3/23 – Yankees at Phillies

Hello from overcast rainy Clearwater, Fla., where the Yankees make their first of two trips this year to my favorite Spring Training facility. There’s cheesesteaks on the grill and a Frenchy’s in left field. What more can you ask?

Here are the lineups, and if you missed it, be sure to check this blog post for today’s pre-game manager session talking points…

Totally agree w/you on the WBC, m_saiki. But you gotta also take into account the teams’ opposition to the whole thing and, in certain cases, their barring players from participating. In any event, cheers to the likes of Dunn, Jeter, Roberts, Rollins, Wright, Youkilis, etc etc etc that gave it their all and played with a lotta heart for their country.

Matt,
You forget that Robertson’s “getting shelled” was attributed to Pudge calling for too many fastballs!!!

King,
Something could open up in these last two weeks that may make sense but the price is likely too high right now!

Yeah well, you got to take Spring Training results with a pinch of salt. Doesn’t matter if Bruney had a bad day, he’s our set up man unless someone steps up ahead of him. Just it didn’t matter how many scoreless innings Igawa pitched, he has no business pitching in the regular season.

Looks like Bruney allowed both inherited runners to score and allowed two more scores on his own record. Now Giese is getting shelled!!

Coke in my opinion also did a great job so it has merit keeping both.

Wang in to sixth and sounds impressive sounds being the operative word with no picture only radio coverage here in Melbourne. Sorry Matt but i disagree I believe Robertson was very impressive in my humble opinion. he dould all that was asked of him Should not have posted this comment as Wang has started sixth and given up two hits at first two batters. Bruney in next.

No grass left at Yankee Stadium, WCBS photos show.

Chien-Ming Wang, not permitted to swing the bat, just “worked” a 6-pitch at-bat against J.A. Happ.

Bryan, I thought it only rained for like 10 minutes in Florida??

REPEATED FROM PRIOR THREADS
BP & Mate,
I think we’re forced to carry another UI like Berroa (I’d be happier with Pena but wouldn’t want to lose him to waivers) until A-Rod returns so I would have Coke and Robertson split the long relief. This would mean Giese would be DFAed but we would still have Tomko or Aceves to promote when A-Rod is ready if Giese is claimed!

This is why I don’t complain about all of those big salaries. It takes a lot of talent to play MLB. Life is short, and a baseball career is even shorter!

Pilittere is one of my favorite dark horses. I’ll be curious to see where he lands for this season.

I think Tomko’s definitely made a case. Kei Igawa was sent to minor league camp today. Aceves & Giese are still in that mix too – Giese pitches today too.

It’s pouring here in Clearwater and the tarp is on the field.

If Tomko pitches well, I guess he’ll get the long man job?
