Greetings from Tampa

Thumbnail image for Tampa.jpgI don’t know if you’ve been keeping up with the yankees.com homepage, but it has been all A-Rod, all the time ever since he admitted using performance-enhancing drugs during his three seasons with the Texas Rangers. Even President Obama weighed in.

Down here in Tampa, my rental car is gassed up, the hotel is … well, OK … and I’m ready to get to work talking about A-Rod. Just kidding, kind of.

Actually, I’m hoping to see some real baseball action when I head over to the Yankees’ Minor League complex on Himes Avenue this morning — and I’ll settle for batting practice or a bunch of grown men playing catch. The first bat cracks of the spring always sound sweetest.

That’s making no promises that the words “A-Rod” and “steroids” won’t appear on our site later today. They almost certainly will. I stopped by George M. Steinbrenner Field after getting into town on Tuesday and all was relatively quiet, but that won’t last long. We’re all saddling up for another three-ring circus of Yankees Spring Training.

Hey, what did you expect?

Someone needs to get Clemens to show up to watch as a fan.

Good post. Yes, it will be a circus in spring training. I guess it makes things interesting. Hopefully, it will settle down in the upcoming weeks.

A shot with another Organization.

Not like Aceves will get a call after Hughes. It will all depend on who does better. Aceves isn’t going to be called automatically if either one is needed. Still a good chance that Kennedy will get another shot if he does well in the minors.

Matthew, we won’t see Igawa again unless its in the news. I said Aceves will be next after Hughes in the big leagues.

Matt, that may a AAA rotation but we will probably see Aceves again before Igawa or Kennadia.

Hankee doesn’t definitively say Roidrod won’t be traded.

Sorry, not to keep posting but check out Gardner’s assists from CF, 5 assists in 32 games. Given that total and his RBI accumulative in a short period of time, seems Gardner is quite the clutch performer and a potential energetic spark-plug for this team.

Abreu isn’t as bad as a defensive player as he is made out to be, the bad rep that he has gotten from playing in NY under the scrutinizing media that comes with the stripes.

Compared to the other outfielders in the AL, he is definitely above average.

Oh, and do Krontos and/or Jones have a legitmate shot at cracking the AAA rotation this season? Is there any sort of pecking order that has been laid out for all of these young arms?

P.S. Forgot about Aceves, he will obviously have a AAA spot barring a spot on the 25 man roster.

Abreu, Griffey, Manny are not the best defensive options

Just heard an interview with Johnny Damon on the fan, I love Damon. He was pretty funny, but a shocking story that he told WFAN was that he was offered steroids when he was 13 years old. I hope too see Damon play a few more seasons in NY after this one, I think he has a few .300 seasons left in the tank.

Also, Abreu signs with the Angels for 5 million. Such a bargain, I feel bad for Bobby, he deserves a lot more than he got, especially when Bradley got a 3 year 30 million and Ibanez got a similarly large contract.

Also, what is the general consensus with Eric Duncan? Is he still viewed as a legitimate contender in the upcoming years with the Yanks, or would be most likely be trade bait after a solid AAA season? If so, where would he fit into the Yankee’s line-up?

Who will make up the SWB rotation for opening day? Hughes will be their #1 unless Joba is converted into the 8th inning guy — hopefully not. Following Hughes would presumably be Kennedy and Igawa filling out the 2 and 3 slots, but then who? Sanchez, Horne and Coke could all make a legitimate shot at the rotation, among others. The pitching depth in our AAA system is quite impressive, just curious who will most likely be given the slot.

Bryan, are toddlers free still for games?

Ok. My question is when is someone going to indict Bud Selig and Grant Fehr on aiding and abetting, complicity, fraud, etc….. for all of this? You mean, Canseco knew, knew players from teams all over the league. Knew the names to name. Knew the when and where but Bud and Grant didn’t? B.S.
