Jeter: All-Star Game shouldn’t count

Plenty going on here in St. Louis, where the American League and National League have announced their lineups for tomorrow’s All-Star Game. Roy Halladay will get the ball for the A.L. and Tim Lincecum is on the mound for the N.L.

I’m working on a full story about Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera making their 10th trips to the Midsummer Classic, but here’s a nugget that just didn’t fit in from today’s media session. Jeter once again said that the All-Star Game shouldn’t count for home field advantage in the World Series.

“I don’t like that,” Jeter said. “I just don’t think this should determine home field advantage. I’ve said that year in and year out. I think it adds some excitement and more people pay attention to the game, maybe, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a situation where players play harder because of it. Even when the game didn’t matter, players came and played hard.”

Jeter’s suggestion is that the team with the best record at the end of the season should determine home field advantage. He has no idea if expecting a change is realistic.

“You might want to ask the Commissioner,” Jeter said. “I’m just giving you my opinion.”

For what it’s worth, Joe Maddon said that he is going with the idea. He just wishes the Rays had taken advantage of it last October.

Young started his career at 2B and Zobrist was filling in there for Iwamura, but I agree Kinsler would have been a wiser choice.

npyankeefan, I definitely agree. I’d like to see Jeter get out of this game after one or two ABs, but it might not happen. Maddon really handcuffed himself for middle infielders when he chose Pena instead of Kinsler to replace Pedroia, so now Aaron Hill is the only second baseman on the team. Will he play all 9, or maybe Maddon’s planning on putting Michael Young or Bartlett at second…? I don’t think either of those is a good plan, but haven’t heard.

Yes. Good to have Jeter get more rest. In past years he’s had rest from being hit on the hands too much. Thank God Daniel Cabrera is in the NL, but last I heard he was in danger of being released.

Usually I hate to see Jeter taken out of a game so another player gets a chance. But this year I won’t be upset if he only plays 2 or 3 innings. I want to see him rested for the second half of the season. Anyone agree?

It was a great idea at first. But I agree with Jeter- the outcome of the ASG should not determine home advantage. You have a group of stars playing together once a year deciding the site instead of a TEAM who plays through an entire season to attain the best win record.

Baseball tries so hard to get the public involved in the season and this ploy is inept at best.

I think it’s fair.
Whoever wins, whether the AL or NL, they won fair and square & they should get something for it. That’s just my opinion though. http://tribechick.mlblogs.com/
