Bruney’s back as Yanks meet Angels

Brian Bruney has returned, arriving in the clubhouse just before 6 p.m. ET here in New York. Chris Britton is today’s unlucky customer once more, having been sent back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after soaking up 3 2/3 innings to save the bullpen for the rest of this series.

Bruney’s velocity and control aren’t exactly where the Yankees would ideally want it to be, but he’ll learn on the job in this environment. He said he was getting a little frustrated with being down in the Minors; his return took longer than he wanted it to. If he can be anything close to what he was in April, it would be a huge boon to a bullpen that is still trying to shake out who goes where after Kyle Farnsworth was sent to Detroit.

Pudge Rodriguez is the man behind the plate tonight as expected. Joe Girardi believes that Pudge will still need a little more time to chat with pitchers and go over tape, but the process is working. Jose Molina will catch Mike Mussina tomorrow and a suggestion will be made for Pudge to catch some of the pitchers in the bullpen to familiarize himself.

Xavier Nady has some tightness in his upper right quad and is going to take it easy tonight after feeling it during his first at-bat Thursday. Johnny Damon is in left field and Jason Giambi is DHing, with Wilson Betemit at first base. Also, in case you were wondering, Sidney Ponson is expected to remain on turn to pitch at Texas regardless of tonight’s results … at least, that’s the word so far.

Bryan,

you mentioned Livian. How about we pick up his former teammate for outfield/bench depth?

I think DJ Bryan Bruney is Britton’s twin.

Karstens threw a 5 hitter.

Thanks, bpark, I agree. But, it does not seem like it will happen. In fact, so far it seems that Britton who threw 3 2/3 inng last night is still on team, and Aceves has not even been called up for long relief behind Fat Sid tonight or Rasner Sunday. Makes no sense. (Yes, Giese who last thru 7/30 is availble for long relief, but Britton’s wad is shot into next week, creative roster juggling is needed. And, what of E. Ramireaz suspension and appeal as a factor?)

By tigernyc@mindspring.com on August 1, 2008 5:22 PM
I believe ESPN Insiders who say we will be calling him up for a start soon.
Sign Monroe.

okay peoples, let’s try this again.. yesterday was a bad bad memory

well.. at least it’s still 0-0

I had hoped we could get something going in the first inning. This guy’s stuff is electric.

Sidney’s rockin.. the bats need to show up now

Not a great start tonight …

We get the first two runners on base, and then three straight outs … Oh, those runners left on base … But, Ponson looks sharp [so far] … 1-2-3 in the 1st … 1-2-3 in the 2nd … Go Yankees !!! … Jimmy [27NYY] …

http://baseballtheyankeesandlife.mlblogs.com/

Once again the Yanks will be sitting Nady and starting that no-talent garbage Betapuke!!!!

By matthew_saiki@gmail.com on August 1, 2008 6:48 PM

I completely agree, let’s sit Nady who’s batting , what ? 325, for a piece of crap like Betemit. I’m seriously beginning to question Girardi’s decision making ability.

Juan Pierre, zero hrs hitting 283 with 36 stolen bases, headed for waivers.

Nady is hurt.

Nady’s hurt..? what?

Nady has a quad strain. He should be fine tomorrow.

Bpark…what I’d miss, what have you heard about Nady being hurt?..thanks!

“Xavier Nady has some tightness in his upper right quad and is going to take it easy tonight..”

i must learn to read around first

YES, as I ask the question I read the newest blog, and duh…my answer. Don;t mind me.

wow, Sidney’s rockin.. 40 pitches after 3 innings

the bats HAVE TO put up runs before Sidney’s pitching explodes

who are you and what did you do with the real sidney????

Despite what GM Susuki says, it makes no sense to play Nady with a strain, it could become a tear.

Ervin Santana struggled mightally before this year.

how do you beat the angels?

SCORE FIRST

20-35 when their opponent scores first. thats HUGE.

I have decided to put on waiver claim on Pudge’s former teammate Craig Monroe to upgrade the bench. Christian bye bye.

hey bobby remembered to show up in rt field today!

wow. we gots a shots…um. maybe?

Just to present an opposing point of view, from Ken Davidoff’s trade deadline column —

An official from an American League team, on Yankees minor leaguer Alfredo Aceves: “‘Aceves’ is Mexican for ‘Rasner.’ ”

http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/ny-spdavidoff0731,0,6896365.column

Bryan Hoch Cashman, did you get the waiver claim in on Monroe? Or are you just hoping to get him for the minimum?

hey bobby remembered to show up in rt field today!

wow. we gots a shots…um. maybe?

No running but if the ball comes to him, he’ll make an effort.

here’s comes the explosion

another 3-run homerun?

Ponson is getting tired.

Boston is up tampa tied their game.

Ponson is worn out at 70 pitches.

He’s pitching a 1 hitter but he is done.

9 of last ten pitches are balls.

Alot of luck there, get Veras is the game.

whew

That was quick I missed the whole bottom half of the 5th going to the bathroom.

Offseason targets: Brian Fuentes, Johan Santana, Price Fielder, Juan Pierre.

Hank will try to give Manny $100M over 4 years, Manny will reject it wanting $150M

When is Vlad’s deal up? He signed when Sheff signed here.

Sidney is doing awesomely!!!!! but the bats are still silent

Kyle Farnsworth asked if he’s welcome back next year?

Offseason target: CC Sabathia

I like CC but I have David Wells weight gain concerns.

CC Sabathia
Wang
Joba
Moose
Hughes

I can’t believe this crap. Sidney Pitches 6 shutout innings, and this offense can’t even score 1 pt. This offense is embarrasing when it comes to runners in scoring position.

I think you will see Pettitte’s name there.

Giambi, the stache has to go

I think they have agreement with him on a 1 year deal.

here it comes.. a 5-run inning

WOW!!!!!!! SIDNEY!!!!

i take back any negative things i’ve said about Sidney.. he’s rockin it tonight.. too bad the Yankee bats are weak

bpark, do you really think the Dodger will waive Pierre. He has three years and 28 million on his contract that the Dodgers would have to eat. I don’t think any other teams will pay his salary either when there are cheaper options. Just my thought. By the way, Prince Fielder is under Brewer control for several more years. He is dirt cheap for a team that does not like to spend big money. He will not be traded for several years. Also the Wells weight gain issues that you have with Sabathia would also apply to Prince. I have read this board for several years and really wonder where you come up with this stuff. Farnsworth asking if he is welcome back, where did you get that from?

ok guys, speak up! I was super brutal on his largeness, and I am eating crow right now.

Thanks, Sydney, for giving us a great performance in a HUGE game.

Ok, so all he has to do now is EAT Ervin! (i’m kidding)

Fielder is going to be moved according to all reports.
Prince is not a pitcher.
I think the investment in Andruw Jones speaks for itself. Once a player passes through waivers, he can be traded.

oh my god these umpires suck. another BLOWN call!

He was safe, and if anything, it was a tie at first.

This sucks. Sydney should eat this entire crew.

SUCK SUCK SUCK!

You hear that slurping?

Thats this crew sucking.

Ponson’s our hero tonight, regardless what happens from here on out.

can we get a few base runners, please?

and marte had better NOT throw gofer balls up there.

man….we had runners on all game. what sense does it to work the count if you don’t score runs in the later innings to chase the pitcher??

[more slurping sounds]

no gofer balls!

no meat balls!

no beach balls!

Marte=Stanton part 2!

they better score or else mo is coming in a tie game…

even after Santana leaves, they’d still have to face Shields :(

a score here, and it would be Mo

We have 2 Mo’s, one that saves games and one that gets hit

Mo here?

I hope Mo doesn’t screw up the game w/ a tie game.

didya see Oye Como Va thank god after bobby swung at that pitch?

he was like “thank god he swung at that piece of junk I threw him!!”

He was warming in the pen.

*gulp* just don’t pull a david dejesus/aubry huff…

MO!!!!

what the hell….are you nuts??

3-0 to tex already!!!

he freaking walked him infront of vlad!!!

HOMERUN….watch.

easy people.. a K here and DP could still happen

you gotta be kidding me…1st/3rd no out….what the F-?

I’m going to be sick. do NOT bring Mo in a tie game!!!

this is ridiulous.

Turn the game off. this is retarded in every way possible.

I can’t believe what i just saw.

And once again, Mo has forgotten how to pitch in a non-save situation. game over.

Great, now we have to score off K Rod

The Angels could have hit twenty homers today and yestersay it still wouldn’t have been worse than this? They beat use with are best Mariano. We’ll it ain’t over if they can hit Moe we shoould hit K-Rod.

Mo can’t pitch in a non save situation

come on! the Yankees can hit K-Rod

why??? Thats like…like a….I can’t even think of a witty analogy.

This is crazy. K-Rud is going to save the game and NOW I have to freaking see him, pump his fist and yell and scream and jump around like he’s just found god in a bottle of pepsi.

slurp slurp…

37????

Here comes K-Rod’s seizure. C’mon A-Rod!!

A-Rod vs K-Rod

If Alex jacks one here i will be the official cheer leader for him for as long as i live.

K Rod is going to set a new record for saves this year, but at least he isn’t perfect in save situations.

alex sucks.

giambi sucks

cano sucks.

jeter sucks mariano sucks this whole team sucks. Forget it. the season is over. If mo can’t hold down a tie game in the ninth we are through. if we can’t get a hit w/ RISP then we are done. this season is lost.

Get ready for a sweep.

what was more painful.. today or yesterday?

today

He just shamed Mariano Rivera this is the hardest loss of the season. The Yankees blast the opposition when he’s on the mound, Sidney Ponson doesn’t give up a run. Is the twilight zone?

We’re now 5.5 games behind

so who cares if we don’t have another starting pitcher? we keep making opposing pitchers look like hall of famers. Santana was in trouble all night and we took a crap out there on the field.

I am so delerious from this loss that I am laughing. A giant bull came buy and squatted right on our heads tonight and called it “yankee baseball”

Giambi is a liability now. Sign him for another year? um, can you say DUMB?? I don’t want him and his swinging-from-the-heals approach any more.

yeah. Pudge. who cares. we ain’t going anywhere. He sould have stayed in detroit. It doesn’t matter he’s going to be watching the playoffs because this effen team won’t even smell the playoffs. 5 back now, folks….as michael kay says “SEEEE YA!”. no playoffs for us.

“Playoffs? PLAYOFFS? playoffs? PLAYOFFS???’
-Jim Mora, sr.

the whole season is painful.

Fudge it. where is bonds? Freddy garcia? david wells? I haven’t been to the circus in a while so it would be entertaining to pay for MLB.TV to see the circus come to the stadium.

I don’t care now! We have NOTHING to play for now. And K-fud is NOT as good as his numbers say. outside of his saves, he has very, very pedestrian numbers. thats why the save stat is the MOST OVER RATED stat in sports. You look at rivera, and yeah, he is perfect in saves, but in tie games he is a joke +1. So ignore save stats and look at other numbers…like the fact that we LOST tonight because this team can’t do anything in a big spot.

why do they call him “K” rod. Where is the K in his name?

Shouldn’t it be F-Rod? I like F-Rod better. He’s an F-Rod.

This team doesn’t have what it takes to win. What the KCUF IS WRONG WITH MO in non-save situations? HE LOST THE GAME for us. I dont care what he CAN or CANT do or what has HAS or HASNT done. There is no excuse for tonight. None.

K-Cuf? what the heck is “KCUF”?

I said we could easily be pushing double digits down after this weekend and it looks like that is where we’re headed. You know, it almost seems like we can’t really BEAT anybody. Other teams can LOSE, but what about BEATING a team? We’ve scored more runs but we’ve rarely BEATEN a team. WE need to BEAT the halos and we can’t. They aren’t going to LOSE games.

Try spelling it backwards and you get ****. Get it?

So, it’s not pitching. We had outstanding pitching tonight. It’s not one more bat. We just got TWO good bats in Nady and Pudge. That didn’t help.
We are proving yet again that you dont build a championship team by buying homers, batting averages and eras.

That’s his name and as he struck out A-Rod I can’t really blame him. Mariano didn’t lose the game please how do you let Santana own you like that? The Yankees should be familiar with him now. What’s Wilson doing in the line-up? Redemtion can be found in the O.C. though unlikely.

They let Garland, a 9-8 pitcher with a 4+ era own them last night. Whats the difference?

Wow is all I have to say about tonight’s game… Ponson pitches an absolute GEM (surprising me and countless other Yankees fans I’m sure), 7IP and only 2 hits?!?!?! Then what happens? Boom, another bad performance by Rivera when it wasn’t a save opportunity… That’s 4 losses this season that Rivera has earned when coming into a ballgame in a non-save situation. I know he’s arguably the best closer in the history of the game (post season there is NO question), but I’m sick and tired of seeing him blow games that aren’t save situations this season. I know I should have 100% confidence in him during the late innings of ANY games, but unless it’s a save situation this season, I don’t want him in. This is more than a handful of games he’s done this in, and we really can’t afford this anymore. We start off the 2nd half blazing hot, winning 8 in a row, and now look at us, we’ve gone and lost 5 of our last 6. Does that really sound like a team that is trying to make a push towards the playoffs… in the last season of “The Cathedral”?? No it doesn’t, and we need to right our ship QUICKLY or we won’t be in the playoffs.

Giambi should not be back as a Yankee next season, unless it’s for a ridiculously LARGE pay cut AND with the knowledge that he would be a part-time player at best. We need to get Mark Teixeira during the off-season to be our next 1B, this is a MUST!!! There should be absolutely, positively NO QUESTIONS OR SECOND THOUGHTS about that, he NEEDS to be our next first basemen. We also HAVE to sign a FA pitcher. C.C Sabathia, Ben Sheets, and even Jon Garland, etc. are FA pitchers, and we need to make sure we sign 1 of those 3(Sabathia being the best target for us imo, or hell even try to make a deal with Sabathia and Sheets lol). Yes, Garland is the weakest of the 3 by all means, but he’s a solid performer, would be a great #4 or #5 starter, and we saw what he did to the Yankees last night (overall I’d take Garland over Ponson/Rasner ANY day). If Pettite and Moose both want to come back to NY, I think we HAVE to sign them both (not only considering what they’ve done as Yankees in the past, but for what they’ve done for our rotation this year). I think a starting 5 including Wang, Sabathia, Joba, Pettite and Moose would be a really good rotation. Hughes in there for long relief/spot starter (possibly the same for IPK), and we might have something going for us next year. If Farnsworth wants to re-sign with the Yankees during the off-season, I say we take him. Most likely not at $5-6mil/season, but I’d still take him. Sigh, this team just doesn’t have that killer instinct it used to have, when it was winning championships almost every year. The offense might not have been as potent as ours CAN be now, but it was definitely more CONSISTENT. We have all these veterans that come to the Yankees to win a title, yet they can’t all consistently perform close to their own standards, making a serious title run pretty hard. Someone has to light a fire under the Yankees’ collective backsides and get this team firing on all cylinders, that is if these Yankees want to make the playoffs…

Mia Culpa to Fat Sidney. Was at the game. He was “on” for 7 shutout innings, 96 pitches, 2 hits, 4 walks, pitched out of only jam. Who would have thunk it? (Cashman maybe ?)

rocketman

Don’t bother reading wannabe gm bpark’s posts. He’s delusional. From what Torre has said recently, he’s not about to lose his leadoff hitter any time soon. Looks like Jones and Ethier are out of the OF picture.
