FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

Most of the pregame discussion today revolved around Joba Chamberlain’s poor start last night and his future in the Yankees mix, which as you guessed, is as a starting pitcher. Joe Girardi looked up Greg Maddux’s statistics from 1987 to prove a point that dominant starters don’t always immediately translate, but those Cubbies were headed to a sixth-place finish in the NL East. … Dave Eiland sums it up:  “He’s getting into a lot of deep counts, hitters are seeing a lot of pitches and he’s getting predictable at times.”He’s learning how to be a starter in this league. That’s not as easy as it looks. Joba came on the scene and set the world on fire, and people expect him to be perfect all the time. That’s not going to be.” … Courtesy of MLB.com’s Lyle Spencer, here’s Chone Figgins on last night’s entanglement with Jorge Posada: “He’ll be on highlight shows forever now. He should thank me.” … The first inning showed us career homer No. 569 for A-Rod, tying him for 10th on baseball’s all-time list with Rafael Palmeiro.

DRAFT UPDATE: The Yankees today announced the signing of two more players from their 2009 First-Year Player Draft – seventh-round pick, RHP Sean Black and 12th-round pick RHP Brett Gerritse…the Yankees have signed 17 players from their 2009 draft class, including seven of their first 12 selections.

And now, here’s a iPhone photo of the second inning, already in action:

Fans: I don’t mean to down play Hughes’ success. Just trying to point out that he was given time to recover his game and is doing very well. Joba was put out there for people to love or hate.

His fist pumps, his arrogance, stubbornness, stupidity, his body size, his parentage, his legal problems have been brought up by naysayers in the worst possible way.

He doesn’t do the fist pump or the walks around the mound anymore. SomeONE stopped him. Now his personality is as flat as his current pitching. Where did the real Joba go? I want him back. Desperately.

Part 2. Pitcher development

4. JOBA starts off medium well – has first innnings problems. IT IS SAID that he is trying to call his own pitches and is difficult to catch. Does well with Molina. His ups and downs include a 4 run first inning against Boston then he proceeds to strike out 12 batters. Still loses the game. Where is run support. He averages 5+ innings, an average of 3 runs when he leaves the game. Offense in a slump and won’t always pick him up. He could be at 6 or 7 wins from THAT time frame early in the season. Joba stops that BAD slump by winning a game and w/i that same winning streak pitches an OK game that the offense and bp pick up for a win. Remember that? All of a sudden whatever was ailing him hits like thunder. Can’t pitch more than 3 innings. Earlier in the season, he wasn’t really hit too hard. Easy fly outs and grounds outs and an occasional hard hit. (Only 17 HR in 209 career IP. But, hey yell the fans isn’t he supposed to be perfect? Put him in the pen.

Hughes is called up for Wang and distinguishes himself well. When Wang returns – Hughes goes to the pen and even does better there. Good for Hughes.

The point of this long rant is that: Joba should be given EVERY opportunity to regroup as a pitcher as Hughes was given. Both have had horrid games and wonderful games. Management has indeed treated both badly by switching them back and forth as starter to reliever. Will Joba recover? Give him time like Hughes was. Wouldn’t it be great to have TWO home-grown pitches heading our rotation in a a few years?? Matt, thank you for your points.

Egad I have to type this twice. Re: Pitcher development.

1. Joba entered the Yankee system as a starter in 2007 and blew through the minor leagues and was called up as a RELIEVER. Bid mistake. He was star-like in the 8th with his bom-t-bom personality and unbelievable fast ball. Everyone thought he was great! Well, didn’t you?

HUGHES: entered the system in 05 or 06 as the fair haired boy. In 2007 he and Kennedy were starters. Both bombed dismally. Injuries, whatever.

2. JOBA is starting in 2008 and doing well. Injures shoulder and goes on DL. Returns from DL to the bullpen. Big mistake. Should have rehabbed in AAA to recoup.

HUGHES still in AAA doing very well.

3. JOBA 2009 ST – struggling in ST. Obviously not a happy camper. Still goes into rotation.

HUGHES: Shines in ST – still goes back to AAA altho it is obvious that Wang is struggling. end of Part l.

My 2 cents:
– On days where the offense scores 6 and 8 runs respectively, calling them lazy and underachievers is kinda off the mark. All blame goes to pitching in those instances.
– The Yankees basically have a 2-man starting rotation; Joba needs to pitch the 8th. Hughes needs to start. And if they don’t show significant improvement, trade ‘em. Period.
– There is NO REASON for Cody Ransom to be on this team, let alone playing in lieu of Hinske. Good riddance.
– Yes, homegrown needs to be developed BUT someone needs to evaluate the TRUE WORTH of the homegrown talent. In other words, enough of trading away the talent and keeping the scrubs.
– Halladay could be a Trojan horse. It’s a situation that needs to be evaluated CAREFULLY both pro and con. (I suggest cash and players to be named later. But that won’t fly.)
– Not sad to see Abreu go. Melky, Gardner, and Hinske are all better defensively (I’d say he’s about equal w/ Swisher in that regard) and as for losing his bat there’s more than enough pop in that lineup–as their #2 rank in HRs hit over the season will attest to–so, whatever. The problem w/this team isn’t a lack of offense–it’s reliable, consistent pitching that’s missing.

Well back to 2 games behind Baston!! Will it END?? Who knows!!

Talk about a bullpen turn around… 8 earned runs tonight, and Robertson let 2 of his inherited runners from Pettitte score (on the first pitch he threw no less)?!?!?! Now why has the bullpen looked so shaky the last 3 games, oh I know why… because management thought it would be a smart idea to start Aceves on Thursday instead of calling up Mitre. If Mitre comes up and gets a loss, oh well he gets a loss, but he’s not going to be on a strict pitch count that basically would have put Aceves at 5 innings max anyways. This in turn then wouldn’t have rendered Aceves unusable the past 2 days and maybe instead of throwing Robertson and Tomko out there today (who both have been rather terrible I might add), maybe you have Aceves in there for 2ish innings to stop the bleeding, instead of opening up the wound MORE. The management of the Yankees continues to make stupid decisions when it comes to calling up players, sending down players, DFA players (takes far too long for the last 2 points in my opinion) or using players correctly.
We have to expect some growing pains with Joba, that’s just how it’s going to be, and I understand that. However, the coaching staff and Posada need to get into his head, and tell him to start mixing his pitches more and to STOP SHAKING OFF SO MANY PITCHES. I swear I’ve never seen a young pitcher call of a catcher (established vet no less) as much as I’ve seen Joba call off his catchers this year. Joba tries to nibble everything (ala Pettitte) instead of being aggressive and attacking hitters, like he did so well coming out of the pen. I think it may be time to send Dave Eiland packing, he obviously has no control over his pitching staff, and he has obviously not found any way to get his pitchers to pitch better. I mean damn, Pettitte was behind 2-1 on just about EVERY batter he faced today. These pitchers are throwing too many pitchers, and their Strike-to-Ball ratio is terrible. Other than CC and Burnett, the Yankees rotation has been awfully inconsistent the whole year. Cashman needs to make some moves to shore up this roster of his. It took them forever to dump Berroa and the other sh!tties from the roster, now it’s time for Ransom, Tomko and Robertson to join them…

And just think….the Angels #3 and #4 man were not even in the game! Seems as though the Yankees are loaded with free agent pick-ups, over paid and underachievers, I don’t think add more to the roster is the answer. A solid coach, team chemistry and young players is the future.

Matt,

Some good point! But give me Halladay! The Yankees are not the Mets! The Yankees are the Yankees and with Halladay the Yankees win #27 Baby! Just Win Baby! You can’t be a dynasty unless you win!!!

Here’s the thing Todd our young pitchers continue to show VERY little development when given the chances at the major league level. I mean 8 runs today and they lose by 6? Management continues to try and use/develop these pitchers to no avail. They continue to fail vs. the good teams. Frankly this is the same *RAP Yankee fans have seen since the IDIOT GM took over. If you are right Todd that the Coaches are not doing their job then heads ought to roll. Instead the IDIOT GM does nothing. This is the peter principle at its best. An incompetent surrounded by incompetents.

Chances that we would be able to get Halladay is very slight. We can offer Cano, Wang, Swisher, Matsui, Damon, Robertson, Alba ETC. etc. and pay most of their salary, Throw in a couple of AA MLers and we still won’t get him…. But it would be nice!!..

Like

Put Hughes back into rotation. Put Joba back in Pen! Trade Damon, Matsui, and what is needed to get Halladay!!!

seeknay,
I think the Coaches have alot to do with the Pathetic shape of our pitching staff. Also in San Fran, Tampa are NOT expected to win and are NOT under the PRESSURE of New York. There is a HUGE difference in developing in those cities then here. THE Yankees are EX{ECTED to win WIN everything so developing talent here is NOT the correct thing to do, LOOK at Joba come on he belongs in the pen or SEND him down to develope there but he has PROVEN he will NT develope on this level.
Girardi should see this if he is any good, BUT we all know what the HELL he is, IN TRAINING himself, again ANOTHER mistake by Crashman!!
This team has proven again and again that they can’t beat GOOD teams teams with talent, so teams like Boston who develope GOOD TALENT in the minors will CONTINUE to beat the Yanks, and until we get rid of Crashman and Levine this team is HOPELESS!!!

Like

oneof5 these two games show the Yankees need another starter. One great one is out there, guarantee the IDIOT GM doesn’t do anything.

Like

Yeah mattys but Tampa Bay & San Fran players DEVELOPED. Cain and Linecum are excellent starters and showed improvement in their development. Tell me what improvement do you see in Joba? in Hughes? in Coke? in Robertson? In any of this team’s younger pitchers? Robertson & Coke REALLY looked great today, didn’t they? I just do not see improvement. So either these guys were sold to us fans or the Yankee Coaching absolutely SUCKS!

Like

Great. 9th inning and hit into a DP. total disaster. Are the Angels really that good or are the Yankees always intimidated by them every time they play in their stadium. Both the Sox and the Angels have the Yankees number this year and if that doesn’t change the Yankees won’t make it to the world series.

Like

I’d take the job tgooch for half the $$$ our IDIOT GM makes. Sure would not make the same mistakes and with Halladay out there I’d be on the phone.

Today’s game is like a softball game! Thank god for this good young talent! lol

tgooch totally agree with you on Halladay. That idiot GM of the Yankees ought to be on the phone as we speak trying to make that deal. But you know as well as anyone on this blog knows, Crashman is too stupid to make a deal like that. And there Yankee fans is the main reason why this team has not won a WS since 2000, an IDIOT GM!!!

Seeknay, I would make you GM of the Yankees!

Not acceptable 7 runs in one inning. Pettite and Joba cannot pitch more than 4 innings. Past that they fall off the map. Why were they not playing Hinske more often since trading for him? He’s a good 3rd baseman, 1st baseman and outfielder. Why did we not sign Abreu? Better to have kept Abreu and not signed Swisher. Posada is doing nothing at the plate today offensively or defensively. Two passed balls resulting in at least one run and maybe more. If you can’t beat the Sox and the Angels you’re not going to win any world series. It’s ok to beat the lesser teams but you have to beat the best if you’re going to be a champion team. Now another run so four runs behind again. No hope and by the end of the day probably 2 games behind the Sox. Bad series.

So mattys the Yankees should keep their young talent even thou their young talent continues NOT to develop or is misplaced, especially in the area of pitching. By the way one of those “young Talents” is on the mound now, Phil Coke. this team has crawled back in the game and Coke is struggling in the bottom of the 8th. My question continues to be when the *ELL does this “young talent” grow the *ELL up & develop?

Like

the Yankees win, but they are not winners. They don’t have character as a team, they are just a collection of talented players. Why haven’t they been able to beat the Angels for years? This year they can’t beat the Red Sox either. It’s very frustrating because it is obvious that is all in their heads.

Like

What dynasty? we have not won a champioship since 2000? Yankees will always draft good young players and develop them. You must have a good balance. Keeping Hughes and Joba was smart. But not getting Santana and not getting Halladay is wrong to Today’s Team. Give them a chance to win. In the 90’s Yankees would pick up pieces in July like David Cone, Cecil Fielder, to give them a chance to win. Win #27 and a dynasty will follow! You play to win now!

Like

The same way Rivera wasn’t a starter mattys. Rivera would give 4-5 innings when he was starting and then run out of gas. When I look at where Chamberlain has had success it has been in the bullpen NOT in a starters role. Why the *ELL are the Yankees using Hughes in the pen when all along fans have been told he’s a starter. I mean Crashman didn’t trade Hughes for Santana because Hughes was suppose to be this great starter. How the *ELL can Hughes become this starter when he’s being used in the pen? It sounds like neither, Girardi, Eiland or Crashman have any idea of what they are doing or what works. Pettitte is doing the same thing he did last year, running out of gas in the summer. When you score 8 runs on the road you ought to win the *AMN game.

I do NOT think alot of people-FANS would be complaining if the Friggin ticket prices weren’t the HIGHEST in Baseball or if we had a MANAGER that was NOT learning on the JOB or if we TIME to let our pitchers grow with the team and NOT learn on the JOB but don’t FORGET we are NOT the Royals, NOT the Marlins, NOT the Pirates this is the NEW YORK YANKEES we should be the best have the BEST and the FANS expect the BEST… IF not LOWER the FRIGGIN prices and then grow a FRIGGIN minor league team in the majors..
JOBA is NOT ready to be a STARTER, Girardi is NOT ready to be manager and Pettitte is old and should have been released or RETIRED last year!! We should have traded Kennedy for SANTANA when we had the chance!! Crashman has to go!!

I can’t believe this… Back to back nights the starter doesn’t even get through 5 innings, and both were HANDED 4+ run leads. If these past 2 games haven’t proved that the Yankees NEED to make a deal (or promote) for another starting pitcher and another reliever, I DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL!!!! Robertson has been garbage his last few times out, Pettitte has been inconsistent all year, as has Joba. Bruney shouldn’t have been activated off the DL as soon as he was, and there’s NO WAY Aceves should’ve started that game. That has thrown the whole bullpen out of whack. Pettitte was garbage today, he was pitching behind every batter today, I think every batter had no less than a 2-1 count on him. When you have to keep pitching from behind to every batter, you’re obviously going to get hit hard and give up runs. When you work ahead of the batters, you can make YOUR pitches, instead of having to lollipop pitches down the middle. Cashman better get on the horn and fix these holes, AND FAST!

Seeknay, I think we’re all confused, I believe Joe is also confused.
Starting Aceves was also a weird situation.. Makes one wonder!

Like

I’m somewhat confused. Hughes, who the Yankees did NOT trade for Santana, was suppose to be the next developed starter for the Yankees. Chamberlain, who works better out of the pen than he does as a starter, continues to give this team 4-5 innings of inconsistent starting work. And the pitching coach plus the manager are not concerned? With Wang on the DL & giving the Yankees very little this year, why in the *ELL isn’t Hughes starting? Considering the front office did NOT trade him for Santana. Like I said I’m somewhat confused.
