3/24 – Yankees vs. Red Sox

Derek Jeter is back in camp and said that he expects to play a whole lot as the Yankees wrap up Grapefruit League action. Jeter only made it into eight games in the World Baseball Classic and said that he needs to play just about every day to get going.

“It’s good to get back and now get into a routine of playing every day,” Jeter said. “We had a lot of off-days in this tournament – we had two or three days in-between games at some times. There’s a reason you play every single day, so I’ve got this last week to 10 days to get into a routine.”

It begins tonight.

— Joe Girardi said in his pregame session that the utility infield job is close between Angel Berroa and Ramiro Pena. Though Pena has not played at Triple-A, Girardi does not necessarily think that he couldn’t handle making the team.

“I made the jump from Double-A to the big leagues, so I think guys can do it,” he said.

Here’s Brian Cashman’s take on Pena: “It’s just nice to see how relaxed he is in this environment. He’s been very impressive. He’s absolutely in the mix.”

— Nick Swisher was “the same guy” yesterday after getting the bad news. Girardi likened this team to the dynasty clubs where players like Cecil Fielder, Tino Martinez, Darryl Strawberry and Tim Raines had to give up at-bats for the good of the team. Girardi told Swisher that even he had to give up playing time to a young Jorge Posada.

A-Jax!! Take a bow son. Shame it was only preseason but a GS against the Sox with 2 out is exactly what we’re looking to see

I think that the Red Sox will have a lot of their A-Team in the line-up as well.

Looks like Joe’s running out the “A-Team” against the Red Sox tonight! Probably means that Francona will counter with the scrubinis . . .
