Yankees begin Tampa summit

The Yankees are on their way to Tampa, huddling up at George M. Steinbrenner Field to discuss the winter course of action for the franchise. The Associated Press reports that Hank and Hal Steinbrenner are to participate in the sessions, along with team president Randy Levine, chief operating officer Lonn Trost and general manager Brian Cashman.

With the clock having struck midnight for the Dodgers and the Red Sox on life support going into Game 5 of the ALCS, it’s time for the Yankees to plot their moves. We all have a pretty good idea of some of what they’d like to do — throw money around on the free agent pitching market to guys like C.C. Sabathia, namely — but there are also smaller decisions to be made.

There’s also interesting news on the Andy Pettitte front as his agent confirmed to ESPN that Pettitte intends to pitch for the ’09 Yankees. The odds of Pettitte coming back had seemed rather high on the last day of the season; Mike Mussina, not so much so.

Here’s what Hank had to say outside the Yankees’ Spring Training facility:

“It’s to set our offseason priorities, certainly, and what we need to try and do. This year, we definitely are all pretty much on the same page. We know what we have to do, and it’s going to take a lot of work and a lot of effort. Hopefully we can get as much done as we hope.

“This year was a little strange because the American League East was so powerful. We finished third because of the division we’re in. But is it acceptable for us to be with what we ended up with? No, it’s not. So we’re going to do what we can to correct that.”

Is Reggie Jackson absent? I have been wondering about his health. He has looked alittle shaky.

Names for Hank: Brian Fuentes, Eddy Volquez, Ervin Santana, Johan Santana.

the yankees have to get a starting pitcher tht will give the team innings pitch. the bullpen becomes a real trouble spot if they keep coming into ball games in the 5th or 6th innings. IP is important for a starter, which equates to more chance of winning games. If the Yankees have to put a starter on a pitch count limit(85-90) he is not ready for the big leagues. do they count how many warm-up pitchs he throws in their formula. They screwed up big time not getting santana, brian cashman judgement is a major concern. cc good pitcher, but he has been to the play-off and never really perform to his ability. will he get labeled like arod, a non-clutch performer, can he handle that lingo.

Matt, you can’t have it both ways! Geez!
From the last thread you throw out “…potential to be an ace…” for Cain as a positive but “Projections are just that projections.” as bad for Cano. Let’s not forget that Hughes has the “potential to be an ace”.

Welcome back Andy! Glad to have you. Now call Moose and get him to come back too!

I am sick of all the Santana talk. The reason Cashman did not get him last off-season was because he did not wanna trade the farm and sign the free agent contract because he wanted to do that this winter. Well its now time foe him to do that and get Sabathia, and hopefully he will. Also you are crazy to think Cain is better then Lincecum. Lincecum will be in the running for CY Young this year while Cain was not even close to .500. And the Yankees are not gettng Volquez. I thought the Yankees should have gotten Ervin Santana a few years ago when there was talk about Giambi going to the Angles but he is not going to be a Yankee any time soon either.
Sabathia and Teixeira are the only real additions this team needs. Bringing back Pettitte and let Chamberlain, Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, and Aceves fill out the rest of the rotation. The bullpen is fine, there are also young arms on the way to help. A healthy Posada and Matsui will do alot for the offense.

Who is this Obama guy who is delaying the WS? He is going to look stupid if there is no games 6.

There is an article someone that says Mussina told his brother he will pitch.

I read were the yankees may bring larry bowa back as third base coach. that is good move. maybe willie at first, paul o’neil bench coach, that would be cool.

Post says Bowa is leading candidate.

Early info could be wrong:
Abreu offer being prepared 1 or 2 years.
Pudge to be offered arbitration, if he accepts, he could get cut in spring training still.
Yankees could bring back Pett, Moose and sign to free agents and go with a 6 man staff.

Duncan,
Welcome back, I thought you were done as a Yankee fan!

News: Nats and Randolph talking about joining staff.
Boone was invited to Yankees stadium for final game.
Boone and Johnson are options for 2B and 1B that we are looking at.

Also I think Tino might be the 3B or 1B coach in NY. He was at the meeting.

It appears we have serious interest in Manny, could be to drive the price up for other teams.

Everything I am hearing says we are preparing to put Cano on the block and sign Hudson. It looks more and more likely than that if Bowa isn’t hired, Cano might be gone to the highest bidder.

I wouldn’t mind Many in the middle of the lineup at DH. Damon in LF, Matsui rotates with Manny and Damon in LF and DH respectively ( unless Damon gets traded, or Matsui ). I think the Yankees organization is going to surprise us with the number of trades they will make. I don’t know how, but I think the org. is going to make us significantly younger. Damon and Matsui may be on the move, we could see Miranda at 1B if we sign CC and Burnett, Teix may end up elsewhere, I think we trade for a young pitcher if we don’t sign two FA starters. Just speculation on my part, but my gut is usually right about these things. Steinbrenner’s comments lead me to think that the players on the field next year may be very different. Nad is an interesting trade chip we could use for a a Kemp or a stud pitcher ( packaged with a Kennedy or Hughes ). We’ll see. I’m excited. The team is too old and I think the organization knows it.

I doubt Nady is used to get Kemp, the Dodgers would laugh. My point was we could spice up a trade package with him and give Melky the RF job, put Gardner in CF. That young pitcher we get back should be like a Cain or Carmona. BPark, if Cano is gone, what will we be lookin for in a trade? A young proven OF? A SP? Are any of vets on the move? How does the org. feel about Melky and Gardner, what are their chances of being in the OF in 09?

I think there is a good possibility they will atleast consider trading Nady, particularly if Abreu is re-signed and they apparently are making him an offer. No one seems to want Cabrera most teams are more enamoured with Gardener. Chances of trading Damon are higher than Matsui though both are in the last year of their deals? Pittsburgh passed on Kennadia, I think he will get moved this offseason.
I would think that we would want to get a starting pitcher if we dealt Cano or a big time setup guy. I am not saying we will trade Cano but where there is smoke there is fire. If the entire league wants Cano, we would likely get a lot in return. No OFs, they are too easy to get in free agency or with minor trades, unless its a prospect.
I don’t know how the organization feels about anyone, Bryan would be better suited to answer that. It would appear that the likes of Cabrera, Kennadia and Duncan are not guys that Girardi wants or trusts.

Might not be too many changes

Damon
Jeter
Abreu
Manny/Posada
Arod
Giambi/Miranda or Posada?
Molina/Pudge(accepts arbitration)/eventually Posada?
Hudson
Gardner

Sabathia
Pettitte
Wang
Peavy
Chamberlain/Hughes/Aceves

Rivera? Shoulder/Chamberlain
Fuentes or Marte
Philly Coke?
Veras
Aceves long reliever/spot starter
Another guy not Ramirez or Robertson

If Posada, Giambi or Manny was available to pinch hit, I would feel confident.
Texiera is not coming here, we won’t have the money. I doubt Manny get his 6 year deal unless there are 3-4 option years. He cleaned out his locked, I think he wants to come here and I think Hank is going to demand we get him.

Oh and get Britton out of here.

Matt, I wouldn’t be surprised if we let Matsui go sign with the Mets or Dodgers for nothing, granted he would be a bench player either place. As for Damon, I think we could get a starting position player (see Jon Crede) but I’d rather keep Damon for his leadership and ability to track down balls in the outfield.

If we do sign Manny, I don’t think we will keep Sui as a pinch hitter but I might be wrong.

I’m reading an article on Espn.com, (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3647795) and it pertains to Jake Peavy. There are sources that indicate that the Padres will make Peavy available, for what is to believed to be for 2 young pitchers and a everyday CF for sometime in the immediate future. The Yankees could package Gardner (who could be a solid OF in the MLB, especially in the NL, as well as a combo of 2 or even 3 young pitchers the Yankees have) and we all know they have far more than 2/3 young pitchers.

How does signing Manny make this team younger? He’s going to be asking for pretty much the same deal as Stat-Rod. The Yanks will be stuck w/ 4 old players all fighting for DH time: Jeter, Posada, Stat-Rod, & Medusa. If the Yanks wanted Manny, they should’ve traded for him when he was in Cleveland. If the Yanks do sign him, do they stick him in RF?

Manny would DH I think. Matsui could get release if he doesn’t waive his no trade clause. Posada apparently will catch, I am skeptical of this. Arod will play 3rd, Jeter short, Giambi first.

I have my doubts about Posada catching too. He might have trouble throwing back to the mound ala Rube from Major League 2.

I don’t think we want to trade Gardner even though other teams like him better than Cabrera.

Apparently we decided Eric Gagne wasn’t the right player, good thing too.

Hey resuksblow… don’t attack me when I said they COULD. Relax chief, I’m no fool and I furthermore, there’s the rumblings everywhere how teams are interested in Gardner. He’s got a lot of tools and will quite possibly be a solid OF for some team. Add that fact to the fact that they have tons of upper level (projected) pitching prospects in the system, and the Yankees could come up with a nice package for Peavy, if it comes down to it.
