4/28 – Yankees at Tigers

Assorted pre-game notes: A lot of the Yankees were transfixed watching the MLB Network’s broadcast of a classic Pirates-Cubs game from 1991, won by the Pirates 13-12 in 11 innings at old Three Rivers Stadium. A.J. Burnett had his feet up in his locker and Andy Pettitte stood by for the whole 11th inning as Don Slaught chased Bobby Bonilla and Barry Bonds home on the game-winner.

Ken Singleton wandered by and immediately started doing his Harry Caray impression: “How can a guy from Mexico lose the ball in the sun?” By the way, you don’t know funny until you’ve heard Phil Coke recite Terrance and Philip from South Park, verbatim.

Oh, baseball news? Yeah, there’s some. Jorge Posada has a tweaked left hamstring which is why Jose Molina is behind the plate tonight. It also explains why Posada was slower than usual getting down to first base on that ninth-inning double play ball last night. While Posada was talking to us, Molina snuck in and used the handle of his bat as a microphone, making Posada laugh.

Nick Swisher’s slump hasn’t affected his sense of humor. The fans in right field must be riding him tonight because he just caught a fly ball to end the second inning, faked like he was going to throw it into the seats and then ran off the field.

Joe Girardi on the pressure of a four-game losing streak: “The organization has been great. For me, you know I don’t like to lose. Whether it’s four in a row in Boston and Detroit or somewhere else, I don’t like it and the ballplayers don’t like it. We have a chance to turn that around tonight.”

Congrats to Hughes for a well pitcher game. Exactly what this club needed. If Joba pitches well tomorrow night then if I am Wang I would be a little worried.

mm440. I have a question for you. Does anything you ever say feel like it makes any sense to you? You talk like you know something, but all i hear is a bunch of ignorance coming from your mouth. Sad excuse for a yankee fan. News flash the only one listening to you is your self.

Jose Molina became the first player to get a sacrifice and grand slam in the same inning since Oakland’s Sal Vando vs. California on 5/7/75 in the 7th inning of a 9-1 win. Credit: Elias.

Oh, and mm40: Mantle was a hard-livin’, whiskey-drinkin’, chick-shaggin’ rock star. But you knew that.

Ah, yes: victory. I’ll take ‘em however we get ‘em. The offense showed up; Hughes threw a worthy game, he looked like man and not like a kid out there. Robbie’s got a 15 game hitting streak and having great ABs. All the other woes may turn out to be temporary but the stranded runners are a MAJOR source of concern; of late, it’s been happening every season. Winning this series and then meeting the weakend Halos in the Bronx may just be what the Dr ordered.

Hey guys: Been out tonight so missed the game before the 8th inning. Good to come home and see the Yankees up by 10-0. All the runs in the 7th inning. Hurray for the catchers. it wasn’t the big name, high priced guys who got the runs but the back ups came through! Hopefully a sign of something better to come but don’t want to get too excited over one game. Sounds like a lot of frustration up to the 7th inning with no runs and no offence. Anyway, I’m still here on the blog. We can all go to bed and sleep a little better tonight. But tomorrow is another day!!

I think the CW is that Melacon could very well find himself in the 9th hole in the next couple years as Mo starts his exit.

There were a couple who’ve really gone over the edge of late Bryan. It was just plain awful.

How’s the game going from the park??

I got a notice that there were some bannings from the site for repeated use of offensive language, etc. Not sure who was on that list but there are certain people no longer with us.

It would be a damn shame if Hughes gives the team a stellar performance for naught. Granted, this is clearly a pitching duel–how did the Rays let go of Jackson?–but c’mon, those pinstripe bats need to come alive.
