It’s Chien-Ming’s turn
Chien-Ming Wang gets the ball this afternoon as the Yankees try to bounce back from last night’s 6-4 loss to the Rangers. If Wang falters – and the Yankees don’t believe he will – it isn’t a one-and-done back to the bullpen. He’s in the rotation to stay for the foreseeable future, as they finally believe that the pitcher who logged 46 wins since the beginning of the 2006 season is back.
There’s an interesting feature today on MLB.com about how the new Yankee Stadium is playing historically small, which of course is not news to anyone who’s been watching the games. The stadium is – for whatever reason – a launching pad, and while the players originally wanted to say that it was probably a fluke after one or two homestands, it’s clear that this place seems to like the long ball.
The chart accompanying the story is remarkable – through 25 games, new Yankee Stadium had seen 91 home runs, compared with 47 through 25 games across the street last season. That comes out to almost 295 homers extrapolated over the course of a full season.
The MLB Draft is coming up on June 9 and I caught up with scouting director Damo Oppenheimer for a quick preview. Meanwhile, down at Double-A Trenton, Jesus Montero made his Eastern League debut. Check Mike Ashmore’s blog, where he has video of Montero’s first Double-A at-bat (dig that Three’s Company music!) plus Montero’s first hit and RBI.

REPEAT FROM PRIOR THREAD
Duncan,
No, I don’t remember your post, but Teix has sure tightened up the infield defense. And he can throw!!!
Our stongest outfield defense is with Gardner in center and Cabrera in right. Damon/Swisher in left would be a choice of better coverage vs. a better arm. We knew we would have weaknesses in the outfield, but I feel we can win regardless. My major concern is the bullpen, we’ll have to get that sorted out soon!
Is every left-handed Ranger going to hit Wang today?
Oh and Cruz; this guy is a beast. Interestingly before the 2008 season where he started mashing in the minors, he cleared waivers. 16HRs, 41RBIs and counting…
Watched first four innings of Wang today. Not too impressive of a performance. Looked good in the first two innings, after that it was DOWNHILL. If he does not improve in his next outing (assuming he gets another start) Girardi might flip flop him with Hughes. Big Thank You to Melky again for this one. Great hearing the Rangers announcers moan when he hit it.
Just finished watching my 1:30 hour “tape” delay and I thoughjt Wang was decent. Some of those left-handed Rangers did some good hitting and I gotta lookup where Nelson Cruz came from. He is a beast and it’ll be interesting to see what he does next at Fenway!!!
Now I’m watching what I can squeeze in before 7 PM of the Scranton double header. It’s 1-0 Yanks top of the third with 2 outs and bases loaded for Syracuse. EX-Yankee/Clipper Mike Vento walks off of Igawa to tie the score!
Igawa strikes out the Syracuse clean-up hitter Brad Eldred to end the threat.
Ransom just jacked a solo.
So it looks like the Rangers got Cruz out of Milwaukee before the 2006 season. His BA after 220 ML games for the Rangers in 2006-2008 was .262.
Whoops forgot to subtract the 52 games Cruz played this year!!
Hmmm. I wonder if OF draft prospect Brett Jackson is a cross between Brett Gardner and Austin Jackson?

Congrats to former Yankee Randy Johnson who just won his 300th game. The guy is a great competitor and richly deservant of this. Johnson becomes only the 6th lefty to win 300 games. See you in the Hall of Fame RJ.
Has anyone other than me noticed how many times Robinson Cano has grounded out to the second baseman this season? Seems like at least 50 times. Must be a record.
Has anyone besides me noticed how many times Robinson Cano has grounded out to the second baseman this season. Must be at least 50 and must be some kind of record.
Has anyone besides me noticed how many times Robinson Cano has grounded out to the second baseman this season. Must be at least 50 and must be some kind of record.
Those of us who saw the game witnessed a slice of baseball history, seeknay. One that we might not see again in our lifetimes.
It could have been Moose
…it’s seems a shame that the last guy ever in RJ might have done in front of a sparse Nationals crowd. Looking at the active leaders in wins, the only pitchers who’d seem to have even a remote possibility of getting there would be Pettitte, CC, Halladay and Santana – they’d all have to play well into their forties and stay healthy too.
I dont see Andy making 300. 80 more wins is 15 a season for the next 5 years. It’s possible but I dont see him pitching until he’s 43. CC? It’s possible but he’ll have to continue to pitch thru his 30′s as he has in his 20′s (much in the same way Clemens did) without missing too many beats, without too many stints on the DL. I also think, in today’s game there is little reason for a pitcher to throw 250+ innings or 10 CG’s a season. Considering the investment teams make in pitchers today, that kind of wear and tear isn’t going to lend itself to longevity. This isn’t the 80′s anymore. After the 80′s Clemens only hit 250+ IP twice, 91 and 97. I don’t see Halliday making it to 300. He’s already in his 30′s and has only 140 wins. He’d need to get himself to a perennial winner and out of Toronto to have any kind of shot. He’d need to average 16 wins a season for the next 10 years? Not in Toronto. Santana is already a 30 year old 10 year vet and has fewer wins than either CC or Roy. At 114 wins, that’s 19 wins to make it by 40, 16 by 42. Nothing is cast in stone for sure and one of these guys could turn out to be another Clemens or Unit and pitch well into their 40′s racking up wins. Two other factors: the 5-man rotation and revenue sharing. Good pitchers who used to come up with small market teams, developing their stuff and showing their potential used to get snapped up by the contenders (Yanks, Dodgers, etc….) and had more winning opportunities. Not so much anymore. Take Scott Kazmir for example. Here’s a guy with CY potential dripping off his balls playing for a team that gets him barely 10 or 12 wins a season. Now, he’s had some injury problems over 6 seasons but no one in the AL East will doubt what he can do. Problem is, he WON’T do it with Tampa Bay.
Is the era of the 300 game winner gone? Looking at the win count for active pitchers, I would say yes. I dont see Jamie Moyer getting 50 more wins. I certainly don’t see Andy getting 80 more. After that you have to go all the way to Mark Buehrle with 128 wins at 30 years old to find someone who isn’t in his 30′s with a reasonable number of wins. Guys like Millwood and Tim Hudson who are approaching their mid-30s now with just under 150 wins? I can’t see them getting ANOTHER 150 in their declining years. Just don’t see another 300 game winner.

The best chance for another 300 game winner is if Mussina decides sitting around for a full year is enough!
Just for curiosity, I computed Nelson Cruz’s MLB stats before this season last night while watching the Dodgers/Phillies game. In 176 games he batted .251 with OBP of .341 and SLG of .431. So something just clicked this year for the Dominican who will be 29 on July 1st.
BTW, since my 50th HS reunion is this year, it’s been a half century since I did any geometry. Is there a math wizard here who can help me figure out how to compute OPS? And I can’t get the same results as are published for OBP (hits+walks/AB?) Then they added a new stat GO/AO, I have no clue what this is?
yeaa okk Comment myy Pageee…

For anyone in Jersey with easy access to I-195, the Trenton ballpark is at the far western end and so easy to find. Go see Montero in person!!!
ROBERT, This is from Google: Maybe this will help. Frank
To on base percentage, take the total number of hits a player has, and add the total number of walks and hit by pitch to that number. Next, that total by the total number of at bats, walks, hit-by-pitch, and sacrifice flies). On base percentage is displayed as a decimal, with three spaces after the decimal point.
For example, say a hitter got 157 hits in 500 at bats. The hitter added 75 walks, was hit by a pitch five times, and had 4 sacrifices. You’d calculate the equation like this:
157 hits + 75 BB + 5 HBP / 500 AB + 75 BB + 5 HBP + 4 SF = .406 OBP
To understand what this means, you can always think about OBP as a percentage or a ratio. In other words, a hitter with a .406 on base percentage reached base in 40.6% of his trips to the plate, or a little over 4/10ths of the time.
Frank,
Thanks! Without knowledge of the HBP or SF I’m incapable. So I guess I’ll just continue to use hits + BB/ABs like I used to 25 years ago for my softball team! I’ll call it KOBP (Kramer’s On Base Percentage.) What the heck!!!
