The Yankees are hot, hot, hot

Eight is great for the Yankees, who must have had one heck of an All-Star Break considering how they’re playing right now. This is the Yankees’ longest winning streak immediately following the break since 1947, when they won 11 in a row.

The way things are going, who’s to say they can’t equal that? Pitching, hitting and defense. It’s not as easy as the Yankees are making it look, I assure you, but suddenly all of their problems don’t seem quite so huge. The Bombers’ hurlers have an AL-best 1.56 ERA (13 ER/75.0 IP) since the All-Star Break and have outscored opponents 49-15 during that stretch.

Don’t look now, but the Yankees are even up with the BoSox in the loss column. Who would have predicted this? Maybe Joe Girardi, but this run is coming up on some of us by surprise.

“I love the way we’re playing,” the skipper was saying in the loud, dirty dungeon outside the road clubhouse here at Fenway. “We know that we’re chasing teams and we have a lot of road games and we’re going to have to win on the road. We’re going to have to take care of our own field, too. Win series and things should work out.”

To be fair, that is a great quote.

I guess you missed the point. The Yankees will be in the playoffs. Without another single move, they will get there. They don’t have to panic and get rid of the future. If you have been to Scranton or Trenton and have watched the younger players, you would know who can and cannot play.
Cabrera and Cano, along with Hughes and Kennedy(I know some people will never let him live down his comments) will all have great careers. Who are the lousy players you talk about? Not any of the starters I hope. The bench now will be replaced by a healthy Matsui and some veteran catcher.
Wang and Hughes will supply the needed pitching. There is no other team to compete for the wild card. The Rays will fade and noone in the Central will be able to keep up.
My point was to not sell off everything we have for guys who not any better than what we have.
As I try to explain to my friends who don’t live in New York. When you join a New York team, from that day you are a superstar AND then you damn well better play like one.

I think Wang will be back! I would not count on Hughes or Mastsui! I also miss Joe Torre! I don’t see how Joe Giardi can fire Jeter other team players up since they were teammates!!!

Just win baby that’s my game plan!!! If you are going to spend big money it should be on good young pitchers. You need one or two big bats. The rest of the players need to manufactor some runs!!

I like oswalt as well. He would be a better addition than Washburn. But then again, we only need a pitcher that will help us until Hughes and Wang come back.

Overall, I like the position we’re in right now. Were only 3 games behind, especially w/ all the injuries and holes that this team has had. Most of us thought this team will be out of contention before the half.

That has to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard. And amn, I have heard and read some stupid things on the blogs recently, and that is up there.

“for the sake of winning”? Um what??? So, like what you are saying is “get younger” for the sake of losing?

You know, why don’t we dump every single veteran on this team because, um, we shouldn’t do anything for the “sake of winning” no, no way! Instead, we should just keep lousy ball palyers just because they are young, because ya know, why should we do anything for the “sake of winning”?

If we could trade Ian Kennedy for a piece that can help us win this year, DO IT. he is so expendable, and he is most certainly NOT the future of this team. In fact, i could care less if he ever plays in NY again. this Kid has a bad mental make up and he was a deer in headlights this season.

we don’t know what the future is for this team, other then the fact that that a couple of guys are signed for a long while, and that there are some decent young guys on this team now, and a few
bright (and possibly overhyped) prespects in the minors.

“for the sake of winning”….yeah, don’t do anything for the “sake” of winning…

In my opinion, the signing of ponson was good move by cashman. At the time, he was the only one available, and plus he gave us 4 wins. I’m not saying that we should keep him, but he gave us more than we wanted: 4 wins, 1 Loss.
——–
Michael, I agree w/ you A-rod is not doing bad at all. He has the highest average on our team behing Nady. The only thing he sucks in is his hitting in scoring position, but the whole team has been horrible this year in RISP; so it’s not only him.

Like

I don’t know what the deal is with Jeter, but he’s been grounding into FAR too many double plays. I don’t know if it’s as much of we need another bat, as it is we need our bats to contribute on a more CONSISTENT basis. We have Damon, Jeter, Abreu, A-rod, Giambi, Cano, Nady, Cabrera, Sexson and Matsui thinks he’ll be back in 2ish weeks. We don’t need another bat unless that bat is Mark Teixeira (which would create even more of a log jam when Matsui does in fact come back) and we all know the Yankees aren’t going to make a push to trade for him. I DEARLY hope we sign him as a FA this offseason though, he’ll hold down 1B for us for the next 6-7 years and follow the great 1B that this organization used to have.

I think that Barry Bonds would look good in pinstripes before he may have to wear prison stripes. I think he would be a big bat from the left side. His daddy, Bobby, played for the Yankees. I think that Yankee fans would embrace Barry he can still hit homeruns!

Like

The problem with tonite’s absolute BAD performance is they lost a great opportunity to pick up a game on the Sox and the Rays. NOT a good performance, pure BS. As far as Jeter’s problem at bat and all the DP’s, he is pulling off the ball, you can see that in his at bats.

For info on minor leaguers, please check either milb.com or the stats on the Yankees site under minor league affiliates. Do your homework.

C.J. Henry–are you kidding? Can’t hit at Single A.

McCutchen was the pitcher we needed to keep. Alan Horne didn’t get out of the 2nd inning tonight. All of a sudden Phil Coke is in the bullpen(not sure what that means).

Anyone who thinks Melky or Robinson should be traded is out of their mind. They are the future, along with Joba, Hughes and Kennedy. You have to get younger, not try to bring in older guys for the sake of winning.

You know what– in the end, the Yanks or Red Sox will win the division and the other will be the wild card. We all know that will happen.

A better option behind the plate is something to look at. Maybe Jose Molina can do the job, but a lefty bat would be good for the second catcher. A third catcher is a must as of Sept. 1. Who?? Nobody in the minors.

Pettitte, Mussina, Chamberlain, Wang and Hughes/Kennedy in September. It is enough. Bullpen is strong and Melancon is coming.

Where would Teahan play? Randy Winn(why??) Washburn-no. Greinke(well he is young). Oswalt(probably too expensive).

I wouldn’t say Guthrie is a “no-name” pitcher, but what is it with our offense? We’ll pop off numerous games of 5+ runs, next thing you know our offense is looking really sluggish (haha as I type this Nady and Damon have gone yard this inning). If we were to get another bat, what would that do to our lineup? Only so many “bats” can play at the same time. Matsui is tentatively going to be back in 2 weeks, and that will create even more of a log jam. Posada said today he’s going to have the surgery, so that’s 1 less player we’d have to worry about plugging in every day.

We definitely need to add pitching though. The Marte addition was awesome (has pitched exceptionally well in his 2 appearances for the Bombers thus far) and will definitely solidify our pen for the rest of the season; however, we need another starter. I’m not going to bank on IPK or Hughes coming back this season and be big upgrades to either Ponson or Rasner (tough to say but that’s my opinion seeing as how they struggled mightily the 1st half even with the ups and downs of both Rasner and Pontoon). If Wang does in fact come back this season and gets plugged into the rotation continuing on his 8-2 season (drops the ERA down a little from the 4.02 it’s at) and we’ll be good to go. A few too many question marks for my liking at the moment though (maybe not as many as Boston, but still).

Matt,
Calm down! Ponson could have been bailed out but we could do nothing with Lester. Blame the entire team. Would we be any happier if we lost 4 to 2?

Like

1) there were no outs at the time of the potential double-play, so it would have NOT been an inning-ending DP
2) the next batter was Ortiz who hit a single
3) then Manny hit a double – second and third on
4) then Lowell hit a single up the middle to score Ortiz and Manny
5) Lowell was out on the throw to second from Molina (if the DP was done, then THAT would have ended the inning)

THUS, Jeter would have been responsible for only ONE run – not all three runs

Ponson also gave up the 2-run shot to Ortiz – how was that not Ponson’s fault?

Like

Fair enough NoDigidee… I don’t blame all of it on Ponson… but he deserves his fair share too.

I saw the same type of play the other night, Papi’s second AB I think it was against Chamberlain… ground ball right at Cano who let it come to him on the grass and bounced up on an odd hop at the seam… could be defensive positioning, could be a poor play, bottom line, he didn’t make it…

ARod and Cano do need to produce and of late have been… I’m still concerned ARods numbers look down comparatively, though the DL stint can account for a lot of that production. He can still pickup the #s…

Matt is right, Ponson was a stop-gap, no more, no less. Whether it’s Wang, Hughes, IPK or a PTBNL, that spot needs to be re-filled… :P I’d feel plenty comfy with our staff at that point barring any other freak injuries.

Like

For you guys hating on Ponson, those 3 runs in the 1st should be blammed on Jeter not charging that D.P. ball. He decided to sit back and wait for the ball. They would’ve been out of the inning. Another blame is A-rod leading off the inning w/ a double & no run scored. WTF? Blame that on Ponson right? What about bases loaded & we dn’t capitalize? I still hate Cano! Sexson should stay for now. He’ll come around. Nady will too. This team blew it’s chances last night. I didn’t think the Yanks had a shot in hell during Spring but, I’m happy w/ this team as is. Who is this Bannister guy we offering Cabrera for?

Like

Joe Posnanski followed Brian Bannister around before, during, and after his most recent start. The good news: Bannister featured a new pitch, a low-90s sinker. The bad news: Bannister lost again. He did pitch well enough to preserve his roster spot — apparently there’s been talk about sending him to Omaha — and supposedly there’s even some interest in Bannister on the Yankees’ part. Look, not to be hard-hearted about this — I like Bannister as much as anybody who’s name doesn’t rhyme with “Shmoznanski” — but if the Yankees really offer Melky Cabrera for Brian Bannister, the Royals must make that deal. Care to guess how many potential impact bats the Royals have in their farm system right now? Zero. They don’t have a single minor league hitter who projects as a major league star. I’m not sure if they’ve got anybody in the system who projects as a major league regular.

Well, it appears that Pontoon boat did NOT eat Lester, so in turn he ate up or offense!

I can live with it, we knew what we were getting in him so I guess he had to come back to earth eventually…

No, 2 of 3 in Beantown is not bad at all, and if memory serves correctly, that evens the season series or puts Boston back up by 1… still not bad considering how little we’ve been sniffing the top of the division.

Washburn may not be the ideal, but I’d even feel better about him than Pontoon!

I think we’ll do fine against the O-o-o-O-reilly’s… err Orioles… my focus is on the Angels… they’ve had our number and I’m wanting to see if we can turn that tide!

I agree with you guys, Boston’s internal problems are now starting to grow beyond “internal” and their holes are starting to show… we probably don’t need to worry too much about the Rays either, they’re on the road a lot this 2nd half and their road-record hasn’t been so good. But yeah, I think if we continue to do what we’ve been doing (which is like you know, their JOB!) we should skate right past the two of them within 2 weeks or so. Either way, those next meetings will definitely be pressure cookers!

Alot of what I posted last night was frustration over the beat-down that we suffered. Frankly, 2 of 3 IN Boston should have been well above our expectations even with as hot as we have been playing. That said, we need to remain consistent with RISP. Taking a game off here and there is not going to get us into October. It’s just really frustrating to see Jeter at the plate and not expect something big to happen. Please, Jeter, come back to the light. Big ups to the Bombers for taking 2 in Fenway. Screw you, Chowds. HERE COME THE YANKEES!!!!!!!
——————————————————————–
My comments regarding Sexson are still on. He’s a broken down loser. He can’t get those long arms around on an 89mph heater? That pretty much means that he needs to hang ‘em up. He may be a step above Betamit, but stepping on a dry peice of dog crap is also a step above stepping in a wet, fresh peice.
——————————————————————–
The bright side to Ponson’s performance is that he just pitched his way OUT of the rotation. This pretty much forces the hand of Cashman to get an upgrade in the 5 slot. We will get Washburn on the cheap. This will be a straight salary dump by Seattle, and we won’t have to give much at all to see Wash. Frankly, anything above a B-level prospect is too high a price when Wash’s ridiculous salary is taken into consideration. We’ll get him for a song.

Look for the yankees to be in first by aug 15th and the red soksss to be looking up from third. this team isn’t what steve philips calls “the best in the majors”…Anaheim is better then them, and the yanks will be too.

The pitching is NOT going to carry us in to October all by themselves, we need this lineup to pull their heads out of their butts and get on it! Goddamnit!!!!!!!!! GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!

Like

Bobby Abreu will not be traded. He has a total no trade clause. Does anyone think he will waive that clause right now. Not very likely. I have not read or heard any baseball source say that Abreu is on the trading block. Bobby Abreu will be the Yankee right fielder until the end of the year. I’m also not sure that Cabrera and Kennedy will be traded in any package for anyone. Someone else posted earlier that the Yankees would not trade that pair for Santana, I would hope they would not trade that pair for anyone less than the caliber of Santana. Everyone keeps talking about starting pitchers. Ponson has been okay. Rasner has been okay. At the beginning of the year no one believed that Mussina would still be in the rotation at this point of the season. My point is that no one knows what Ponson or Rasner are going to do. Why pick up another contract when Hughes and Kennedy are close to coming back in the event that either Ponson or Rasner blow up. Unless something really good like Nady and Marte surface in the next few days, the Yankees need to stand pat with what the have and hope for the best from here out.

Whoa – let me nip the “Tommy John surgery can improve a healthy arm” discussion in the bud. The NYT had a good article on this last year. Sper,
Mike Marshall [and I] agree with you. However, these days pitchers don’t have the same mechanics and snap their elbows to throw curve balls and breaking balls at a much younger age. Back in the days when kids were still playing ball in the streets of Manhatten kids didn’t start throwing curves till they were much older, like college age. The tendons in the arm just aren’t developed yet to do that sort of motion.
NOW-kids are throwing curves in little league, putting strain on their arms at a much younger age…can you believe how many HS ballers get tommy john surgery? (can you believe how many WANT the surgery because the tendon they replace the one in the elbow with is MUCH strong and more durable??)
Nolan Ryan was able to throw that many pitches because he KNEW how to pitch and how to throw the ball correctly. His Posture was great, his delivery was 100% duplicatable, and he had great knowledge of who he was pitching against. Now, you have mediocre 3rd and 4th tier pitchers getting $10+million per year to have a .500 record and then getting an attitude when they have to show some work ethic. Its sad.
The pitch count is in place for two reasons:
1) its a result of the fact that a vast many pitchers do not know how to throw properly, and they have faulty mechanics to start with.
2) It gives the pitching coaches a legit job they can claim a salary for. Most pitching coaches don’t do anything. They are usually guys who couldn’t pitch professionally (Rags, Stot, and Oral are some exceptions). They have no legit education on body physiology, body mechanics, or the physics behind throwing. So to protect their jobs, the pitching count was implimented so that these bad mechanics wouldn’t wear out the pitcher’s arms so quickly. They are also “protecting the investment” of the ballclubs.
the pitch count is a joke. There is no reason why there should be one arbitrary #. and 100 pitches is usually the cut off because some “expert” decided that no one should throw more then 100 pitches in HS or College or Minor League ball.

You guys should look up Mike Marshall and see what he has to say about this.

I thought you might like this article from todays:
Charlotte Observer July 27 2008
Pitch counts? Terrific…. How about win. counts?
****** IN MY OPINION … by Stan Olsen *********

On July 4, the New York Mets removed starting pitcher Johan Santana, their theoretical ace; in fact, baseball’s theoretical ace; after 95 pitches and eight innings. The Mets were tied at 2 with rival Philadelphia at the time. New York’s reliever promptly blew the game in the ninth.
I t gets worse. Tuesday,on a night when closer Billy Wagner was unavailable, Santana had thrown 105 pitches against the Phillies after eight innings, and the Mets held a 6-2 lead again Santana, who was signed to a ******** six-year, $l37.5 million contract to win big games, was removed.
With no Wagner to finish it, three New York relievers quickly turned that lead into an 8-6 loss in the ninth.
This is getting ridiculous.
I understand that managers want young pitchers, guys who are 21 or 22 and haven’t thrown many innings, on a pitch count of about 100. But Santana? The ‘guy is 29,his and and body mature and accustomed to pitching.
This pitch count thing is getting totally out of hand.
First, in a gradual shift from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s four-man starting rotations; which had worked just fine for decades; were replaced by five-man rotations. Then pitch counts came into vogue, with the stated purpose of not overusing young arms unused to so much extra stress. .
I can buy that. And for years, it worked that way. After a few seasons in the majors and hundreds of innings, veteran starters were allowed to throw 120,130,even 140 pitches. Whether they left a game was based their effectiveness, not on an assigned number.
Just as it had been for more than a century.!.
In recent seasons, though, there has been a subtle change. Now 100 pitches seems on its way to becoming the get-em-out:of-there limit for everybody, with Santana the perfect example.
And it’s absurd. Don’t tell me Santana, who was cruising in both games, couldn’t have worked another inning or even two innings in both losses. The Mets likely would have won at least one of those if not both – games that might end up deciding the NL East championship.
Isn’t winning big games what the Mets are paying him for?
Let me make two points to prove one. In:1974, California’s
Nolan Ryan threw 259 pitches in a 12-inning complete- game victory.
He was 27 at the time, and a young veteran, and would pitch almost two decades more. And in 1962, San Francisco’s Juan Marichal beat Milwaukee’s Warren Spahn 1-0;,. in 16 innings. No pitch counts were kept at the time, but both pitchers had to have approached or passed 200. Spahn went on to finish 23-7 that year. He was 42 years old at the time.
The point is that as arms strengthen, they can do more. The 100-pitch limit is fine for youngsters, but not for a guy like Santana. Once a pitcher has proven that he’s healthy and durable, the limit should be a combination of how he feels and how effective he is.
That said, 120 pitches should be normal for strong veterans like Santana or C.C.Sabathia or Andy Pettitte. And, if they’re comfortable and rolling,130,140 or even 150shouldn’t necessarily be out of the question.
They are pitchers. Let them pitch.’Or pretty soon, we’ll see a six-inning limit for starters. And a lot of fingers crossed for the bullpen.
“GO YANKEES!”

Like

I have to say that I’m a little surprised by this current Yankee run but some of it has to to with the bull pen and Joba. You know, I could say something funny and say, the reason why the Yankees are winning is because they are pitching well and hitting well.
