Yanks DVD has fans feeling perfect
As Bernadette Pasley writes here in a special contribution to MLB.com, a new six DVD set by Major League Baseball Productions is chronicling the best pitching performances at the old Yankee Stadium: the perfect games of Don Larsen, David Wells and David Cone, and the no-hitters of Dave Righetti, Jim Abbott and Dwight Gooden.
I received a copy of the set in the last couple of weeks and had a chance one night to drop on the couch and pop in a game. We’ve seen the Larsen game (after a long absence) on the MLB Network, and it seems like the YES Network has gotten plenty of run out of the Wells, Cone and Righetti games.
So no slight on Dr. K., but I was curious to see the Jim Abbott game. It’d been so long since I’d seen those old MSG graphics, and it really takes you back to see 1993, when the Yankees … well, just weren’t a very good team, coming out of the doldrums. Abbott walked five that afternoon but held the Indians hitless.
The pregame show flashed back to the previous night, when a Washington Heights kid named Manny Ramirez hit not one but two home runs at the Stadium, the first ones of his Major League career coming off Melido Perez and Paul Gibson (!).
And check out that Yankees lineup — Wade Boggs, Dion James, Don Mattingly, Danny Tartabull, Paul O’Neill, Bernie Williams, Matt Nokes, Mike Gallego, Randy Velarde. That takes you back.
