4/22 – Yankees vs. A’s

It’s another gray April day here at the Stadium, where the A’s and Yankees are playing a matinee to wrap up this homestand, and CC Sabathia will be looking for his first victory while wearing pinstripes after taking a no-decision in the Opening Day game here on April 16.

Not a whole lot of news to report pre-game, though it does seem that Nick Swisher will have a busy morning tomorrow, ringing the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange at 9:30 a.m.

Just for the heck of it, after reading glowing reviews online of the $15.00 steak sandwich available from Lobel’s, I headed down to the left field concourse and tried one out for lunch. I hope they were having an off day, because mine was dripping and soggy. Though the AT&T people at an adjacent booth did give me a free notepad, so the trip wasn’t a complete bust.

Yet another video replay here in the second inning as the umpires have upheld a three-run homer for Kurt Suzuki. Joe Girardi wanted that one looked at after a fan appeared to snag the ball over Johnny Damon’s head in left field. You’ll remember the Yankees got the benefit of a Jorge Posada homer in the Indians series, so now they’ve had one taken away as well.

Here are the lineups —

OAKLAND ATHLETICS
Ryan Sweeney CF
Orlando Cabrera SS
Jason Giambi DH
Matt Holliday LF
Jack Cust RF
Kurt Suzuki C
Mark Ellis 2B
Landon Powell 1B
Bobby Crosby 3B

Brett Anderson LHP

NEW YORK YANKEES
Derek Jeter SS
Johnny Damon LF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Jorge Posada C
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Hideki Matsui DH
Melky Cabrera CF
Cody Ransom 3B

CC Sabathia LHP

Is there a pitcher in organization that can get batters out?
The handling of pitchers by Girardi and Eiland is a joke. Left in too long or pulled when getting people out. Cashman needs to evaluate his coachs before the season slips away!

The starting rotation looks like A ball, relievers are ineffective or pulled too soon. The Jays and the Sox will be waving bye-bye if nothing is done soon!

bpunk,

There you go again trying to start trouble again. If anything, of all the wannabe GM’s (experts) on this board you are the one who is most troubling as many would agree with all your idiotic posts going back to last season. With every post you write your baseball credibility, such as it is, takes a hit, something it can’t afford. Do you even watch baseball at all? I doubt it!! First you say you want Giambi or Sheff to have been the DH on this team instead of Matsui. Granted, Matsui has serious issues, but so do Sheff (.154) and Giambi (.204). As it turns out Matsui continues to have a better season than those two losers combined. Also, Sheff would have clogged up the roster as a part time player if the Yanks got him solely to give players a rest. That’s why the got Swish who would have done that had NAdy not gone down, but he did and now Swish is starting. This team couldn’t have predicted Nady would go down, but that’s why hindsight is 20/20. These are facts that people have have tried to pound in that dense piece of fat you call a head, but the point continues to go over your head. You also continue to bore us to death your crap about how much Fuentes is than Marte, but another fact you ignore is that Fuentes is struggling with a 7.20 ERA. You’re such a basball genius bpunk. Your baseball knowledge is about as laughable as an image of you running through a park naked. I’m no fan of Cashman, but ever night I thank God you are not the GM of this team otherwise you would lead it down the crapper. Just that your trap before you humiliate yourself some more. Like others I doubt you’re even a true Yankee fan. If you were you wouldn’t even think about having garbage like Clemens, Fuentes, Sheff or Giambi on this team

Bet you guys thought I picked my name on a whim, didn’t you? Now I know how that loser scumbag Clemens feels when he has his periods.

I stand corrected. Who’d have thought we’d get 4 scoreless innings from the pen? That game should have been over in regulation.

I for one am confused, before 08 I had absolute confidence in Cabrera, I even brashly predicted he would hit 24 Home runs in the season, He was on course for that early but crashed badly and his performances really deteriorated towards the end. He deserved to be dropped when he was. he started out in S/T battling with gardner and I thought was level if not slightly in front but again lost out to him. It seems to have put a really steely side to his attitude. Did he hit two home runs in this game ? I lost a lot of game coverage b ut correct me if I am wrong. Whatever he has already hit 5 0r 6 home runs and seemingly all have been no doubters, all crushed as opposed to last year. I know a home run is a home run but he really seems to have added real clout to his bat. That does put Giradi in a spot as he must be a long way now in front of Gardner. None the less it still gives the team genuine outfielders with the only down side being Damons arm and Nadys rehab. They must have been dead set close to trading Melky.
All this and the enormous effort put out by Veras and Abaladejo. Yes it was only one game but at anytime it could have gone the other way.

Did everyone see Jeter’s homerun, he hit that shot hard. Not many HRs have gone to straight center, most balls have died there.

Send Coke down.
Cut Hobo Sign Viz
Cut Ransom Sign Lamb
Get Jackson and Hacker off 40 man roster, get another arm and bat.

Bad decision by Girardi to leave CC in another inning. He had already pitched 100 pitches and was getting in trouble. Yanks were up 7-5. That was the turning point in the game. Unfortunately CC gave up that controversial home run but otherwise he some good innings. Girardi let it go too long. He could have brought Coke in an inning earlier. Now the game is stretched to 11 innings and who knows what the outcome will be? All it needs is one good stroke of the bat and the game is lost. Also having the bases loaded with no outs was a killer. Three guys came up and popped up and couldn’t even get a hit or a sacrifice fly. Someone said they looked tired and needed a day off. They had a day off with a rain out and it’s only early in the season. What are they going to be like after 50 games if they’re tired after 14? If they win this one they’ll be lucky.

Like this

These guys look tired, they could use a day off. Only Molina left to pinch hit.

That being said, Girardi also showed alot of faith in CC, likely due his lack of confidence in the bullpen arms Cashman has given him after Bruney and Rivera.

I agree with Aussie B, Girardi would be criticized if he pulled CC without getting him his 1st win. Its CC job to get it down, he is the highest paid pitcher in the majors.

Like this

Giradi cannot I believe be blamed for these two runs. They paid Sabbathia the dollars they did to get the outs when needed and he clearly doid,t. His speed has been down averaging out at 90mph and a heap of his pitches have been up and hittable.

That said Cano on ist with none out. If they get him in they will hang on, no doubt.

Come on bpark, it’s not like your baseball credibility can take too many hits:

Rivera 2008 was 39 for 40 in save opportunities and had the second lowest ERA’s of his career. He allowed the fewest hits, fewest runs and by FAR the fewest walks of his career while fanning 77. Not EXACTLY “shaky”.
