Melancon called up

Mark Melancon has been summoned to join the Yankees bullpen for tonight’s game against the Angels, according to the Scranton Times-Tribune.

After yesterday’s game, Joe Girardi told reporters that adding an arm to the bullpen would be “something we’re going to have to talk about,” after five relievers backed up an ineffective Alfredo Aceves and helped the Bombers post an 8-6 victory over the Twins, completing a three-game sweep at the Metrodome and running New York’s road winning streak to eight games.

A roster move will be announced before tonight’s game. Dave Robertson walked in two runs yesterday and did, in his words, “a terrible job,” so he could be the leading candidate to be sent to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Jonathan Albaladejo picked up the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, Phil Coke recorded two outs and Phil Hughes added four more to get the ball to Mariano Rivera.

The right-handed Melancon, 24, was 4-0 with three saves and a 2.50 ERA in 25 appearances at Triple-A. In 39 2/3 innings, Melancon allowed 25 hits and 14 runs (11 earned), walking nine and striking out 42 while holding opponents to a .175 batting average.

He made four appearances with the Yankees from in late April and early May, allowing two runs in 3 1/3 innings (5.40 ERA).

It’s likely all will be back in September plus others!

Ransom hasn’t shown the stellar defense to warrant starts over Hinske if we thought enough of Hinske to deal for him. Furthermore I’d rather see Peña and Hinske be subs than Ransom and Hinske, I miss the youth aspect that Peña and Cerveli brought to this club. Hopefully we’ll see them again soon.

I’m not sure of what kind of defense Hinske brings to 3B but I’m anxious to find out!

I just think that Girardi should play Hinske more often at 3B or 1B (especially at 3B) than Ransom and have Ransom play SS or 2B. The bottom line is that Girardi should use Hinske more on field and as a pinch-hitter.

Hinske can’t play 2B or SS.

Glad to see that Melancon got called up, perhaps he can do better this time around.

When will Ransom be DFA?!? I’m getting tired seeing him instead of Hinske, I mean, why have Ransom play when Hinske is clearly a better player than he is?

I like the call-up of Melancon, he should be able to provide some solid innings for this pen. I didn’t like and still don’t like Aceves starting the game yesterday. What was the point of having him start a game with a STRICT pitch count of 65? They would’ve been better off (from a bullpen standpoint) calling up Sergio Mitre, George Kontos or even Kei Igawa to make 1 start. If that happened, they wouldn’t have taxed Aceves to the point where he won’t pitch again before the break, or most likely wouldn’t have had to use 6 pitchers during the game. I don’t understand some of the decisions (or even no-decisions) that Girardi makes. I think it’s time that the Yankees seriously consider dealing for a starting pitcher, especially with Wang out again (and for who knows how long..). I don’t think the Yankees will make any push for Halladay (as has also been reported on various fronts) although I’d obviously love to have him in the rotation. I also agree with all you guys that think Cody Ransom needs to go. Why did Cashman go and make a trade for Eric Hinske (who can play LF, RF, 3B and 1B) if Girardi isn’t going to play him? He’s a FAR BETTER option than Ransom, and he should be getting the playing time when one of the corner fielders needs a day off. Hopefully Cashman can better tie-up the active roster so the Yankees can make a legitimate playoff push this year, and have the pieces to get to October (with the likes of Ransom and Tomko on the roster for example, really drops the active roster to 23 or so)…
