Father’s Day weekend stories on MLB.com

Two Father’s Day stories to share with you — the first is something I was working on for a good portion of the week, finally sitting down with Joe Girardi in his Yankee Stadium office before the rain delay on Thursday and sharing a lengthy conversation about his father, Jerry, and how the family is coping with his advanced Alzheimer’s. That story is here.

We also have a Father’s Day feature on Mark Teixeira, whose father, John, attended the United States Naval Academy and served as a pilot in the Navy. It should be no surprise that Teixeira has earned raves around Major League Baseball for his structure, discipline and work ethic — all of which Teixeira credits to his father, who he called “the biggest influence in my life.

As part of the feature, we had to round up a few photos of Dad & son to accompany them. John Teixeira was gracious enough to send four along, and we are running two of them on the site — Tex at age 13 as an American Legion ballplayer in a Flash panel on yankees.com, and Tex in 2001 signing his first professional contract with the story, with Dad and Nolan Ryan looking on.

Those are great, but this is actually my favorite. Here is 4-year-old Mark Teixeira with Dad and his sister Elizabeth at Walt Disney World (thanks to Mr. Teixeira):

I would definitely go with Chamberlain over Pettitte and Burnett since both have struggled, and Burnett is a disappointment. Chamberlain offers a better chance of success who cares if he has fewer IP than Burnett and Pettitte?

Sure, three wins is better than five or six!

Somehow nyhighlife did not post @ 1:38 PM. In any case you are entitled to your opinion. But another attack on anyone’s “common sense” and “baseball Knowledge” is a really cheap, dirty shot! Shame on you!!!

My point on the bench was that Cashman’s design was for a bench of the loser of Cabrera/Gardner plus Molina, Ransom, and Swisher. What the Yanks started with was already one removed from that and quickly became three.
If you consider the “design” weak, then further discussion is futile.

Since Joba has only 13 starts, I’m looking only at the first 13 for Burnett and Pettitte. This started before their 14th. How did that get past you?

Had Joba gone nine in that game he still would have less innings. The results are half of Pettitte’s wins. “results is all that counts”- M. Saiki.

In case the stats are not as clear as I see, the results show Chamberlain through 13 starts has produced three less wins than Pettitte, two less than Burnett, and ten less innings pitched than both! Though I love Joba, right now he would be my fourth choice to start a game!!!
By RobertGKramer@AOL.Com on June 22, 2009 2:59 PM

IF the stats are clear to you, then you either need to clean your glasses or get a new pair. Chamberlain has pitched far better than Burnett and Pettitte and has put up better than numbers than the either in every significant category. For anyone to want these guys to pitch ahead of Chamberlain goes beyond common sense and show a lack of baseball knowledge. That’s hilarious, you want a FA bust who hasn’t lived up to expectations or his contract, and an over the hill pitcher who has been mediocre most of the season to pitch ahead of a pitcher who can be far more dominant and has abetter chance of winning a game. You must graduated head of your class from Crashman’s school for wannabe GM’s.

Another thing, the Yanks started with a very weak bench, so it wouldn’t have mattered if the bench was hit by injuries, the results would be the same either way regardless.

For those fans complaining about Jeter’s swinging at the first pitch, others will say there was reason to expect that pitch to be the best to hit in that AB. And Girardi’s choice not to sit A-Rod sooner is somewhat offset by the frightening specter of Berroa at 3B.

We all had high hopes for the team that Cashman assembled for 2009, but injuries destroyed the bench and unanticipated poor performances have us off to our fifth consecutive year of a slow start. We have not been a first half team since 2004.

My biggest concern is the inconsistent starting pitching and George would have changed coaches by now. Wake up Hal! I am also one who expected better offensive preparation from Girardi over Torre’s last few teams. Girardi was to bring a “fresh approach” that has yet to provide any improvement. Poor results against losing teams are discouraging and unacceptable. Should someone like Showalter replace Girardi? Maybe yes! We shall see!!!

Appreciate your in game perspectives yanksfor27. Alas this team should have won 2 out of 3 and perhaps swept this series. Good winning teams do that, this team finds ways NOT to do that. There is something VERY wrong with this squad and I think you may have hit on it with your second bullet point. Not sure the older players like playing for Girardi and not sure Girardi knows what he is doing. All in all this season might be a long way from being over but it sure doesn’t look good for Yankee fans.

Like

This team makes me sick. The bullpen can’t get anyone out (except Bruney and Aceves), the starters are terribly inconsistent (CC has been solid as of late, but everyone else is hot or cold) and the offense looks too stagnant. It seems to me that the offense only has big fly on their mind, no small ball. Girardi won the NL Manager of the Year with the Marlins, they played tons of small ball. Why can’t he instill that with this team? Why can’t he get these guys to perform at the peak of their collective abilities, but he could get no-names and prospects to do it in Florida? I think Kevin Long as a hitting coach has done a lot of good for some of the guys on the team (most notably Cano), and I’m not so sure he has been the problem. A lot of people said how good Dave Eiland is as a pitching coach, but I’m not seeing the results from the pitchers. The control on all of the pitchers has been shaky at best this whole season. Joba’s stuff is too damn good to be throwing 100 pitches in 5 innings, with 53 being strikes and 47 being balls. Are you serious with that kind of split? Joba doesn’t need to nit-pick the corners with his stuff, he needs to start attacking hitters, like he did coming out of the bullpen. Don’t start the whole “well move him back to the bullpen” bs argument, he SHOULD be a starter, he just needs to start acting like it. Burnett has either been lights out or mediocre, same with Andy. Chien-Ming Wang has improved (although be it slightly), and he really needs to pull his head out of his rear end and start pitching like the guy who led the MAJORS in wins the past 2ish seasons. CC has been the best and most consistent pitcher for the Yankees, and he should be considering he is a true, front-of-the-rotation ace (hopefully today isn’t anything serious, more as a precaution). Hughes looked like he was starting to find a groove out there, maybe he should be back in the rotation (definitely if Wang struggles against the Braves on Tuesday). I also don’t want to see Hughes continue to pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the season, because then his innings will be low and they’ll put a low innings cap on him for next season.
It took far too long for the Yankees to do something with Veras, but Tomko hasn’t been a HUGE upgrade, although he has done better than Veras. Eiland and Girardi need to figure something out, and FAST. To lose 4 of 6 to the Nationals and Marlins is inexcusable. If Mr. Steinbrenner was still in charge, heads would’ve already rolled this season, and that’s not even including the sweet 0-8 record vs the Red Sox this season.
How did this team go from being the BEST team in ALL of baseball, to a mediocre team again? From May 8 to June 4 (beginning and ending between series’ vs the Rays) the Yankees went 19-7. Since June 4, the Yankees have gone 6-9, including 4 losses to the NATIONALS AND MARLINS… That is ridiculous, in every sense of the word. This team, from upper management to #25 on the active roster need to right this ship fast, or the Yankees won’t make the playoffs.

it is beginning to look and feel a lot like last year…an old team with indifferent millionaires. a high strung manager that was hired because of his strong in-game management skills (isnt that a joke), an invincible GM who hasn’t a clue when it comes to scouting talent or heart, and an ownership team that is no longer George Steinbrenner (the greatest owner in the history of Major League Baseball)…it is beginning to look a lot like last year and I am beginning to miss Joe Torre…

I just can’t understand how we find different ways to lose games against non-contenders teams. I noticed lately how Cano is “again” offering swing at first pitches. Well that might work out 2 or 3 at bats but every team in MLB has video, guess what? They’re not going to throw 4seemer in the zone next time he comes around. The 2 loses vs. WAS well a good example of “rule #1 do not undervalue your opponent” every other MLB team can beat you at any time if you don’t play at major league level.
First game in Miami, outstanding pitching performance by Andy; he combined a 7 inn, 8 so, no BB (first time in his career… source ESPN) is it coincidence that we win when our pitchers don’t throw BB or at least not too many. I guess that has been our problem lately don’t you agree?
Second game vs. the marlins, well I attended to that one [very hot in MIA] well at some point our only hit was a loop single by A. J. “WTH…” are you serious? Well not to take away credit from Johnson after all he’s got a decent record and good velocity. In my opinion the second best start of A.J. in the season and it was shadow by defensive errors and more “inexplicable plays by Girardi” Well YES this time Joe sent Jeter to the play with Gardner in 2nd and Alex in 1st and nobody out. Well we’re losing 2-1 in the 8th and what was the play to be made was “bunt” to advance the runners but yet again Jeter tried to bunt after a first pitch ball and he fouled. Third pitch he swung the bat hard and again fouled. After that you all know what happened, I want someone to explain why Jeter did not tried to bunt after the first attempt [I mean put you self in position to make a good bunt], I can’t find the answer, is Jeter playing on his own or does not matter what Girardi calls for if you are an experience player making millions every year. My impression is that Girardi is lacking of respect from older players and his lack of character will take him to unemployment [hopefully]. We lost the game 2-1 in a game we should’ve won.
Came the third game, C.C. was gone in the second and out of the ‘pen was ACE, he came in a little off the zone but did what he was suppose to do [get people out]. Well we combined some hits for 3 runs and sailed for our 2 out of three against the fish but Tomko made some bad pitches and poor outfield support from Melky with the offline throw and we end the 7 inning 6-3. Well there came the top of the 9 after Alex K’ and Cano 4 – 3 out Jorge came with a single, followed by Melky single and then Gardner triple we were trailing 6-5, Damon BB made the inning more interesting because Girardi replaced him by Ramiro Pena and Jeter came to the plate. Tie run in third and go ahead in first with 2 out. The play I think would be Pena steal second without throw because Gardner is in third heading home is the throw is made to second. Everything was working perfectly for a nice comeback and yet again Jeter swung at the first pitch [retired 6-4]. And we lose again to an under 500 team for consecutive day.
My questions are:
• Is Jeter playing on his own? Why is he arguing borderline pitches instead of concentrating in hitting poor pitching?
• Is Girardi lacking of respect from the older Torre’s era players? Or is he making these dumb plays which I can’t find in the book and which outcome makes him look like a rookie in his job. Why replacing Johnny for Pena if the play is not going to be tried out. Very disappointing.
• Why is Berroa playing so bad? Was he really rookie of the year? [I have no faith in this system of baseball writers] the rookie of the year should’ve been Matsui. I can’t believe is no one better in AAA who can play better baseball.
I’m very disappointed of the players saying that they did not play well and they can’t do anything but look at the next game. At that pace we will not be in the playoffs and that will really suck. I hope they turned the season around ASAP vs. ATL and we can made this a successful road trip.
Peace,
Go Yankees 4ever

Again NOTHING this mgmt. does gets this team near a WS title. Now if CC is hurt for an extended period of time they are in DEEP trouble. Again the failure of the ballpen to shut a team down. I thought Tomko would help them but all he has become is MORE OF THE SAME in relief. That is why I say the pink slips need to start with Long and Eiland. Then if Girardi doesn’t get the point he’s next in line followed by the one that should be fired first Crashman.

Part of the game, it’s like he accepts things and doesn’t know how to avoid them. Sorry Joe but I’m old school I guess. Just think hit and run or sacrificing in that situation would have been the better move. It’s late in the game, you have very few AB’s remaining, runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs and a hobbled Jeter at the plate. Sorry Joe try managing a little and either hit and run or sacrifice with Jeter. Instead you get the rally killer DP. Great managing Joe.

56 GDP according to MLB stats. That’s less than Boston, but only because Mike Lowell has ground into 15! Definately Girardi should be putting some play on with Jeter, he’s not going to hit it out of the ballpark…the DP is always likely with his approach

Like

Probably in top 10 in that category candyrunts. Tell you if I were part of the Metro NY media I’d be asking Girardi why he didn’t sacrifice or hit and run with Jeter in the 8th. Way to much station to station baseball with this team. Like I had stated previously Girardi is not much of a manager when it comes to manufacturing runs.

CC Vs Volstad tomorrow. I don’t know anything about Volstad other than he’s been rocked a bit recently. He’s still probably going to morph into Nolan Ryan against the Yanks but Sabathia should keep it close. What did I tell You? Good old Cano hits into another double play. What was that? 6 double plays in the series so far for the Nats? Another game the Yankees should have won and blew.

With this team’s inconsistent offense then the sacrifice bunt should have been called for in the 8th inning. That takes managing and I am not sure this team has one at the moment.

Like

The Yanks had their big chance in the 8th with no outs and two guys on base and they blew it. Won’t come back in the 9th I don’t think. Another blown chance to keep up with the Sox and get ahead of the Jays and Rays.

Like

Johnson is a good pitcher. Is it only me or should Girardi have Jeter sacrifice in the last inning. Just think with a hobbled Jeter it might have been better to sacrifice in that given situation. Burnett pitched well tonight, deserved a better fate. As far as Damon in the field HE IS A DISASTER, ALWAYS HAS BEEN EVEN WHEN HE PLAYED WITH THE ROYALS. One of the big problems that has been created by this “great” GM has been that we have way too many DH’s.

Like

Damon misses a ball he should have caught, then strikes out with a man on third to end the inning. Jeter hits into a double play for the second time in the game. He used to be Mr. Clutch but not any more. He gives you no confidence any more that he’ll drive in a run in a clutch situation. Miscue by Damon and poor hitting against another Cy Young pitcher who they’ve never seen before and there’s the game. I have no confidence that the Yankees will win this one and against another poor team. By the way, the Sox won, so we’re 3 games behind again.

6 innings only one hit and that one by AJ, You’ve got to be kidding me. Have WE just forgotten how to hit, or as said b4 Cy Young has been reincarnated again. They can’t solve Johnson.

Like

Another Cy Young pitcher the Yankees are up against! They’re hopeless hitting pitchers they haven’t seen before. AJ has looked strong in some innings and hopefully has his curve ball working. Again, hitting seems to be the weak area so far. After a conference call with ARod they decided that he was fatigued and needed a couple of games off. I hope that’s the real reason for his poor performance over the past couple of weeks. It will be interesting to see how his rest results in his at bats over the next week or two. Somehow I don’t think it’s going to make any difference. ARod is overpaid and it’s fortunate we have Tex in the lineup this year. Too much of a circus around ARod with all the off field scenarios. Distracting for him and the team. Maybe he should sign a contract to do a movie in Hollywood.

What a great story about Joe Girardi and his dad. I had tears in my eyes reading it. Thank you. And God Bless the Girardis.

Andy did a great job last night, We have waited a long time for that kind of effort from him.. Yes, I have knocked when he was down and undeserving of praise, Now I will not say I was wrong, for one game does not remake him the great pitcher he was, but it’s the first step in showing he still has it in him.
