Yankees cooling at deadline

– Hopefully no one started stitching Jarrod Washburn’s Yankees jersey together. Brian Cashman said yesterday that everything seems to have cooled in advance of Thursday’s non-waivers trade deadline, and that includes Washburn. The New York Post reports that the Mariners not only want the Yankees to take on all of the $13.6 million remaining on Washburn’s contract, but also to surrender a quality prospect. Richie Sexson may believe Washburn will be a great fit, but not at that price.

– It looks like Jose Molina and Chad Moeller are the catching tandem for the rest of the year, with Jorge Posada out. Cashman isn’t painting a rosy picture about the possibility of upgrading behind the plate. Now we know why Moeller hung around so long as a third catcher. They were lucky to sneak him through waivers one time, and Cashman wasn’t about to take the risk again.

– Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano (yes, that Carl Pavano) are set to pitch in a rehab game tonight for Class-A Charleston, taking on the Asheville Tourists lineup. The game was moved from Florida due to inclement weather. Random aside: the Tourists were the team that Crash Davis finished up his career with in ‘Bull Durham.’

– Xavier Nady changed his number from 29 to 22 and promptly hit his first home run in pinstripes. This would be a good place to write something wise about Kei Igawa’s impact on the uniform. … Mark Melancon and Chase Wright have been promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, reports Mike Ashmore.

As a complete offshoot, I’m pumped about the Sirius-XM merger. I’ve been a Sirius subscriber for years and had to add XM service for its MLB coverage. Having both services on one radio is going to make my driving more enjoyable (and affordable). $12.95 a month for radio is quickly becoming a luxury, but once upon a time people didn’t think cable television would fly either.

Rasner pitched ok last night, they were in position for the offense to strike before things went haywire there. I don’t expect pitchers to be perfect every pitch, Ras did adequately and above average for most nights… Marte blew in that crucial AB against Huff.

Our offense though, aside from the late wakeup call sucked it for the first 7. Cabrera had been on a 1-5 streak and we couldn’t make him pay?

This is what gets me about this team, we play up, we play down, hell I bet if we played little league SOMEHOW this team would manage to come out on the field 2′ shorter!

Underachievers!

I realize there’s still a small window with a bit of sun shining through that represents hope, but I’m afraid the sun has set on this season. Like I said yesterday, if this team isn’t dealing for a SP, then what’s the difference if they bring in Pavano for a start over Ras or whomever? Now they can wait ’til we’re completely out of it for all I care (which may not be long now), but holding out hope that we can overtake the likes of the Rays and/or Boston with the way we’re so up and down is getting hard to do.

Jeter comes out and does the pitcher favors swinging at first pitches when they already had us down 2-0. That’s just not smart, I don’t care how good it looks coming down the pipe!

And of course, Betemit in the clutch? Are you kidding me?! I had turned the game off and looked at the scoreboard, saw we rallied, turned it back on to see we had 2 out, two on and freaking Betemit at the plate!? I waited about the whole two seconds it took to see pitch 1… and knew then that Girardi was leaving him in?!? Oh hell no.

That was inexcusable… period. Sexson or Nady should’ve been in there pinchin. Hell Girardi himself, ANYONE but Betemit.

It’s time to move Pontoon and Rasner out of the rotation. Kennedy is as ready as he’s going to be if they plan to use him this season. it’s time to get him up to the Bronx. It’s also time to give another farm hand a shot too. Jason Jones is 10-5 with Trenton and SWB with a 2.9 era. Phil Coke looks like he could use a shot. But it’s time to do something. Hell, I’d even give Igawa another shot.

Sper,
We’re already facing 4 very long games. We’ve lost this series and face the very real prospect of being at least 8 back of the Rays by next week. The Rays have Detroit and Cleveland coming up after the Jays. The SUCHS have Oakland and KC. We’re really looking at pushing double digits back by next week. We could be TIED with the SUCHS for second place right now. TIED with the possibiity of going ahead by a game tonight. Instead, we’ve sucked SSA!!!

Like

Makes no difference…. Season’s done now. Unless someone shoots half the halo’s team in the leg, they are going to be unbeatable. You think we couldn’t beat them before? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHA. they are making the SUCHS look as foolish as we do against the O’s.

Pavano and Hughes both had good outings in their rehab appearances. IPK pitched another solid game in AAA (it seems to be a trend though, he pitches exceptionally well at AAA then stains his pants at the MLB level), so our staff does have help coming, to fill some of it’s holes. I am EXTREMELY disappointed that the Yankees allowed Teixeira to go to one of their AL rivals, the Angels, for very little too I might add. We better hope he doesn’t have an immediate impact on that offense, or we could be facing 4 very LONG games ahead of us. Yankees brass, read this very carefully and use it… AFTER THE SEASON WHEN MARK TEIXEIRA BECOMES A FREE AGENT, YOU DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWERS TO SIGN HIM TO A 5-7 YEAR DEAL THAT NOBODY CAN MATCH…. There I said it finally.

Like

But on a more annoyingly serious note, I am so fed up with this team right now, and because my life is so dull and boring at the present time, I have nothing else to do but bitch and complain about this $200m team.

The biggest complaint I have is betemit not being pinch hit for in that spot. I can live with everything else-Huff had a good game and I loved how cabrera got tossed….BUT you have total control over who bats and who doesn’t, and not putting Sexon in was a HUGE mistake for Giarardi. The yankees had a great chance to gain ground on the sox and keep pace with the dumbo rays and now they are 4GAMES out, and the next team they play are the angels-with mark texeira to boot.

i don’t expect much from this week. Or the rest of this summer. Now you all see why i didn’t jump around all nimbly-bimbly when they took 2/3 3 from the dead sox and swept 6 from the A’s/Twins? Apparantly, that trade did nothing for us but prolong the inevitable….Wilson betemit striking out in another big spot. Why are you going to trade for two bigtime players and STILL have him on the team???

I agree Michael. I love Mo and there isn’t a closer in the bigs I’d rather have come in to a save situation to lock down a game than him. HOWEVER, I don’t want to see him in in non-save opportunities anymore. I don’t know if his mindset is different going in or what, but he is a different pitcher when he comes in during a tie game or trailing, than he is when a save is on the line.
It’s also a HUGE disappointment that the Angels traded for Teixeira. I heard one GM say that the Nady trade was total BS and that the Pirates got basically hosed. How about this trade?????? Ok Kotchmann is a good 1B, but NOWHERE near the caliber of Teixeira. Oh and who the hell is the pitcher they threw in the deal, some AA pitcher who isn’t even close to being a top prospect in the Angels’ organization. As a matter of fact, this pitcher wouldn’t even be a top prospect in the Royals’ organization… Are you telling me the Yankees couldn’t offer a package of similar standards to pull Teixeira from Atlanta??!?!?!?!??! We could’ve given them 2 pitching prospects, one basically garbage AA prospect like the Angels gave up (pick from a list of Phil Coke, George Kontos, Steven White, etc.) as well as a AAA prospect (pick from IPK, Chase Wright, Steven Jackson, etc.) and/or even a seperate pitcher on our 40-man roster (Scott Patterson, David Robertson, Rasner, etc.). The majority of those names are FAR better “prospects” than this Marek clown. We most likely couldn’t trade the equivalent to Kotchmann, but we have positional prospects that could’ve been thrown in (Gardner or Christian [I don't see them both playing important roles on our team anytime in the next 4+ years], Eric Duncan, Cody Ransom, Juan Miranda, just to name a few). Unless we sign Teixeira as a FA, our 1B situation is going to be awful for the next 5ish years.

Someone explain to me how we can sweep two teams over 500 in the A’s and Twins, take two out of three to the BoSuxs, then drop 2 games to the 51-55 Orioles. What a joke! We have to get rid of Betemit!! Like mentioned in an above blog..Why’d we sign Sexson, who’s got a 300+ average against lefties and leave him on the bench at such a pivitol moment in the game. This just in…Brian Cashman had to deny rumors from various sources that the reason Wilson Betemit is still on the team and not designated for assignment is due to the fact that Hal Steinbrenner is boinking Wilson Betemits 17 year old sister. Why on godsgreenearth do they have richie sexon? I would MUCH rather have Sexon up then Betemit. Sexon at least has SOME talent where Betemit is a strike out waiting to happen.

He had is “one” moment this year…ONE. Get rid of him. If you want a back-up infielder, bring up Gonzo and get this bum off the team.

AND, mariano gave up the gofer ball to huff, so if we are going top get on the O for not coming through in times before, we need to get on Mo for the STUPID pitch selection against Huff. The O gave us 2 in the 8th and 9 in the 9th. Lets give them some credit.

BAD LOSS tonight. BAD BAD BAD. One of the worst all year.

How can anyone be excited about Pavano possibly making a return to the Yankees?!?!? As a Yankee he has done nothing but pitch batting practice, and pitching batting practice for the opposing team is not a good idea! I think Pavano should be a loowed another chance but not when we are in third place in the division unless it is absolutely neccesary. So what if Pavano has more experience than Raz, Kennedy, and Hughes put together, he hasn’t pitched against big league hitters in years (a couple games a year doesn’t count). Next year get him on a low contract yea definately give hime a chance but not this ate into the season unless we are in the playoffs. And Pavano’s experience in the post season means absolutely nothing!!!! When a guy does not face major league hitters they are not going to be effective. Hughes and Kennedy will both get the call before Pavano!!!!! And the Yankees do NOT need another bat. Where in this lineup do you put another bat? Tell me! The only way to add anotehr bat would require getting rid of Melky and placing Nady in center. Then we are already saying bye bye to Abreu next year. Nady will be our right fielder and no one will want Damon or Matsui. That would mean Gardner or austin Jackson will be our starting cf. however, if Melky is traded the trade will be based around a pitcher. The Yankees bats can only heat up.

Adding Pavano Puts Yanks in hole ???? You gotta be kidding….If the Yanks have to chose between starting Pavano, Hughes, and Kennedy…Pavano is hands down better than Hughes and Kennedy, neither have shown zip this year…whereas Pavano is an experienced major league pitcher who has a) pitched successfully in a pennant race and b) effectively in the playoffs and World Series (part of the staff with Beckett when Marlins scuttled the Yanks with good pitching). Pavano is recovering from tommy John surgery…Our Docs have deemed his surgery to be successful…All Pavano has to do is build his arm strength and regain his controll and he will contribute as a number 4 in the rotation…Tonites performance should determine if Rasner can hold down number 5. Yanks should forget about acquiring mediocre pitchers like JarroD Washburn, Bronson Arroyo, or Paul Byrd…these three will add nothing to our rotation and really put the Yanks in the “hole”…plus r Yanks really need a power Bat…Giambi has struck out 10 of his last 16 at bats…he is about done for the year…Damon is playing with one wing….Abreu, Rodriguez will go into their slumber once again.

Twins, Tigers interested in Hawkins
LaTroy Hawkins | Yankees | Interested: Tigers? Twins?
The Minnesota Twins have shown interest in LaTroy Hawkins, who was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees this past weekend, Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Hawkins is making $3.5 million this season and any team that would pick him up would have to pay the remaining $1.25 million owed to him. The Yankees have 10 days to trade him or send him through waivers, after which he would be a free agent and a team could sign him for about $140,000.

Christensen reports on Tuesday that the Detroit Tigers are interested in Hawkins as well. They have had their own set of bullpen problems in the past few weeks and hope signing Hawkins would alleviate some of the issues.

Well I hear ya Robert, but if they’ve got very similar numbers and the Angels made the deal anyway… why?

Isn’t Tex’s value a bit higher than Kotchman’s or would they be considerably the same?

Does LA now have the inside track to sign Tex or must they wait until the season is over? This part I am not up to speed on…

I realize there are factors that make the trade look so-so, but if we covet Tex for what he can do for this team, he has to be just as valuable on that Angel team and in their lineup… so from that aspect yes I think they got better at the least, and considering how well they’ve fared against us in recent years, that seems to tip the scale a bit further in their favor that’s all…

I was really holding out some hope we could land this guy… guess we’ll have to go another route!

Damon
Jeter
Abreu
A-Rod
Giambi
Cano
Nady
Matsui
Molina

Hey guys … it’s funny you bring the travel thing up. I just finished Mike Shropshire’s book about covering the ’75 Rangers and couldn’t help but think it’d be great to have the luxury of traveling with the team.

The Yankees fly out the night of games (not the morning after), have an easy path through security, great food on the charter flight and never get stuck with the middle seat flying coach between a husband and wife who like the window and aisle, but want to “chat” from New York to San Francisco.

Not that, uh, that ever happened to me or anything.

Since I work for Major League Baseball, not the Yankees, we don’t fly with the team – none of the print reporters do. The only media allowed on the charter flight are the broadcasters from the YES Network, etc. So if you’re taking the earliest flight to Toronto from Newark Airport on, say, Aug. 19, I guarantee I’ll probably be on your flight, so come and say hello.

Add the Dodgers and Yankees to the list of teams that have expressed some level of interest in Mark Teixeira.

According to clubs that have spoken with the Braves, the bulk of their conversations continue to be with the four primary teams identified Monday — the Diamondbacks, Angels, Rays and Red Sox. However, there are indications now that the Dodgers and Yankees have “flirted” with the Braves on Teixeira in the past 24 hours, said an official of one team that spoke with the Atlanta brass.

Clubs involved in these discussions believe the Braves plan to take much of the day Tuesday narrowing their focus with each of the clubs involved and zeroing in on which available names make the most sense. They would then try to close in on a deal with the team, or teams, they think provide the best fit over the next 24 hours.

According to teams in this mix, the Braves aren’t necessarily insisting on getting a first baseman back, but they’ve made it clear that’s their preference. And if they don’t get a first baseman in return, they still are prioritizing a big league-ready bat as the centerpiece of any trade.

The Rangers are one of the only teams with catching depth in Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Gerald Laird, Taylor Teagarden and Max Ramirez, and nearly eight teams have been trying to deal for one. The Yankees are one of several clubs in on Laird, and Boston is in on Teagarden.

You guys keep writing about the 2009 rotation. I can care less about 2009. Win now and the Yanks have a good chance, if they can get a starting pitcher that all he has to do for now is win 3 games in august and 1 or 2 september and they have a good shot. Tampa is coming back to the pack, Boston is in disarray, ozzie can go crazy at anytime. So the real competion to me (my opinion) is the Angels. They have a team that yanks match well againist, if they play fundermental baseball like the angels play. You guys talking 2009, 39 to 41 wins and Yanks are in.

I respect what Molina has done behind the plate and how he has worked with the pitching staff, but damn man get another catcher. I think Peter Gammons on ESPN.com is reporting the Yanks’ interest in Laird, he would be a sick addition. I know Saltalamacchia is unhappy about not being able to catch full time. I’ll be happy with either one. I’m guessing it would cost an Ian Kenndey type of player to pull off that deal, the Rangers need pitching as always.

That lefty starter will be CC Sabathia. For every 10 million dollars that ANY other teams offer him, we can offer 15 million. I see the rotation shaping up like this for 2009:

Sabathia
Wang
Pettite
Chamberlain
Hughes

Seems pretty damn lights out to me….

Britton is on the Yankees’ 40. I’m not sure why he’s not listed on the site, must be a glitch.

I’m with Chaz. We’ve pissed enough dough at this dope over the last almost 4 years. If he’s healthy, he goes to the hill if for nothing else but to be resoundly booed by the Yankee Faithful as he walks off the mound with a 7 run deficit in the second inning. If he gives us ANYTHING, anything at all, it will be a plus. We’ve got Wang, Hughes, Kennedy, Pavano all a possibility to come back this season with only 2 positions to fill. Wang’s not going anywhere. I honestly think that what we see from Hughes and Kennedy will determine what we do in the off season. Joba and Wang are locks for next year. Moose and Pettitte are questions. Both are pitching themselves into contention for being re-upped. That leaves only 1 other spot. I dont want to see us go into a season without a lefty arm in the rotation, been there done that so either Pettitte gets signed or we pick up another, I think the former. Moose is still a question. We’ll see.

Great article about “pitch-counts” [in the Charlotte Observer - by Stan Olsen] that you posted in your comments on July 27th at 12:51 p.m, on Bombers Beat: “The Yankees are, hot, hot, hot” post … The pitch-count, and over use of the bullpen, in recent years, has really changed the game [for the worse, in my view] … Hopefully, some Manager, and, or, Baseball Organization, will start to change this trend soon, and let the starters throw 120-130 pitches in their starts [going 7-8-9 innings on a more consistent basis], and stop over-using the bullpen … Teams should depend mostly on the closers, and not go to these “so-called” “middle-relievers” as much as they do now … Jimmy [27NYY] …
