Happy Memorial Day from Texas
Greetings from the steamy Ballpark in Arlington, where the Yankees are pouring it on here in the top of the third inning against left-hander Matt Harrison and have taken a 6-0 lead on Memorial Day.
The Yankees are, along with the other 29 big league teams, wearing red caps this afternoon with a stars-and-stripes logo. It is the first time the Yankees have worn any cap color other than their traditional one, and the guys seemed to look at them somewhat quizzically when they arrived at the stadium today.
They clearly do not match with the Yankee uniforms — Alex Rodriguez laughed as he tried his on in a mirror, and both Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner gave the caps questioning glances. By the way, the Yankees are 19-17 on Memorial Day since 1971, when the holiday became official. They did not play on Memorial Day in 1973, 2004 or 2005, and have never faced the Rangers on this holiday.
Brian Bruney was placed on the disabled list before the game, and the Yankees will have a roster move to procure a pitcher from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre overnight. If you’re wondering about Chien-Ming Wang, he’ll be available in relief again tomorrow and there are currently no plans to put him into the rotation.
By the way, this is Phil Hughes’ first start here since May 1, 2007, and you remember that game — Hughes took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before leaving, eight outs shy of history, with a strained left hamstring. Joe Girardi was in the broadcast booth that day and thought he was going to call his first no-hitter from above the field. As Girardi told the coaching staff on the plane, they’d take that same kind of start, just without the injury.

I am very pleased to see Mats out of the lineup today and Jete as DH. Yes, Pena is no bat, so he can’t be any worse than Mats and it gives Jete a needed break. Phil and the Yanks off to a good start. 6-0 lead. Also winning thus far w/o the benefit of a HR. WE can win this way too..This brings out the best in them…
“GO YANKEES!”
Nice to see Hughes have a great game and the bats warm up. Everyone seems to be hitting today. This tem is looking light years better than the 08 Yankees. If Cashman addresses the pen at the trade deadline and maybe aquires a corner outfielder this team could do great things. cashman has had mixed results from trades though
What can be said, 17 hits, 11 runs NO ERRORS 11TH straight game, 8 innings by Hughes 3 hits no runs 6Ks. What could be said as the perfect game. Blue Jays lost, all it requires is for The Twins to come back from 5-3 to make a perfect day and put the Yankees on top maybe.
Aussie B.
Personally as a long term move I would like to see a catcher aquired. When Posada comes back it will be time to talk about DHing for the remainder of the contract, with Matsui leaving and all. I’m not sure I see Cervelli as being a starter at the Major League level and Montero will likely move to another positon. Romine seems the only true catching prospect but making a deal for a young proven catcher, if possible, would be great. It won’t be easy to swing though, maybe in the summer.
There goes the shutout. Aceves still has an ERA of sub 2.00 though, this guy is making Girardi look very foolish for not putting him on the Opening Day roster. I liked him better than Coke, and if my memory serves most of the commenters here wanted him or Tomko to start at Major League level.
Start the season I meant. Not start games. Damn, I am so spamming this blog entry.
AJ Burnett 2-2, 5.28 ERA…Phil Hughes 3-2, 5.16 ERA. Given Wang is just sitting there in the bullpen AJ needs to up his game like PH did tonight. If Hughes doesn’t work out in NY maybe they should trade him to Texas for Elvis Andrus or something, he seems to like pitching there.
I would say “job well done Yanks!!!” for beating the Rangers 11-1 tonight. I am very sure this trend will last until the end of this season. So what can i say, see you all in the Fall Classic! Happy Memorial Day to all!
If Texas pitching has improved it wasn’t showing today…11-1; Hughes w/8 IN, 0 R, 3 H, 6 K; A-Rod 5-5 w/2 doubles and 3 singles. Great way to start the road trip beating the 1st place Rangers.
Oh, and they did it all w/o a single HR. THAT was impressive. This team is heating up, folks. One game out of first, half a game ahead of the Jays. If they can win this series in Texas and the Twins can handle the Sux, 1st place is within reach.
The Sux are hearing footsteps…heh, heh.
