Yankees watching, waiting on Teixeira

Here we go again… at least it gives us a break from debating Manny Ramirez’s dreadlocks…

The Yankees continue to closely monitor the Mark Teixeira situation,
particularly as it relates to the Red Sox, though they have not made an
official offer to the free agent first baseman. The New York
Post reported Sunday that an offer for Teixeira “could come quickly,”
as the Yankees’ attention and energy is focused on the situation.

New
York holds some interest in Ramirez and could offer the
three-year deal the slugger covets, but the Yankees’ need is more for a
bonafide first baseman rather than another corner outfielder and DH
type. As currently constituted, the Yankees’ Opening Day first baseman
would be Nick Swisher, acquired from the White Sox in November.

The New York Times had a great point as it relates to the Yankees and Scott Boras. In 2005, all indications were that Johnny Damon would re-sign with the Red Sox — he’d even gone to the lengths of saying that there was no way he could ever play for the Yankees. But talks with Boston broke down and, ta-da, Damon was getting a shave in New York.

Nobody’s saying that will happen again, but these are the hoops that Boras makes teams jump through to get his clients. The Yankees are taking the interesting approach of laying back in the weeds. They know Boras never comes to a quick decision and jumping into the quicksand can only hurt their bargaining position — better to be the threatening sack of money waiting at the end of the gauntlet.

I find it hard to picture Cashman even doing business with Boras after the A-Rod opt-out fiasco. How can you believe anything the guy says? But decision time is coming soon. No idea what to expect on either Tex or Manny at this point.

So – if the Yankees just acquired Swisher to play first base, why would they need Tex? (Not that I want him in Boston!) If the Yanks go after Tex are they telling Swisher “Opps – we didn’t really need you?” Seems a little odd.

BK,
I’m pretty sure the RSox non-tendered Cash. So their catcher for 2009 is anybody’s guess. I still think Varitek signs with them!

Matt and King,
I’ve also heard of the Rays and a third team’s GM’s interest in Abreu but I forget the GM’s name. If we don’t sign Ramirez or Teixeira, I see a possibility of bringing back Abreu’s bat for DH insurance behind Matsui. Time will tell!

All,
There is still a chance the Yanks may want a veteran starting in CF though Cabrera has worked on the part of his game as requested. The competition in ST should be fierce. Swisher and a AAA arm or two could net someone good for CF or 1B. Also 1B could fall to a platoon of Miranda/ Nady replaced by Miranda/ Vazquez in 2010 (Jorge Vazquez was recently signed out of Mexico and will start 2009 in Trenton.) Just thinking outside the box here so that clinking noise may be the rocks in my head!!!

Robert, ESPN report said A’s and Rays are in on Abreu, Cubs and Mets have previously been linked to him.

I know Miranda can hit, how is his defense?

BP,
Miranda has an acceptable glove, nothing great, but not as bad as Giambi. Big plus is he can throw!!!

I was happy with Giambi’s defense last year, I won’t diss him for the overall performance.

Miranda has more range and is left handed (better for holding runners.) Also, I repeat, HE CAN THROW!!!

How about Damon, HaHa.

Chris Britton must be happy, he may make a Major League roster. Padres are raving about him being their 7th inning guy.

There was some concern that Britton and Sabathia would have to fly on seperate planes!!!

Whatsup with “white” knight comment? I assume your referring to Tex but does the knight have to white? Most of the league is Latino.

The Yankees no longer have to worry about Pavano on the same plane as Clemens, Pettitte or Moose.

Does anyone think Swisher would ever play for the Yankees if Tex is signed? My guess is he would packaged right back out unless Nady is dealt.

Keep an eye on Bernie Williams in the classic, his is suppose to be in great shape.

Angels out of Tex sweepstakes, won’t sign Manny either.

Gammons said they won’t pursue Manny because gave 3 years to Juan Rivera.

Tex is coming here, we know Boston’s offer and according to reports, its not the high bid, could the bid we withdrew have been the highest?

Whats crazy is if we make some moves, we could end up with Manny and Tex. Lets say someone wants Damon or Matsui or both, Nady, Swisher?

If the Red Sox were ever really out, they are back as favorites now. Until and unless the Yanks enter the game, the only competition for Boston are Baltimore and Washington. Neither can offer Teix the chance to win for the next 3-5 years at least, that has to play in his mind.

Giants clinch 1st round bye, will have homefield with a win tonight. No word on Jacobs status yet.

Tex won’t go to Baltimore or Washington unless he wants to. 10 years is nuts, so is 8. Arod’s deal is too much in years and money.

We have to replace our 3 hitter and our cleanup hitter, I am not really sure that Swisher replaces anyone but we could move Posada up to the cleanup spot.

So the Yankees’ plan is to let the Red Sox make an offer, then top it.That would leave Boston on the backburner and Teixeira at 1B next year. Sweet.

I predict that Boston will sign Tex. With the Angels signing Riviera, if Boras let the Yanks sign Tex, that would leave Manny out in the cold with no leverage whatsoever…

i don’t know what the Yankees are waiting for…
the time is now…
it makes way more sense to get Tex than Manny…
he is the player they need in the position they need him…
he is alot younger and can maybe maintain his skills for the duration of his contract…
and getting him knocks down their division rival(the Red Sox)…
they know it the Yanks know it and we know it…
i don’t know why they picked up swisher in the 1st place…
plus if the Yankees don’t jump in and steal Tex from the Boston…
they could end up in a bidding war with a desporate Angel organization and have to pay too much to get Manny or even worse be left with no protection for Arod at all if they let Manny go…
the Yankee Fanatic…

Why does everyone seem to think that because the Yanks traded for Swisher that they don’t need a 1st baseman? I think Texeira would be a great get and put a couple nails in the Red Sox coffin. Everyone is saying that the Yanks don’t have a CF. If they could sign Tex., Swisher could be their CF, at least on a semi full time basis. Swisher has actually played more CF than 1B the past two years and adding those two switch hitters to the lineup on top of Jorge and at times, Melky, it would make moves by the opposing manager more difficult. Tex. would certainly improve the infield defense and give ARod some protection in the order. If Swisher’s bat doesn’t come around we have a three headed CF with him, Melky and Gardner, that each present a different dynamic. I know adding Tex. (plus either Pettitte or Sheets) would just about eat up all the free agent dollars coming off the books, but I think it would be just a one year plunge back into free agency to give the farm a year to develop and produce some cheaper replacements for Pettitte, Damon and Matsui in 2010.

i wonder why the Yankees are so money conscious all of a sudden…
if money is an issue and they want to beat the economic down turn plus build a great team for the future then they should have done something really radical…
like traded away the whole team for a boat load of high ceiling potential prospects…
even if they had been force to pay up to half the money owed on each big contract player on their roster…
the talent they could have recieved in return in combination with investing in the top 2 free agent pitchers and Tex would have brought their payroll way down and given them alot of trade flexibility…
the Yankees have not thought outside the box in a long time…
if they are willing to take one step back for a year or two…
they actually might be able to put together a dynasty…
instead of doing enough to win the division go to the Playoffs and be eliminated in the first round…
