packages. Brian Cashman wasn’t biting on anything like that.

“We were pretty far off on everything we were looking for,” Cashman said. “I certainly pursued a lot of pitching opportunities as well as other opportunities.”

They’ll keep looking in August, as there may be some waiver moves to be made. But Joe Girardi was a little more optimistic than Cashman sounded when I reached him on his cell phone shortly after 5 p.m. ET.

“Basically, we’re always interested in doing something that makes us better if it makes sense,” Cashman said. “Over the last month, we’ve been able to add Eric Hinske and Jerry Hairston to our bench because we feel that those were opportunities that made sense for us. To try to come up with something that makes sense for two different teams is hard to do. You keep exploring it, but realistically, you don’t expect it to happen.”

Are you kidding me with these guys? This is a nighmare and this CWS series is exhibit A as to why we are not going any where again and YES Girardi should get gone. A-Rod digusts me with his lack of hitting when we really need it. I don’t care what they say or the stats say. This is 220 millions dollars of fat cats that don’t even really seem to care. They look on Acevedes face said it all yesterday. He could have given a crap and was throwing lollipops up ther and said hit me please. I’m totally disgusted with this team. Oh, and by the way Posada is toast defensively, I love em’ but. If A-rod blows one more bubble after bouncing into a double play I’m going to puck. I’m over these guys.

This loss just showed that Mitre cannot pitch. If he pitches every 5th day, we will lose. And why didn’t Cashman get Bannister and why have the Royals pay 650K of his contract, I mean, since when 650K became so expensive for us??? Just shows that Cashman is really dumb. Now we are without a 5th starter.
As for Hairston, then I hope that the Yanks will DFA Ransom. Why have two utility fielders? Hairston is much better player and has more versatile. Why didn’t Cashman go for a solid starting pitcher instead of utility fielder? Doesn’t sound right at all…
We missed two good opportunities at this trade deadline… which are Bannister and Sherill (instead of Coke or Robertson)…

Bryan,
Certainly the most disturbing rumor, at least for me, is missing out on Brian Bannister because of $650.000. If you have a chance, please let us know the rest of the story!

wrd3990, the Yankees don’t need to go after Halladay for numerous reasons (mainly the prospects it would cost), but they definitely need another starter. Why they didn’t get Bannister is beyond me. They go out and trade for another utility player instead of a starter, which they needed a starter far more than they needed ANOTHER utility player. Ramiro Pena could’ve been called up to be the utility infielder, a role he did fairly well in earlier this season. He’s a superb defender and although he has about zero power, he’s nowhere near inept with the bat like Cody Ransom. The mere fact that the Yankees have let Sergio Mitre throw 1 mediocre start and 2 terrible starts without making any moves makes me laugh. They asked the Royals to pay the $650k left on Bannister’s contract for this year, really?!?! They were talking about a trade for Washburn, who is making $10.35mil this year opposed to Bannister’s $1.7mil. How much would they have asked the Mariners to put in? I never once thought Washburn would be a good move, not for the money or the prospects or anything it would’ve cost to get him. The correct move would’ve been to go out and get Bannister, a pitcher that would NOT have commanded Hughes, Joba, Montero, A. Jackson in return. Why even make a move for another utility player anyways? The Yankees trade for Hinske and he’s played in 7 games since he was acquired, and has 5 home runs (as well as played efficiently in the field). Why doesn’t Girardi use him more? Stupid moves…

Poor pitching management, poor management. Mediocrity won’t win a world series.

The lack on consistency in pitching is terrible. Girardi should have dumped Rob when he started putting runners on. These games are important and it was an opportunity to pull ahead of the redsux instead of only being 1.5 games ahead. Resting on their laurels? Of course the lousy roadtrip of the White Sox meant tough games in Chicago. But, the Yankees need PITCHERS not more utility men. The organization has all the money they need, go out and get Halliday or you won’t make it past the playoffs, if then. Whose in charge? I’m not seeing much creativity.

oneof5, I didn’t want to post on here at all tonight. I just got home from work and have stewed all night, talking to customers and fellow co-workers all night really got my blood going. I got an email alert from the Yankees saying Yankees make a deadline deal… Immediately I thought the Yankees pulled the trigger and got Brian Bannister (YESSS), much to my chagrin I open the email to see they traded for Jerry Hairston Jr. Nothing against Hairston, but really? Did the Yankees really need ANOTHER utility player? Granted he’s much better than Ransom (who isn’t?), but did the Yankees really need to make a move for another utility player? The most glaring need the Yankees had was in their starting rotation. If Mr. Cashman thinks that Sergio Mitre will fill the gap as the #5 starter for the rest of the year, then he is FAR DUMBER than I thought. This guy is a bum. I don’t care how highly touted of a prospect he was, he hasn’t done squat in the MLB. He has a career record of 11-23 and a career ERA of 5.47, PITCHING MOST OF HIS CAREER IN THE NATIONAL LEAGUE…. And Cashman thinks he can be a MLB starter, for the NEW YORK EFFING Y ANKEES NO LESS?!?!?! Brian Bannister’s career record is 29-33 with a career ERA of 4.57. This year Bannister is 6-7 with a 3.80 ERA, pitching in the AL. The Yankees wanted the Royals to pay the $650k left on this year’s contract (seriously? he’s under control for 2 more seasons), WOW. The Red Sox improved, the Tigers improved, the Twins improved, everyone but the Yankees improved. You’re right, they’ll sink with Mitre, 1-0 with a 7.91 ERA LOLOLOLOL. Keep Robertson and Ransom and Mitre on the roster (kept Veras and Tomko for too long) and the Yankees will definitely get to the World Series. Yet another blunder by the Yankees’ management team this season…

Well this game is over. Fact is I believe this game was over before it started. The Yankees sent out a has been AAA pitcher to face the white sox and he pitched like a AAA pitcher. I have said it once I’ll say it again this franchise will not win another WS crown until its IDIOT GM Brian Crashman is let go. This IDIOT GM has NO clue on how to put a team together. Today he FAILED again to address the needs of this club. This team did NOT need a utility infielder IDIOT it NEEDS a 5th starter. Don’t hit me the August waiver wire you IDIOT. The red sox can make a claim on any pitcher before the Yankees get him. Why not try Kennedy or Igawa (another one of your great signees) as the 5th starter? Anyone is better than Mitre. Yankee fans cannot blame Girardi for this one, it is the GM’s job to fill the holes and Crashman failed to get that 5th starter. IDIOT!!!

oneof5 I think most of them are out at the local watering hole drinking their night away after Crashman did not get another starter.

Where have all the long time and passionate bloggers on this site gone? (No reflection on the few of us commenting tonight) Everyone taking the night off? Too depressed after the Yankees failed to trade for another starter? Gone to anothe site? In Chicago at the game?

There is no way that this team makes it to post season without another starter. Many of us on this blog have been talking about this for months when it became apparently that Wang was not going to give the Yankees much this season. Instead of dealing with it our IDIOT GM gets a utility infielder. Crashman, Mitre gave them 3 innings tonite. This guy IS NOT a major league pitcher. Everyone sees that but you, the Yankees IDIOT GM. Once again the Curse of Brian Crashman haunts this team.

The Yankees offence has dried up since the first inning. Need to get this going soon or they could end up on the wrong end of the score. The Sox won tonight and so are the Rays. Yankees can’t afford to lose this series or they could find themselves behind the Sox chasing them again.

Like

If the Yankees are going to win tonight it will have to on offence. The pitching is terrible from both Mitre and Robertson. Neither of these guys should be in the majors. Why would Girardi follow Mitre with Robertson. Is that all he’s got? Man, this could be a long night.

Unfortunately up here in Toronto we have to listen to White Sox commentators tonight. No Kay and no Singleton. I hate it. They talk up the White Sox obviously and get all excited when they hit or score runs but are rather casual when commenting about anything the Yankees do. Very bias commentating but I guess that’s what you can expect. I should turn down the sound and just watch the game on TV

I’ve been calling for Hinske to play ever since we traded for him. I saw what pop he had in his bat here in Toronto with the Jays and he’s not a bad 3rd baseman and 1st baseman. A little limited in outfield because he’s not fast and doesn’t have a great arm. Hopefully Girardi will play him more. He’s a clutch hitter. Now Girardi has to get a pitcher in there who will hold off the White Sox hitters. Mitre can’t do it.

Like

Yankees look really weak playing against good hitting teams like the white Sox and Red Sox and Angels. They’re nervous in the field and make stupid mistakes. They don’t get clutch hits. Our pitchers get clobbered. If we can’t beat these teams we’ll never make it to the World Series.

Like

Well, Hinske is certainly making his case of why he should play more often…5 HRs in 7 games as a Yankee…

Homer from Quentin, 5-3 in the third. Watching Mitre is simply painful. This guy does not deserve to be in the Majors -not even with the Nationals! But Cashman thinks he belongs in pinstripes…Wait a minute, I remember: Cashman said he expected August waivers to be very busy…Maybe, with some luck, Cashman will manage to get Sydney Ponson back…

Like

Can you believe this? The Yankees didn’t trade for another starter and are going to live and die with Mitre. Sorry, but they’re going to die with him. Bases loaded both innings, no outs. He’s getting hit all over the place. The Yankees aren’t going to make it down the stretch with Mitre as #5 starter. Cashman has got to do something. They’re going to have to start Hughes and put Mitre in the bull pen. He’s the only reliable pitcher they have that can give them multiple innings. Then Girardi is warming up Robertson who has been useless. Looks like this is shaping up for another loss and if Boston wins tonight we’re looking at only 1 and 1/2 games after tonight. This series could be a disaster.
