FROM THE CLUBHOUSE

This is an important start for Chien-Ming Wang on a number of levels. Of course it’s his second start since coming off the disabled list, and yes, he’s always had trouble with the Red Sox. But Wang’s wife is back home in New Jersey and due to give birth to the couple’s first child, a boy, at any moment. Yet he’s on the mound here in the first inning and there appears to be no chance he’ll be called away in the next few hours.

As far as expectations, Joe Girardi said that he wants six strong innings out of Wang, where he can be consistent with his sinker. That’s nothing new – that’s pretty much what they’ve wanted all year, but the 14.46 ERA makes it apparent that was easier said than done early on. They’ll let him go 80 to 95 pitches if everything’s firing right. (UPDATE: Wang was pretty lucky to escape the first inning with just one run scoring. It’s never a good sign that Dave Robertson was already throwing in the bullpen.)

Some brief updates — there is nothing physically wrong with Hideki Matsui, Girardi said, despite his 0-for-16 skid … Xavier Nady will rejoin the Yankees in New York on Friday and hang around for the weekend before they decide what the next step is. He has to show he can play the outfield before they’ll consider activating him … Break in case of emergency, but Phil Hughes can still give the Yankees 80 to 85 pitches … Girardi said that his kids were playing around on MLB.com voting for the All-Star Game and expressed no surprise that Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, at first base in the American League.

“Two big markets, two clubs that have huge followings, and two players that are playing exceptionally well,” Girardi said.

FROM THE GAME NOTES

Tonight the Yankees play the second game of a three-game series at Boston after a 7-0 loss in the series opener on Tuesday…the Yankees and Red Sox have identical 34-24 records, which is the best mark in the AL and the third-best in the Majors (Los Angeles-NL, 39-20 and Philadelphia, 33-23)…the Yankees have won 19 of their last 26 games, including a season-high nine-game winning streak (5/13-21), which started the stretch…are 10 games over .500, one game shy of their season high-water mark…have won 11 of their last 16 road games since 4/28 at Detroit…went 4-2 on their just-completed, rain-shortened six-game homestand vs. Texas (2-1) and Tampa Bay (2-1)…following this series the Yankees return home for a six-game Interleague homestand with three games vs. the Mets (Friday-Sunday) and three vs. Washington (6/16-18)…will play 11 of their next 17 games on the road.

The Yankees were shut out for the first time this season in Tuesday’s 7-0 loss at Boston, snapping a streak of scoring at least one run in 100 consecutive games since 8/12/08…was their longest such stretch since a 100-game span from 9/3/05-6/25/06…were shut out eight times last season.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, regardless of whether RHP Chien-Ming Wang (career: 54-23, .701) receives a win, loss or no-decision in tonight’s start at Boston, his winning percentage will be the highest for any pitcher through his first 100 starts with the Yankees since David Wells (.734, 58-21).

The New York Yankees announced today their game from Friday, 6/5 vs. the Tampa Bay Rays – postponed due to inclement weather – has been rescheduled for Monday, 9/ 7 at 7:05 p.m., as the second game of a day-night Labor Day doubleheader at Yankee Stadium.

Girardi needs to make some tough decisions now. First and foremost is Wang. Either trade him for prospects OR send him back to relief. He is done as a starter. No confidence or location. Either way the guy is done. Get his *** out of the rotation NOW. Secondly, drop Cano down in the order until he starts to hit again. Put him 8th or 9th. If he does not like it trade his *** away before July 31st. I have had it with his undisciplined at-bats. Get a 2nd baseman and/or middle relief. His “potential” is a joke. Third, time for Phil Hughes to grow up and step up. He’s the 5th starter, end of discussion.

7-0 Boston so far this year! And this FRIGGIN TEAM COULD CARE LESS!!
NO BALLS, NO GUTS, NO WORLD SERIES for this pathetic bunch of Friggin losers……

Like

There’s the game. No clutch hitting there. Whether it’s a 7-0 loss or 6-5 it’s still a loss and now we can’t win the series against the Sox. The best we can do is get 1. Started in 1st place, one game ahead, and now one game behind. Man, there is really something wrong with the psychology of this team playing the Sox this year so far. They’re jinxed and can’t play their way or pitch their way out of it. Disappointing to say the least!

Great. Cano hasn’t done much tonight either and now strikes out with pena on second. What kind of useless piece of hitting is that? The Yankees have got to get some better clutch hitting. The Sox have their number this year and I don’t know how they’re going to break this cycle.

Like

this ump is brutal

Like

Rodriguez walks. At least he gets on base. he hasn’t done much tonight obviously and it looks like Jeter has been useless in hitting leaving 5 men on base. That’s really bad. He’s got to get it going. Now we have to depend on the bottom part of the batting order to get at least one run off Pabelbon. Another nail biter that we could easily lose, but whether you lose by 1 or 10 it’s still a loss and now we drop back one more game. There’s some mystic about Boston this year. perhaps it’s the reverse curse that the Sox have owned the Yankees this year.

another RISP with Pena’s steal…

So ARod didnt homer, but he walked, nice plate appearance……

Great. I just got in and went into the blog and the gameday pitch by pitch. We’re not getting the game up here. Here we go again. Another sweep by the Sox? If the Yankees don’t find a way to beat the Sox they’re never going to win the Division let alone the World Series. And the Rays are breathing down our neck again. We can’t afford to lose this game tonight but it looks like it’s over with Pablebon pitching and the way the Yankees are hitting. Man, what a disaster with Wang. Put Hughes in the rotation and knock Wang back to the bull pen. He pitched some good innings there after coming back and I don’t think at this point he’s got much more than 3 innings in him. Until that changes they can’t keep throwing him out there as a starter in critical games, especially against the Sox after we got blown out last night. Some poor decisions here by management. Oh well, the Sox are #1 again and if we don’t win tomorrow we’ll be 2 games behind and playing catch up again.

Not a bad idea Coach, but I doubt Peavey waives his no trade to pitch for the Yankees……especially with the new stadium being a launching pad! But I do like your thinking!

Like

The lineup needs to be more consistent. They hit all those HRs at NY but they are very average elsewhere. I would love to see someone like Jeter(never happen) crawl in some of these guys ***&$. The problem is you now put pressure on all at bats. The pitching has been fairly good over the last few weeks. Now when the runs need to be their they aren’t. Here is a fictional trade:

Wang, Nady, Cervelli for Pevey and Giles

I personally don’t see what Eiland is doing for this team. He got the job because he was with Kennedy, Hughes, and Joba in the minors…….Kennedy has fallen off the earth with last year and now the surgery, Eiland hasn’t done a thing for Wang and he can’t seem to fix A.J……. can we find someone else?

Like

But I guess you can throw in the OVERPAID, OVERRATED, FRIGGIN LAZY UNDER ACHEIVING ballplayers on this Fracken team!!

it would be nice if Boston didn’t score in every inning, Hughes needs to hold them, we’re still only down 3, not insurmountable!

Obviously I don’t have any further info than you guys do watching the broadcast at this point, but my sense is that Wang would probably start on Tuesday vs. Washington. The Yankees have said all along that he’s in the rotation and one or two bad starts won’t change that. But of course it needs to be asked.

Like

Doesn’t make much sense to pull Wang after 2.2 unless he’s coming out of the rotation. The bullpen needs the rest and Wang needs to get hs pitchcount up, neither of those are going to happen now so is Hughes getting the start in five days?

Like

Hughes coming in.
WTF Girardi is Friggin Nuts..
Should have started Hughes NOT FRIGGED with Wang in this situation.
Girardi deserves a WEDGIE and then hung by his Jock Strap from the FRIGGIN foul pole…YES the Pesky pole..FRACKEN IDIOT!!!

Girardi should go with Eiland. Remember he is the one that SCREWED up the rotation for this series and like I said put WANG in a Terrible PRESSURE Spot the middle game!!!!!!
Girardi the Friggin Idiot!!!

Like

Wang needs to go see a psychologist. How can it take him 50+ pitches, plenty of walks leading to 3ERs and then his sinker suddenly comes back to him after he strikes out Youkillis to make Bay look like a rookie. Dave Eiland doesn’t do his career prospects much good when an ex-stud like Wang is so terrible.

Like

It’s OVER..Yankees won’t do ANTHING for the rest of the game…i’m OUT!!

Like

THATS STRAITS, NOT STRAIGHTS’.. Maybe he can hold them for a while and we can score some runs.

Like

With the pitching staff in Such sad Straights I look for Eiland to be the first to go. It appears that Wang has finally found the plate after giving up 2 more runs and%8 pitches in 2 innings.

Chen Ming Wang is done. It started to go in the playoffs, was solidified with the injury, and we are now seeing a scared player. He is a deer in head lights. Maybe show a little emotion out there. He looks like a robot.

Can the Wang experiment end? This guy needs to go. I appreciate all he has done in the past but it is time for him to say goodbye. He is a deer in headlights! Let Hughes start and try to get something for this guy.
