On to the second half!

The unofficial second half of the season begins tonight for the Yankees, as they return from the All-Star Break and open up their homestand against the Detroit Tigers.

All things considered, the Yankees should be feeling pretty good about where they are, especially if they were able to erase all thoughts of the three-game sweep against the Angels.

Despite absence and ineffectiveness from Chien-Ming Wang, the same for projected eighth-inning men Brian Bruney and Damaso Marte, the streakiness of Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez, and problems from Andy Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain (need we go on?) … the Yankees still enter play tonight at 51-37, three games behind the Red Sox in the American League East and leading the Wild Card chase.

Yes, if the season ended today, the Yankees would be in the playoffs — which may be new information to some of the people who proclaim the sky is falling on a daily basis. That’s the good news. The bad news is they’d be flying to Anaheim to play the Angels if that were the case, and we all know how that seems to work out.

In any event, A.J. Burnett has the ball tonight as the Tigers make their first trip in to the new Stadium. Rookie Lucas French goes for Detroit, as the Yankees will try to put that whole “can’t hit unknown pitchers” fallacy to rest.

Great game, Thank you AROD, WE really needed that BOMB.. Too bad we couldn’t get the shutout out, BUT! A win is a WIN!!!
CC gets the win….

Great pitchers battle going on, But with no base runners we can’t score. Jeter is the only one doing anything. With the number of pitches being thrown, This could be near the end of this day for CC. He is not showing the stuff he has in the past, What goes, Did he lose the overpowering pitches. He appears to be just going through the motions, Is he saving himself for the September run? Certainly he’s not worth what he is being paid!
Are Joe and Cash the only one that this team will make it to the WS. Same old problems can’t hit, All pitchers look like Cy Young candidates, We can’t pitch, Lasting 7 innings is a major problem.
OK w/Damon on 2nd can we get him home?? That is the Question.

I’m asking the same question, WHY not use Hinske, If they’re trying to showcase Swish It’s not working, he’ going in reverse.. THE bullpen tonight (HUGHES) has done a great job, 2 innings 3 hits 6 Ks not bad. After the delay it’ll be Mariano. Time to sit Melky again! Put Gard out there. I didn’t think AJ has his stuff tonight but he held them to 3 runs. We must improve our Pitching staff, What we thought was going to be a good group of starters didn’t quite work out, 2 of 5 just doesn’t cut it. WE need to be more consistant down the stretch.

Can the Yankee bull pen hold onto the lead? That’s the big question now.

Why did they leave Hinske out again tonight? He’d be better than Swisher in the field and at the plate. He’s a good player and I can’t understand why Girardi doesn’t use him more.

I hope I make it through the whole second half. What if I die??

Already the Sox are ahead of the Blue Jays 2-0 and the Yankees are behind the Tigers 2-1. Need a strong game from AJ tonight and late into the game and timely hitting at the plate. It’s important for the Yankees to get off to a hot start after the All Star break. They can’t afford to fall any farther behind. Doesn’t sound like JP Riccardi wants to deal Halliday to the AL east division. He’ll probably end up with the Halos or the Phillies or another NL team. Certainly the Yankees need him but want the Blue Jays would want in return and whether the Yankees have the blue chip prospects they’d want is the question. Yankees not as deep as the Sox in their minor league system.
