Yankees, Pettitte still in salary stalemate
Andy Pettitte still wants to return to the Yankees, and the pitching-hungry Yankees want him back. The only remaining holdup, as Pettitte told The New York Times in Thursday’s editions, is his salary.
“I mean, to tell you the truth, like I’ve told you all a hundred times, I’ve made it loud and clear where I’d like to play at,” Pettitte told the newspaper in a telephone interview. “I’m just basically sitting here letting my agents do their job really.”
Pettitte earned $16 million in each of the last two seasons, and is leaning on representatives Randy and Alan Hendricks to avoid a pay cut. The Yankees offered Pettitte a $10 million contract for 2009 and there are no indications that offer will improve. Pettitte is envisioned as a back-end starter for New York, behind Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain.
“We’d like to have him back,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman told the Times. “It’s come to the arena of trying to achieve common ground on money, which is easier said than done.”
Even as Sabathia ponders a six-year, $140 million offer, the Yankees do not have unlimited funds. They are not likely to push for either Mark Teixeira nor Manny Ramirez, and showed fiscal restraint in declining to offer arbitration to both Pettitte and Bobby Abreu.

Nobody likes to take a pay cut. If Pettitte can get a better deal, he will. As for the above scenario, I’ll take door #3. A-Rod will hit a solo shot.

Found this interesting: Which scenario would you rather have? 1. Man on first and third, two outs… 2. Man on first, one out… 3. A clean slateāno one on, no outs

The figure for a man on second with no outs: 1.150
I’d bet the Yankees for 2008 were at about 0.8 or lower.
Interesting link on that same page about Rowand, Hunter and Swisher…I definately wouldn’t have though of Swish as even in those guys category let alone theoretically better than them before this season. Maybe he’ll be back to his best next year. The more I hear about that trade the more I like it.
As for Pettitte, $12 million seems acceptable for both parties but I think his agents will get him more than that
WHEN ARE WE GOING TO HEAR/READ SOME POSITIVE NEWS. I am sitting here in Australia waiting and wondering. All I have read is possibly this possibly that, maybe this maybe that or I wish this or I wish that. I know no news is good news as they say but please. Must management wait for the Sabatthia decision before going to plan B regarding Burnett and or Peavy. Surely it is time to put the acid on Sabatthia and his management by going right after Burnett or Peavy and putting the appropriate offers for either out there. I know management is astute and it is a gamble the way negotiations take place. Plain and simple if it was me I would put the best offer possible to Burnett as well as upping the offer to Sabatthia slightly stating but go after Burnett and do so hard. I would not like them to miss the boat completely and be forced to pick up the crumbs.
Getting impatient

King,
Shut down? No, more like give up!
Giants jumping in on CC?
http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/2008/12/giants_jumping_in_on_cc.html
Now this makes sense, CC could drive home every night when the Giants play in SF. He was born in Vallejo, but now lives in Fairfield which is 18 miles NW of Vallejo and 46 miles from SF (according to MapQuest.)
Melancon in June, or sooner?

Khalil Greene to Cardinals. Renteria signs 3 yr/ 18.5 MM deal. Braves make 4 yr, 5th yr option, 80 MM offer; Cashman says he will make an offer better than that today… could he gaurantee the fifth year in waryness of losing out on Sab? Giants are reportedly going to make a similar offer to that of the Brewers, hoping he’ll accept the paycut to be able to play near his home.
If we sign Sab, it’ll be Pettitte or Lowe. I doubt we’ll get into a bdding war for Lowe wehn we can sign Pettitte for one year at about the same price. Not to mention his handed-ness.
CANNOT WAIT ‘TIL MONDAY!
Reports say that Cashman flew to Los Angeles today to meet with Scott Boras… what could that mean?
I agree with you park, this move tells me the Yanks are about ready to move on from Sabathia ( or preparing to ) and possibly pursue guys in the Oliver Perez, Ben Sheets, Derek Lowe and Andy Pettitte group. It could be Burnett and Perez in my opinion. Why else would Cashman have flown over to see Boras? I imagine we know what the prices on Manny and Teix are at this point.
I’m out.
My guess is Pettitte will get what he wants in the end, money and/or years.
The Yankees offer to Burnett may signal a surrender flag with Sabathia, who is telling the Giants how much he will take to sign with them.
Dodgers are still after Cano and we want Kemp in exchange = stalemate. Hudson could be signed even if we don’t trade Cano.
A’s are trying to sign Nick Johnson and are out of the Giambi sweepstakes that include Toronto, Tampa and possibly NY.
Matt Susaki is still an A’s/Giants fan.
No one said the Dodgers were shopping Kemp. Some writers said we asked for him in return for Cano.
Matt Susaiki is wrong again.
I would like to take a moment to thank our Yankees critic who is a long time Oakland A and San Francisco Giants fan, his ignorance makes reading this blog at time humorous and brightens the days of true Yankees fans.
Funny how the Yankees signed each of those guys except Cameron and they tried 3 times to get him so far.
If the Nick Johnson deal goes down watch for Mattress to reserve course.
Sentinel your comments have nothing to do with what the Yankees are doing now.
Sentinel Susaiki, did you get IP banned from the A’s board?
Sentinel and Key are your aliases along with nycstreet, pgarrett and others.
The IPs for each of them all matched your IP.
